What exactly are we looking at? A grainy animation? I can see nothing that particularly stands out.

This is a technical question, not a "oh, no, the big, bad PX' question. What causes that clear spot, where stars(?) are visible, but that grainy stuff isn't?

Just taking a guess here, this is a black and white image with a lot of contrast so there's even more chance of CCD overload. CCD overload is the cause of most unexplained areas on this type of image.

The link is a running movie of the SOHO C3 difference images; i.e. the two most recent SOHO C3 images are subtracted to show any changes between the two images. This is useful for studying coronal mass ejections, comets, and other changing events. However, after looking at the above movie and the non-differenced SOHO images, it is pretty clear that each of the last three images is screwed up, and taking the differences of screwed-up images results in meaningless images.

The thing at 5-6 o'clock is a normal coronal streamer; this can be seen by looking at the non-screwy, non-differenced images.

(And if PX were to be coming nearly directly toward us from behind the sun, it would show little motion in between images, other than getting larger, and so would be subtracted out during the differencing).

if you want to know about the short comings about CCD pictures goto the meade web site a goto their CCD page. It goes into depth about what causes bad images and random light fluctuations.
