I thought this would give a laugh out of some of you, a bit of Bad Astronomy in it. It seems like they are not sure if the Moon is higher than a lightbulb. Reminds me of BS and the twinkies.

Warning: It is quite demented, small children should be removed from the room so they will not think you are going mad when you start cackling.

That's going on my website, too... I love it!

Okay, everybody, Moon Songs! Off the top of my head I can think of three:

Water from the Moon by Celine Dion (not as difficult as she'd apparently thought, after all)
Another Miracle by One Ton
Last Man on the Moon by SR-71

And if Random Celestial Body songs count, there:

Drops of Jupiter by Train.

Who's got some more?

On another level entirely, but "Ode to the Moon" by Dvorak from "Rusalka."

Recently available on the compilation WORKSHOP OF THE TELESCOPES. BOC puts a lot of astronomy, sci fi and UFO references into their songs. Several were even co-written by British fantasist Michael Moorcock, most notably "Veteran of the Psychic Wars".
Metallica did a good job on the cover version, it's one of my favorites on that CD.
Here's another one for the list:
"Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden

Oops, forgot to say: Colt, g99, great videos.
My daughter thought they were both very funny, no problem with the content for children. I like zeppelins too. And cheese.

Extraction process from core memory:
1. Find a suitably powerful firearm.
2. Load and point at cranium.
3. Pull.

Otherwise find an equally "stuck in your head" song and listen to it.

Mentioning this in several places: I updated my webpage with stuff on the large onager and Monager I built. -Colt

No, no, no, not even in a joke.

1. Find suitably catchy 80s disco CD
2. Load into CD player and plug in headphones.
3. Press "Play".

Is it just me, or do other people think the Sponge Monkeys are victims of peridontal disease?

Colt and DStahl,

It's all good... and though I understand your caution, DStahl, Colt did suggest I pull the trigger, which puts the option fully in my hands.

Besides, I tried it, forgetting completely that I am bulletproof. Ricochet'd through my kitchen. Sink won't hold water now. Thank goodness I have an understanding landlord.

I rather like the scientific diffidence of the Sponge Monkeys--they are careful to qualify their statement on puffins, for instance, to indicate that their knowledge does not provide proof that puffins fly quite as high as the Moon. I also admire their exophthalmic exertions. Whew, those eyeballs are something else!

"la la la la la la Sing a happy song..."

Thanks...

Re: Sponge Monkeys BA. I do need to mention, that the western orientation of Tycho, as opposed to what should be a more southern orientation, struck me as very bad astronomy. And the scale of the moon, relative to the surrounding trees, seems a bit off.

Also, there are no visible stars in the image.

That is great. I showed it to the other guys in the lab. The opinion was that the person who created that was "very high, but maybe not as high as the moon."

I think my favorite moon song is "The Moonlight Sonata" (Beethoven, of course). But if you want funny ones, check out "Lunar Love" by The Chromatics. They're a group of scientists and engineers and general geeks who do acappella stuff in the DC area. They've also produced an educational CD about astronomy. You can buy it from their website, and believe me, it's a good buy.

AstroCapella: A Musical Exploration of the Universe

They don't have the lyrics for Lunar Love available online, but I remember some of them off the top of my head:

My love's a quarter million miles around
And she's seven thousand miles around
When I'm walking on her surface gravity's one-sixth of normal
So my feet can hardly touch the ground
We're orbiting together 'round our center of attraction
And our days and nights are coming up moonbeams....

It's a wonderful tongue-in-cheek song about a guy who has literally fallen in love with the Moon. They've also got a great song about the HST, one about the Doppler shift, one about the Sun, a wonderfully silly one about Mars from the perspective of a Martian tourist bureau, and an achingly beautiful song about finding extrasolar planets and maybe someday even finding life on them.
