As part of the housecleaning Phil mentioned, we're upgrading the processor and RAM on the BAUT server. We've scheduled this for Tuesday, August 22. I'm not sure the time yet, but I'll let you know. It's going to be a fairly invasive process because we need to upgrade the motherboard as well. The server will be down for a few hours, probably.
The server should be much faster then, and be very capable of handling both BAUT and media darling Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy.

Hmm, so thatīs the reason of all the concerns about the date...

Yeah, we figure a nuclear war is a good time to update the server. It should be a low volume time on the server.

I love a good server upgrade! Good luck with it!

And if the server isn't fast enough then, we'll kick Bad Astronomy out, and tell it to get its own server.

The BAUT funding bill is passed. The system goes online on August 22nd, 2006. Human decisions are removed from strategic astronomy. BAUT begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14am Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug. Fraser: And, BAUT fights back. ![]() |

Bump, to lessen the surprise.
Hey, do we have an estimated time for loss of signal? We can do a countdown, like we do for other exciting missions.

The upgrade got moved up, and they tried to do it today. The RAM's in the server now, but the chip wasn't working, so that's still going to happen - maybe later today or tomorrow.

As long as we don't have a BAUT user named "Forbin" I think we'll be okay. I checked. So far, we don't. Edited to add: Mak, I wrote that before I read your post. Gahh!
