Default Why?

At the top of the page I find a reminder that I have not posted recently and inviting me to do so. Okay, here I go.

Some years back, when I first got online, there was a Webchat Broadcasting System (WBS). It hosted an Atheist chat room. It was great. I usually logged on at abour 16:30 local and spent an hour. The conversation was very interesting. Alas, it died after a year or so. Then I stumbled onto Phil Plait's website. There was a philosophy board. It was great. It made up for the loss of WBS. Now the philosophy board is gone and Phil Plaits site seems to have become highly commercial. No problem there. I like to make money myself.

As I brouse this site I just seem to find nothing to say.

I don't remember there ever being a philosophy board, and I've been here since the start of the millennium.

Ask Phil. I'm sure he remembers.

It was quite awhile ago. It could well have been before the start of this milenium.

He's talking about the Bad Astronomy sister board at Intelligent Child. The BA had a prominent link to their astronomy board (and they to his), they used the same software and shared many of the same posters. The philosophy discussion at Intelligent Child got so great that they created a philosophy board.

PS: Here's a historical webpage, courtesy of the internet archive, which shows the Astronomy Discussion Board at Intelligent Child (circa 1999), with links to the BA's board and the philosophy board.

PSS: I can click on the philosophy (another great name that the BA could have considered for his website) board, and it shows a message from the webmaster announcing the philosophy board 7/05/98.

Well, you're just going to have to branch out a little. A good "philosophy" mind is certainly an asset when you combine it with evidence to back up your argument.

Well Cougar, I have only my memory to rely on. It wasn't a board of proffessional philosophers. It was simply a board of people who enjoyed their own and others ideas. We found more interesting things to discuss than smilies.

It was about ten years ago. I remember because I had just turned 70 and I remarked that I had lived my biblicly alloted span of three score years and ten and was just sticking around to **** off the christers. Phil himself gently admonished me to refrain from such language. Now I have just turned 80 and I'm still here ****ing off christers with letters to the editor of the local yellow rag.

I am unaquainted with the Intelligent Child board.

I remember just a few names. Ratchet, where are you? Then there was a creationist who went by the initials J.W. I think he lived on Quam.

I guess there are no archives of the board unless one of the participants kept some. Phil could clear this thing up if he would.

Ah, just found an archive page of the philosophy board with some posts from The Admiral.

PS: it's a long page (remember how they used to be? ), so it may take a while to load.

Admiral, just some advice, you need to carefully read the rules in the faq, and very soon. You've violated two of them with your last post: language and religious partisanship. Both are 'hanging' offenses here.

You may wish to edit your post to remove the problematic references.

Well, thanks Moose, but I don't think I'll bother to edit my post. You can go ahead and bann me. It will be a new experience for me. I didn't realize that this board had morphed into a Sunday School.

The Admiral, It has not morphed into a 'Sunday School' as you so put it.
Just take a few minutes to read the forum rules & I'm sure you'll find they are quite reasonable. Previous posters have explained that the philosophy board you were on was not part of Phil's original site (Which I became a member of back in early 2000 & still remember).

I hope you can reconcile the fact that this is not a philosophy board per se but is home to many lively & interesting discussions & debates that certainly can encompass philosophical issues, and I hope you will have a good time here, welcome!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a philosophy board be closer to a Sunday school? Or maybe I just had a pretty good Sunday school. Certainly you're more likely to be allowed to discuss religion both at Sunday school and on a philosophy board.

The Admiral, since you have made a public statement, I will reply in kind, though in general a first warning is made privately.

This board is not a Sunday school. However, we maintain a level of conduct here that allows for a higher level of discourse. If it is violated, we take action. You have made two violations in one post, as has been pointed out-- religious topics, and use of bad language. Read the FAQ, and do not violate the rules again, or your account will be suspended.

DejaBAUT. Looking back through time about the old philosophy board, I thought I remembered discussing it here with The Admiral a while back. A little over two years ago.

I had lived my biblicly alloted span of three score years and ten

Not that I want to turn this into a religious debate, but I'd be curious at least if the poster can back up this claim as I know of no such referance in the Bible, nor could I locate one when searching. I know it's not science based, but a claim is a claim.

Psalms 90:10, "The days of our years are threescore years and ten" (KJV), and Shakespeare mentioned it in Macbeth.

Yes that was the closet I found, but the rest of the line (which you didn't quote I notice) makes it quite clear that this is the author's rough approximation of a human's life, not a set in concrete figure, especially when the alleged author lived to at least 120.
