Skywatcher, I'm gonna say this one more time:

STAY AWAY FROM GODLIKE.

HONESTLY. How the hell can the Sun shrink? Just ask yourself that.

You have to quit doing this .. the sun isn't shrinking. If you can go to Godlike you can also use the internet to check REPUTABLE sites regarding the sun's behavior (or other Godlike horse-hockey). As far as the other pic goes, I think it's discussed on another thread somewhere in this forum, I could be wrong .. but that doesn't prove it's anything but a typical Godlike post. If that's the best those whackos can do to prove Planet X or UFO's exist, it's not worth the effort to look up the answer for you. Godlike posts these kinds of things EVERY DAY .. either quit going there or dig yourself an underground shelter.

This:

Those Godlike posters look for "weird" pics, it sells their speil. I hate to snap at Skywatcher but he's turning this forum into a "but they said .." kind of thing. If he can go there, he can go to other sites and quit with his S-O-S.

The earth's distance from the sun varies by about 3 million miles becuase the orbit isn't perfectly circular. Could the distance change be what your seeing?

Yesterday, he/she posted a thread about Jupiter being eaten by a black hole. I just think that either he/she's too lazy to do some independent research or is playing us like a guitar. Why post an explanation when he/she will just post something they read on Godlike the next hour or day? I won't rant anymore but I'm not going to play the game either.

Skywatcher, how long you plan to keep this BS up. It has already grown tiring. The sun looked just normal to me.

Skywatcher, look here for the answer...

The halo orbit of SOHO is your answer.

Skywatcher - it seems the general concensus is that there is nothing significant in what you've "found" and therefore you should remain calm.

Are you sure we should be giving him/her that advice? It doesn't seem to be doing any good. How about:

Quote:
'Oh grief, sunspots/lens flares/CCD noise (delete as applicable) - you're going to die unless you do something RIGHT NOW!!!. Drink as much coffee as you can in the space of 10 minutes and then warn your family that they will die too unless they DO SOMETHING RIGHT NOW!!!! If they do not respond sniff some glue and say it even louder. If they still seem resistant after that, it's amphetamine time - but save yourself the trouble and expense of acquiring illegal drugs and copping a possession bust - waste them now, they'll thank you for it later. Grease the pets too, they're material witnesses. Go to your safe place, then shoot yourself before the Lizards come for you.'
I'm not saying I entirely advocate this methodology, but it could be used, with delicacy, in a therapeutic context.

Skywatcher - if you are for real, stay away from there because your posts ostensibly suggest that you take what they write to heart. I stopped counting at about 14 factual errors on the first page - if that is the quality of their debate/investigation/research then you will find NOTHING of value there (unless perhaps you are a sociology student).

Boy. Just speechless.

Totally. That's why it's in quotes. OK - on your Hokey Scale that's what? - 10 (probably more). 'Stay Calm' would be about 2 (I can think of blander advice, like 'swallow this - it'll help you sleep'). So what appropriate level should work with skywatcher? 'Stay calm' doesn't - we've seen that...

Hmm .. a couple posts in THIS thread between members discussing how to best to handle Skywatcher made you "do it" (not responding to Skywatcher), but his/her previous 172 posts didn't? ... interesting

And might I add that my reference to WolfKC's Hokey Scale was intended as a homage not a diss - I think what he's done is brilliant. But, this thread has got so far off track I'm leaving it here...

You know, I've been a bit harsh to SW in the past. And I hate being the odd man out (more odd than usual anyway ) But just because a bunch of previous posts were obvoiusly garbage doesn't mean we shouldn't be at least a little bit openminded to the possability of some truth, yes even some trueth on you know what forum. After all, even BA posted there recently.

Anyway, I didn't bother to read the whole thing, but I did look at a couple of the links. For example the two below and it seems to me there is a size diffrence. As I mentioned earlier the first thing that comes to my mind for this diffrence is the elipitical orbit of the earth. I'm not bothering to get exact numbers but I recall the distance to the sun varies from 92 to 94 million miles. That isn't much diffrence but maybe it's enough to see.
While the diffrence in the size of these images is not obvious, they are diffrent. Here's the 06/08 sun tinted blue with the 04/01 in orgional orange. And although I'm not sure of the math (if it applies to how much the sun changes size), here's a ball at 300 pixels placed over another at 293 pixles (300 * 92/94).

So maybe the percieved sun shrinkage is real, it's just a normal expected phonoma like camera flares. Or maybe there's another explination that isn't obvious. In any case I enjoy talking to you all.

PS: Here's an intersting note:
Quote:
The deviation from the true circle is not great: about 3 per cent; one would hardly notice it on a drawing. When nearest the sun, in the perihelion... the earth is about three million miles closer than in the apherlion... Acordingly it is 186 days from spring to fall equinox, no the northern half of th gobe and 179 days from fall to spring, also a 3 percent diffrence. Summer in our hemisphere (northern) is about a week longer than winter.

It is a known phenomenon - SOHO is not at a static distance from the Sun at all times - as it follows a 'halo' orbit, its' distance is not constant!

JamesTKirk showed this link before and it contains a couple of diagrams on SOHO's orbit.

there is a further explanation here

from the link:

Quote:
No spacecraft is actually orbiting at the L1 point. For SOHO there are two main reasons: the unstable orbit at the L1 point and facility of communication in a halo orbit. If SOHO was sitting directly at the L1 point, it would always be right in front of the Sun. The trouble is that the Sun is very noisy at radio wavelengths, which would make it very difficult to tune into the radio telemetry from the spacecraft. By putting it into a halo orbit, we can place it so that it's always a few degrees away from the Sun, making radio reception much easier.
There you have it WolfKC - perfectly explainable - add another Badge to your debunker uniform!

Actually, Ba will level with Skywatcher. Yeah, the sun shrank a bit. It was due to the Fenris Gerbil. It escaped from its Habitrail of Doom and began trying to stuff it into its cheek pouches before Ba came along and caught the rodent. Sorry if this caused any distress. Ba cleaned it off as best he could.

I thought the same thing - until I read that L1 is not quite stable, and the sun can get in the way of communications with SOHO.... G'nite Wolf!
