Default Hoagland's tease....

Last night RCH, on C2C of course, said something like he has evidence of the "most important discovery in the history of the space program". Coming from Richard, that's saying a lot!

He seemed to be connecting it to Titan.

Titan has methane....

hmmm

He said he will be back on the air in a few days to tell everyone. I wonder if he will claim there is life on Titan?

Let me guess, Titan use to have a civilization, but unfortunately they enjoyed the Titan version of bean burritos too much and the resulting... uh... byproduct of eating beans poisoned the atmosphere?

I heard the broadcast (I couldn't sleep and had nothing else to do). He also claims the loss of data from Huygens/Cassini was deliberate sabotage intended to conceal data. But, of course, HE has figured out the truth of what they are concealing.

Right...all these international space agencies keep launching probes that take years of planning and millions or even billions of dollars to build, just so they can suppress any data that come in.

Why is this man allowed to run loose?!?!?

Maybe he has found an image of a "No Smoking on this Moon" sign placed by the same LGM's who built the "Face". Whatever it is, I'm sure the Masons had something to do with it. :-?

He concluded Huygens never went to Titan and it's all a hoax because the photos are...

Hoagland is, in my opinion, going to dust off his "discovery" in the early 1980s of an alien spacecraft in the B-ring of Saturn. Of course it is total codswallop, but hey, it is how Hoagland makes his living.

I have been coming to the BaBB off and on for over a year and only heard of Hoagland in passing. I just spent a bit of time at his site and all I have to say is WOW! the guy's really....out there for lack of anything nicer to say.

Can we send a probe to try to detect intelegent life in Hoagland?

Wait.... I have a suitable probe here in my toolbox!

Are you sure he didn't mean Mars?

That is completely understandable. Darn things have been observing us from orbit for years!

On the C2C broadcast immediately after the descent, RCH claimed that Titan had been terraformed. From there it will likely get more humorous (or insulting, depending on how you view it).

Actually I can't imagine how Titan with all its methane rain erosion could gratify RCH. It's simply not a place as good as Mars in preserving metal cased objects, pyramids, gyroscopes, tanks, shuttles, pistons and other artificial junk!

I'm curious. How big is his following anyway? Do most of his listeners on C2C just shake their heads and wonder how he can keep a straight face when he says this stuff?

Does he actualy believe this stuff, or is he just winding people up?

Tough to determine. In my personal opinion (and using your terms ), I think Hoagland has been winding people up for so long that he no longer knows the difference.

There was a woo-woo convention in the DC area last year, and Hoagland was one of the headliners - you had to pay extra to get to see his talk.

Why am I not surprised that he would try to milk his minions for as much as he can get away with. It's very sad that so many people don't see him for what he is.

OT: I suggest we have a Babb convention at some dark sky site. Maybe get JayUtah to give a talk, and maybe a keynote speech from the BA himself (for those willing to pay an additional nominal "celebrity fee" ).

Um..does anyone know what Hoagie is claiming about Hale-Bopp? I noticed he claims NASA has doctored the photos of the comet. Does he think it is a spaceship? Maybe the Bowman "child" from 2001? Or perhaps an interplanetary bug-zapper?

Yes, tough indeed.

But didn't it all start after the Voyager 2 mission to Jupiter, in summer 1979, when he published in the January 1980 Star & Sky magazine an article titled "The Europa Enigma" and never got "a special Nobel Prize" (as he would call it) for the idea of a potentially life-bearing ocean on Europa? Later he accused Steve Squyres of plagiarism of this hypothesis as an e-mail echange RCH posted on his website documents:

http://www.enterprisemission.com/images/squyres.jpg
http://www.enterprisemission.com/images/squyres2.jpg
http://www.enterprisemission.com/images/squyres3.jpg

In his reply to the accusation Squyres gave an interesting insight in the circumstances under which RCH likely "conceived" "his" idea:

Quote:
Finally, [...] if there is any credit deserved for the hypothesis of an ocean or life on Europa, [...] it does not in my opinion belong R. Hoagland, A. C. Clarke, myself, or any other individual. It belongs instead to the Voyager Project, [...]. In the summer of 1979, Voyager 2 returned the first high resolution views of Europa. [...] Within minutes of the first images reaching the ground, there was talk among the members of the Voyager imaging team about wether there might be an ocean under the ice, and this talk led immediatley to speculations of such an ocean's suitability for life. I was there to overhear this talk, and so was Mr. Hoagland.
Obviously RCH snapped up some of this talk at JPL and made an article for a popular magazine out of it. He was somehow faster in publishing the story than the scientists, not surprisingly, since scientists are more scrupulous by nature. I guess that was a crucial moment in RCH's carreer: to realize he was first in publishing such an enormuos story. He began to believe that it was actually his idea and with time that believe superseded his memory of the events at JPL in summer 1979. That's why up until now he never stopped pursuing his claim (and sadly manages to convince some journalists of it again and again). He didn't get a "special Nobel Prize" for "his" hypothesis of possible life on Europa, a theory which he saw becoming scientific mainstream over time. He really believed he was deceived. And so he became the master woo-woo.

Ah...I figured out the Hale-Bopp thing (many of you probably already knew this). It seems some of the "NASA is hiding ETs" crowd were convinced there was a space ship paralleling the comet. I assume Hoagie is reviving this fine notion and (I assume) claiming NASA doctored the photos to hide it because...uh...well, because...um...well, because that's what NASA does, and everybody knows it!

I also heard the "hints" on C2C. From what I heard, RCH is going to "reveal" that:
1) Earth, Mars and Titan were all terraformed by aliens.
2) Mars was originally a moon of a now non-existant planet
3) When that planet was destroyed, the terraforming of Titan was ruined by some of the debris.
4) Mars, being much closer to the "event" was much more heavily damaged.
5) Only the Earth survived to be a currently habitable place.

He has been beating his chest about this one since he read about Tom Van Flandern and his Exploded Planet Hypothesis. I remember reading it some time ago. He makes an interesting case, but only time will tell if he is right.
