Default Another site's ridiculous rules

Believe it or not, some are actually quite good. Others however, are toast.

YouTube Terms of Use

Got this message when trying to post:

The text that you have entered is too long (26329 characters). Please shorten it to 15000 characters long.

And possibly a copyright violation. Might I suggest that you selectively quote examples of what you consider quite good and what you consider toast rather than cutting and pasting YouTube's entire and rather extensive Terms of Us, which I daresay hardly anyone here wants to read. Thanks.

Why would we be interested in the Youtube terms of use in the About BAUT section?

Perhaps the sole problem with the YouTube rules is that they're too long?

Just a speculation.

Say, as long as we're talking about... or maybe talking about talking about
YouTube, do those videos skip frames in order to play back at the correct
speed on a slower computer? Do all the frames get downloaded but then
only some of the frames are displayed? Does it depend on the codec or the
size of the frame or the amount of compression or something?

The interesting part to me is right in the first paragraph where it states that by visiting YouTube I signify acceptance of the Terms of Use, even though I've at that time never seen them.

I wonder if that's legal.

When I was on dial-up, I would see a second or so of video every 30 seconds to one minute until the whole clip was done then it would play through in its entirety.

The legalities of agreements that say things like "since you're here, you agreed" are likely meaningless...until a court case comes of it. At best, they can say, "that's why we banned you from the site" if Youtube is the defendant in a frivolous suit. If Youtube tried to be a plaintiff in a suit, they'd have trouble convincing a court that the agreement was binding, beyond what the law grants already (like copyright laws, for example). Ok--I'm no lawyer (I can't even get on a jury after 3 tries since I moved here--must be because I keep saying, "well he looks guilty!"--not really), that's just what my best guess is.

The U.S. courts have taken a dim view of the 'if you want to use it, you have to agree to . . . ' approach, where the supplier has a virtual monopoly.

Has anyone told Microsoft about that? Or pretty much any other software provider?

Hasn't been tested in court, to my knowledge, Treb. Both 'sides' seem to be afraid to take it that far.

When you make a video, just state up front in it that by hosting your video, YouTube agrees to your terms of service.

I still get that, even though with high-speed access!

YouTube's servers are exceedingly slow - I never exceed 500 kbps, even though I can download other stuff online well over 2 Gbps.

2Gbps?

Wow - what kind of hard drive are you using that can support that kind of data rate?

I've had a similar experience to Neverfly - well over 1Mbps over youtube's servers, occasionally even higher.
