Default Removing posts.

I checked a recent thread I started and found
two posts removed with a note by the poster
that no one had responded. Well I thought I
had a few posts later by saying thanks
everyone. Certainly no slight was intended,
I think we all tend to post our opinions
without nessessarily expecting a direct reply.
I looked up a year old thread some months ago
and noticed a post missing which was
puzzling. I hope not too much revisionism
happens here or many interesting points may
be lost!

Removing posts (except in the case of a duplicate) is forbidden by BAUT rules. Note that editing of posts can only be done to change tone or correct spelling, not to alter the content. Deleting a post would certainly seem to be an alteration of the content.

Mods may sometimes remove posts that violate BAUT rules... spam or very offensive, eg... but not because the opinion expressed is unpopular.

I didn't know that one could remove posts; I thought the most one could do was alter the content of the post.

While editing recent articles you may be offered a Delete-button. It may be unavailable, maybe after a certain time or after your article has been replied to.

Why are we offered the option of deleting a post if that is against the rules??

I'm confused..

To eliminate a double-post. To allow "on second thoughts" to kick in within a reasonable time-frame. To correct if you end up composing a reply to the wrong thread.

There are legit uses for the delete button. It's just that revisionism is considered abusive.

The delete button has all kinds of good uses. I'd much rather just have faith that people are going to do the right thing, than limit functionality because we're paranoid about what people might do. We trust you not to abuse it.

"delete" is a misnomer. It gets transferred to a magical land where only the mods can read it.

That's actually a misnomer, also, if you want to be technical It stays right where it is, and only the mods can read it

*explains he wanted to make exactly the same post as Michael Noonan but had a second thought about posting it, as a mod may want to go and check what his deleted posts were.*

Oh dear. I've just replaced an unintentional duplicate post with something else I wanted to say anyway.

Give me a break, I'm in hour 27 of my 28-hour day lifestyle.

(and no, I'm not following the schedule in xkcd)

I agree entirely with Fraser on this point. Trust people to deliver their best.
