Default to all you astrologers out there

i found a site that pretty much explains how any sane or logical person feels about the "science" of astrology.
warning: there is a bit of-uh- explicit wording. but the point is conveyed nicely.

LINK REMOVED BY THE BAD ASTRONOMER. SEE MY POST BELOW.

I would definitely agree that astrology is bull****.. when it was invented the signs were different than they were when you were born, and they were different then than they are now. I've *always* said that astrology has "no basis in reality".

However I wouldn't agree with Mr. Maddox's claims that people can't cast spells. There are lots of things we don't know about both the energies present in the universe, and there is a lack of evidence both for and against claims that the human body can focus this energy.

I would personally keep my mind open to such things because.. let's face it, it'd be kind of neat if we could. I would however like to see evidence one way or the other. Claiming that magic doesn't exist simply because we've never seen it hapen would be kind of like claiming that God doesn't exist, IMO.

I found the language, threatened violence, and attitude towards women and other subgroups, of that website incredibly offensive. It is not a well-reasoned argument against astrology-- it is invective, and invective I wouldn't want my kids reading.

Surely you can find something better to post refuting astrology.

I agree. You have the right to have that website, but I don't feel terribly obligated to have it linked from mine. I have removed the link, as this type of thing is against the rules listed in the FAQ. novaderrik, don't do this again.

Also, squeak, watch your language. This is the only warning you will get.

Wow. What an amazingly offensive and turgid site. I'm somehow not surprised he has a clickthrough so folks can read his hate mail.

And, to you, he's "The Man"??

Hmmm.

To me, he's "The Insecure Spewing Adolescent Who Happens To Have A Website".

P.S. If anyone else wants to go look at it, since the BA (rightly) removed the link, just google "maddox astrology".

Without "astrology", there would never have been "astronomy"

Now there is a curious thought.

It's an undeveloped thought. Once upon a time, astrology was synonymous with astronomy. However, as more and more became Known, and the study became more and more Scientific, astrology and astronomy became two seperate things - astrology subscribing to all the rubbish. So more a schism than a foundation.

The astrology of then, and the astrology of today essentially only share the name.

In more ways than you can imagine. Modern "predictive" astrology is all of about 100 years old. Ancient astrology was a combination mystical/timekeeping practice. What fortunes were told were strictly about matters of state: the priests thought that by what amounted to meditating on the stars, they might sometimes be able to discern the intentions of the gods concerning war, famines, dynasties and other affairs of state.

It would have puzzled them immensely to see thousands of astrologers today trying to apply predictive astrology to individual lives -- the lives of ordinary people are of little concern to the gods. They'd be even more baffled at the pseudopsychological approach taken by modern astrologers. And they'd be baffled by the methodology used today -- in place of the rituals any good priest and oracle would use when seeking to know the intentions of the gods, there is a secular, quasi-academic, approach.

Boy, I wouldn't call much of that funny, even though I have been known to laugh at (and sometimes tell) the occasional racy or off-color joke. But misogyny, hatred of people who are different, bad attitude, and character halitosis are stuff I can get from reading political harangues. And they ain't funny...

Maddox isn't serious at all. He has some definite opinions that come through sometimes, but for the most part the particularly "offensive" stuff is there just for that purpose - to offend. I understand if the BA doesn't want it linked here because of the content, but I hope everyone "gets the joke."

As for the original topic of this thread, I agree that Astrology is complete, utter, nonsensical hogwash... Now, leave us Astrology geeks alone and let us have our fun!

Yes, he's the man. I find him to be extremely funny and he usually hits the nail on the head with his posts. Some people are too self-deluded to realize how full of crap they are and maddox is here to put them in their place. That's what his website is all about. His site is obviously not for the easily offended, and I certainly would not have posted a link here, but I'll continue to read it regardless.

Edit: Sorry, was generalizing a little too much.

It sure is easy to fall into an astrology frame of mind when it dawns on you that your ex-wife and Hitler were born on the same day. #-o

Your ex-wife was born on April 20th 1889 ... or do you mean april 20th some other year?
April 20th is also the birthday of Carmen Electra. (1972)

And welcome to the BABB seaspace1200!

I read that article a few weeks ago, it's pretty funny. Maddox isn't for the easily offended.
