Default How to post another thread as a link

Hi,

even though I am around for a while now, I found out yesterday that I don't know how to link to another thread in a post.

Thanks for some advice.

Same as linking to a webpage.

Go to the thread you have in mind- copy the link from the address bar.

Click the little Icon that looks like an Earth with an infinity symbol in front of it. Just paste the link inside (It formats it for you) and hit Enter.

Link to other thread is made

Look at my pathetically high post count...

And I'm STILL learning these things.

I found out only recently that I can appear as Offline even when signed in to BAUT...

I thought..."OH! That's how those guys do it!"

Just be aware that the board's "permalink" misfeature is broken by design, so if you're trying to refer to a specific post while showing the others in the thread, then you're basically hosed, since the link will break for people with a different setting of posts-per-page.

In the old days, before the permalink idiocy, such a reference was possible to make, I don't think it is now

Possible, but not easy. I think you could still use the old-style URLs, built by hand, like:

www.bautforum.com/showthread.php?p=1192509#post1192509
www.bautforum.com/showthread.php?p=1192509

I don't know if these have the same effect or not so I'll post both examples and try 'em.

(Recalled by looking at some examples at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/ where vBSEO is not in effect mucking things up.)

Henrik,

This is the first I've heard of a problem. I don't understand what you
say the problem is. Are the links I've made wrong for anyone whose
setting is for a different number of posts per page, when there enough
posts to go into multiple pages?

Exactly what do we need to avoid, and what is okay?

The "permalink" links contain the same post number as other links do.

See topic OMG Permalink. The vBSEO software, that creates URLs that are more human readable (and therefore more attractive to search engines), bogusly assumes every user displays the same number of articles per page -- which is not true as it is a user-settable option. It makes the page number it assumes an article will always be on, part of the URL. Even though the article number is correct, if the page number is wrong, it can't properly display the article that isn't on that page.

The permalink includes a page number, as well as the post number made as a reference to an anchor within that page.
If it was created by someone who has a different setting for posts per page, it's entirely possible the article isn't on the page shown to you, which makes the reference to the article meaningless.

As I said, broken by design.

01101001's example in post www.bautforum.com/showthread.php?p=1192538 works and should be considered the solution to the question pr how to post a reference to a post without removing the context or the rest of the thread, because the rewriting to permalink form doesn't happen until it's shown to you, which means it's your setting for posts per page that's used to calculate the page number, not the poster's.

So, just to be clear, in non-computer geek terms ...

To link to a particular post in another thread, we use 01101001's example and obtain the post # from that post by running the cursor over the '(permalink)' doohicky at the top right and read the number that displays at the end of the address at the bottom of the browser (assuming IE)?

Or rightclick on the permalink and select "Copy Shortcut" (in IE)/"Copy link location" (In Firefox), and use the number from that after pasting the link.

You got the general idea correct.

Yes, and when I'm lazy or pressed for time, that's all I do. The info is there, and the post can be found, but it takes a little work sometimes. Sometimes not, particularly in a short thread, or early in a long thread.

The icon that Neverfly mentioned there is in the toolset above the Reply window, when you Reply to a thread. Click the icon, then paste in the url.
