Sometimes members create new memberships for various reasons and post with two identities. We do not permit this. We are especially vigorous in stopping banned posters from creating new accounts. This 'multiple identities' behavior is sock-puppetry.

google is your friend. a search for the term sock puppet gives the wikipedia article as it's first entry.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I replay this scene in my head every time someone uses the term on the forums. It's from the "Fear of Flying" episode.

Sock puppetry reminds me of a vaguely related term that had brief use when I was active with the Make Money Fast Hall of Humiliation (and lurking in NANAE) in the late 90s: the dreaded cartooney.

We once got a legal threat by a scammer calling himself "Perry Mason". *rolls eyes* Heh, no, he didn't get his name off the Hall of Humiliation MMFool list.

Default Internet Sock Puppet = Tube Sock

I saw it suggested recently that since the Internets are made of Tubes, the correct term shoud be "Tube Sock"

For some reason, I find this wonderfully funny.

I think we've just had two examples of the classic puppetry.

eg 1) A user creates multiple names under which they post so that it appears that they have other users agreeing with their side of the argument or at least supporting them.

eg 2) Previous banned users creating new names to continue posting the same old trash.

No not you. One of them had 3 users posting in one thread basically to support and agree with his claims, the other was just one of the ones that come sback every few weeks to be rebanned.

I find it pretty obvious that I don't have socks, expecially since no one ever agrees with me. lol.

I beginning to think that the answer to the question, "what is a sock puppet?" is "someone I'm having a conversation with".

Seriously, I've "went through" at least a half a dozen of 'em in the last month.

It is pretty aggravating how these sock puppets keep coming back. Reminds me of fighting a Hyrda...
