Default Little Dutch Boy nominations taken here

the nancy boys and the other zetaloon apologists whose fingers plug the ever increasing leaks in the ZT dike deserve recognition.

the recipients of the 2003 Little Dutch Boy Award will recieve hoaxland's angstrom medal and 100 zorkmids. already nominated:

txyall, from ttwatch, for his unceasing efforts to stifle dissent.

seth typhon, also from ttwatch, for his relentless and uninteresting weather reports.

queenvee, why? because we love her.

who else?

Down in some deep dark basement storeroom of the former Infocom is a large crate containing many, many actual Zorkmids. They were used as a promotional giveaway for Zork III. One Zorkmid per copy.

Wirr,
This is hilarious. Ah if only I knew the players more intimately. For me they have just merged into one like a pack of half-chewed starbursts.

what an astonishing image. glad I don't play the trumpet.

on ttwatch, the players can get tedious. I joined for the same reason I'd probably enjoy watching train wrecks. the sad fact is that most of the True Believing zetaloons are boring, small minded and not well educated or experienced and lack common sense. at this late stage in the game, they are grasping at straws while ignoring the obvious. surely this is funny, but it is also pathetic.

the real pathological ones are a combination mother hen/sheepdog, trying to keep the flock in check and deluging the group with meaningless, out of context or misunderstood references to weather and earthquakes. what are they getting out of this? a chance to be a bully for once in their lives, perhaps, the one thing in their lives (an email group) that they feel they can control. meat for a psych student looking for dissertation material.

Wirr, ah alas my bf is one of the aforementioned zetaloons. I rang him 5 mins ago and he is still a staunch believer. Consequently, I am about to go nuts. I can feel myself on the verge of establishing a website. The candy is talking to me...........

Their adherence is not surprising... A sociology book I read in college, "When Prophecy Fails" details the reactions of followers of a 1950's UFO cult, which when the saucers repeatedly failed to show up on the predicted dates, (which kept being changed, sound familiar?), still would not leave their leader. Something in human nature wants to believe. It's a good read and still in print I believe.

A classic, if not the classic text-based (no graphics) computer adventure game. Zorkmids are the currency used in the game.

Yes, the author was Leon Festinger - Amazon has it. But here's a discussion that builds on his theme, looking at a number of other cults:

Another good book on stuff like this was called 'Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds' it was written originally in the 19th century.

Hmmm Zork III! what a trip down the memory lane!, I think you can find it as abandonware nowadays....
