Keep watching. There's still hope for today. Yesterday's numbers probably won't improve.

[I just did a population count when the total was a dozen below the record, and it was aBAUT 106 members and the rest, around 900, almost evenly split (about 450 each) between robots and human-acting guests.]

What about non-humans acting as guests or members?
It seems like I've read some of thier posts.

Would somebody explain to me this infatuation with the number of users on board?

Me, I like having a history of record high usage to help me predict when BAUT Forum will have such a low signal/noise that it won't be worth visiting any more -- at which point, paradoxically, the signal/noise will skyrocket.

Hah. Caught one in the act:

Quote:
Currently Active Users: 1706 (84 members and 1622 guests)
Most users ever online was 1,706, Today [2008-February-20] at 05:51 PM [PST].
And I looked at the Currently Active Users list, and filtered by Search Bots and it counted 436. (And a few other times near maximums, today, it was also roughly in the mid-400s, so I think it's fairly constant.)

Edit: minutes later:

Quote:
Currently Active Users: 1750 (84 members and 1666 guests)
Most users ever online was 1,750, Today at 05:54 PM.
Lots of guests -- could be, like, half of them -- are looking at lunar eclipse articles. (Total Lunar Eclipse - 2008 FEB 20)

Edit:

Quote:
Currently Active Users: 1796 (85 members and 1711 guests)
Most users ever online was 1,796, Today at 05:58 PM.
This is fun.

Only 432 search bots. Lots of human guests, 1722. This shattering of records will probably continue well into the lunar eclipse.

I looked at a somewhat random page of 30 guests, in the current activities list and 19 of them were looking at articles with "eclipse" in the title, most the Feb 2008 article, some the 2007 (March?) lunar eclipse, and a few of them the "eclipse myth" topic. I bet even more came for eclipse info and spotted something else to read so didn't register in my eclipse-count.

Edit: Unless there's another astronomical event occurring very soon, I think the user-flood is over. Final high-water mark:

Can you explain that? I don't understand what mechanism you refer to.

It was mostly an attempt at a twist on the wisdom of catcher/philosopher Yogi Berra (Wikiquote):

Quote:
No one goes there any more, it's too crowded.
The mechanism, if you can call it that, was actually a self-deprecating fantasy, that might have got lost in the noise, in that I was also suggesting that when I found the S/N too low I would leave and then the S/N would go way up -- because I left. Heh. Get it? Oh well... Guru Yogi! Help me out here!
