It gets really annoying when you get an e-mail saying that you have a new PM and you can't get on to read it.

It's doing it again...

Average posts lost: 30%

Mean time between submit and post: 50 seconds

Mean time on Alta Vista, CNN, Google, Yahoo, various news pages, Symantec's website, etc. (ie, the REST of the Internet):

2-3 seconds

Why is BAUT 20-25 times slower in responding?

Same thing, and it cost me a half-dozen Q&A from Phoenix briefing. Can the powers that be please care enough to make these occurences less frequent?

Yeah, it seemed to be BAUT only. Other sites, my connections, were fine. Lasted maybe 5 or 10 minutes. I only felt the full effect on one (lost) submission, and don't know how long before or after it was sick. Other subsequent submissions were slow for a while, but not lost.

It makes me want to seek a less popular place, just for the sake of ending this sort of frustration.

I would suggest PMing Fraser if you're experiencing problems. If he gets a bunch of complaints, I would expect him to start looking into it.

I'm a lowly moderator - my only solution to the problem would be to ban the most frequent posters, which would not be popular.

I noticed a huge slow down last night right after I posted the latest "flightdeck" installment. (The comshaw one). We seemed fine up until then. I tried to post another reply in a seperate thread and was "locked out" for about twenty minutes

Just to let you know, with Phil's move over to his new server at Discover, we're not having him slowing down this server any more. There are still things that'll cause slowdowns, but much less.

I'm going to do some benchmarking to try and figure out what might be happening. There are times when Apache just stalls out, and won't open up any more connections.

Default BAUT slow in the morning

For the last few days, I've had a lot of trouble getting on in the morning (CDT). In the afternoon and evening, I have no trouble!

Same here. Same time. Folks I talk to in different time zones have the same trouble at that same time too...

I ignore it. I always figured there was some reason behind it- because it's always at the same time. And us losers have no business being on the internet in the wee hours of the morning anyhow...

I read here that backup is done at 5 AM CT, which appears to mean 4 AM CDT.

I understand the back-up. I'm talking about much later in the morning - 6am-noon. as I said, it's usually up to speed by afternoon.

Just today- I am noticing Very Sluggish responses. Actually, Extraordinarily so- i thought it might be my own bandwidth choked up.

It may be that the backups are running slowly for some reason (all the people trying to use the forum while they are running doesn't help) and taking a long time, or the server may be running other tasks (a possible example would be defragmenting its drives or suchlike).

I also note the slowness.

I thought it was just me, but I see others get it too.

Perhaps it is the server that is performing certain tasks.
Who would know the facts?

Fraser Cain could. I shall go fetch him.

(And, yeah, I experience slow mornings, too. But, once the bran muffin kicks in... No... I mean BAUT is often quite hard to use Pacific Time mornings. I haven't paid attention to when lately, but there was a streak, several weeks ago, where everything would get bogged down quite reliably at 0830 for about an hour.)

I've noticed it, too. And I don't have Neverfly's roommate downloading stuff.

BTW, I like your roommate, 'fly. Sticking up for your friends rates high in my book.

I'm really not sure why it's happening. My only thought is that it's the backup, which is so gigantic. I've got some ideas on how to optimize the server. One of the big problems is that Universe Today got onto Slashdot today, which will give it a slowdown. There are some things I'm going to try to optimize the server for vBulletin. Thanks for letting me know about the slowdowns. Now that Phil's off the server we have one less thing to blame on him.

Yeah.

What's up with that?
Is he slowly leaving us? Getting everything separated?
Are we being divorced?

It's like when your grade school principle used to be around... you know? He knew everyones name- chatted with you about schoolwork... Then, as the years pass, he transfers up to your High School as principle.

And no one ever sees him around anymore.
I used to know that guy...

And here we are... all kissin' booty and stuff... and he's sneakin' off.

I'm going to sit around here and talk badly about him 'til he rears his head in self defense.
