I have been thinking about a new interpretation as an extension to the SAP – ‘’strong anthropic principle.’’ The Metaphysical Anthropic Principle is supposed to be a unique extension to the SAP, so that observation plays a fundamental part in the building of reality. So it’s very ontological at best.
This extension works well with the SAP, which states instead of the Weak AP saying that the universe is the way it is because it’s the way we observe it, this theory states the adverse of that the universe is the way it is so that we could exist. All the statistics of neutron mass, complexity of life, tuning of cosmology ect, are the way it is so that we could exist. The MAP (the Metaphysical Anthropic Principle) works at bringing the importance back to the observer. The process of decoherence destroys many notions of an observer-dependency with the universe at large. However, there is a theory not stated very well in physics. Why it hasn’t I am not entirely sure, but I would put the main part of it down to very little investigation and sweat put into the academic world. According to the Wheeler-Delayed Choice Experiment, the observations we make today can and do effect the laws of physics in the past (1). This means that if humans can reduce a wordline of a photon for instance, then it is also plausible that we change the universe also making arbitrary observations. Simply put… mindless ponderings create. (2) Somehow… a simple observation can create a past event if it is in a state of superpositioning. I realized that there was also a metaphysical side to this; and that was to do with how much information we contribute to the universe, and is the underlying principle behind the MAP. Just exactly how much definition do we add to reality? This is one thing that human observation and measurement has over decoherence. We do actually add quite a bit of information… Somehow, when an observation is made by a human being, we name reality through our thoughts alone. Looking at a particle and being consciously aware of it simultaneously is far much more descriptive than a simple case of hydrogen atoms collapsing into a single state. An atom cannot know the things of what we are observing. But we can. So, in short, the metaphysical anthropic principle would state that we add to reality definition… and how defined and meaningful would reality be if we were not here? Can we even talk about a situation, since we are referring to life now without an observer… and that doesn’t mean very much. What is life without an observer there to measure it? So with this argument, I could see relationships with the SAP. Just imagine it. Because we can add details to the universe in a unique way, we must add the greater detail to the universe than the universe can do itself alone. And for that reason, we might even be shaping up the big bang right now with our observations (3). Some how, we are sending messages back through time every time we make an observation. Astrophysicist Fred Hoyle (passed away in 2001), postulated that this should be a serious thing to consider in physics. He gave an example of flipping a coin a 100 times, and asks.. ‘’Is there a message in there, like some kind of cosmic morse code?’’ Time, even though it is strenuously pressed does not have a specific flow, does have some kind of dual flow, or directionality. The nature of time is quite strange, so that there is a flow from the past, and a flow to the future. This allows information to travel correctly – especially those types of information speculated to move at superluminal speeds. (1) – It was verified in 2001 by the Eraser Experiment… and advanced experiment of the Delayed Choice. (2) –Dr. Wolf has went so far as to analyze how we could change an event in our past histories and not know, because consciousness and memory would have to fit that information. (3) –Parallel Universes... The Search for Other Worlds - 1985 .................................................. .. ''what does the anthropic principle say...'' The Anthropic Principle is not well-defined. But it has been catalogued into four distinct types by Prof Tipler and Barrow in their controversial book, ‘’The Anthropic Cosmological Theory, and they are stated as: WAP, SAP, PAP and FAP WAP (Weak Anthropic Principle) Is probably the most accepted of the interpretations of the Anthropic Principle sets, and it directly observes and deals with a ‘’selection bias’’ that is founded. It puts a certain limit on what statistical outcomes there might be. There has been great speculation that WAP cannot be a scientific description at all. It doesn’t seem to explain anything, but instead act more like a philosophical argument. Some of the usual aspects the AP covers is the actual conditions we observe today… three space dimensions and one times dimension is the only way our three-dimensional world could cohere. In fact it goes much deeper than this. In the beginning t<1, the universe was ruled by quantum effects. This means that the universe ‘had’ to choose a single reality out of an infinite amount of set-up positions laid out for it… and some how, fine tuning allowed this very universe to exist! It seems to be that the principle itself is saying that the conditions today are the way they are because that is the way we observe them. A ‘’back-reaction theory,’’ can state that it be seen (also) the other way round, by saying that we observe things today the way the are, because reality is the way it is. Some have interpreted this by saying that the AP states that the universe began so that we could exist. Take proton-neutron mass. They are found to be nearly similar, by something like two electron masses… It was Werner Heisenberg who classed them with a symmetry called Isospin. If the difference in mass was ever so slightly bigger, let’s say another electron mass, they would not be able to make stable nuclei, and thus would have had profound implications in everything – in every compound, in every macroscopic object, containing something like 10^22 atoms, or the 7*10 to the 27 atoms in a human body… This is so very fine, but it doesn’t end there. If the neutron had a charge, things would be erroneous for the production of like quantum systems. Even the gravitational mass of the proton, were it to be different, the universe would not have been able to form stars… making life-giving planets an impossibility to sustain even the simplest prokaryote. Taking mass into account, even the slightest change increase in the protons mass would have caused the universe to collapse and contract: remember, there is something like 335,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 protons out of the observable 10^80 particles in the universe. Of course, spacetime may be predictable under a single equation describing the universe. This has become to be known as GUT’s, or Grand Unification Theories. Also known as the Theory of Everything (TOE’s), it is the hypothesis that everything has an underlying rule why even things like a proton and electron exist, and why they would even contain the masses they did. But recent developments in modern physics seems to be showing us that if there is some kind of ultimate rule of the universe, it would be unpredictable to experiment due to not only the Uncertainty Principle, but also because of the gradual disturbance of a ‘’Chaotic System’’, called Chaos Theory. Cosmic Coincidence of the Anthropic Principle Also, we would need to ask why the universe began inflation when it did… as we know, inflation was the result of a particle, called the inflaton. If it was any later, it would have had profound and devastating effects on life. Any lesser, and inflation would have entangled with the nucleosynthesis, and would have diluted essential matter before any coupling had occurred as we see it today. In fact, the Anthropic Principle has been said to be the way it is, because we are the way we are. Fred Alan Wolf describes the Anthropic Principle as, ‘’the notion that the universe expanded so that we could exist.’’ Funny this isn’t it? Is this entire universe a garden for the human? Likewise, in quantum physics, we learn that a universe is lame without an observer – nothing has texture or definition… nothing in short would have meaning, thus no existence. We might see a God in all of this… If the universe is tuned exactly so that we could exist, we might ask if it is in fact a shadow of some particular intelligent design. Such notions should not escape us. The Sun is about 15 million km away, and it takes a photon about 8.3 seconds to reach earth, but if the sun was any closer, we would not be able to survive the heat… likewise, if the Sun was any further away, it would be too cold. Also, the moon has profound influences on the wave forces on earth. The Moon, neither being too far or too close creates a stable field for earth. The Sun is also 333,350 times larger than Earth. If it was half this size, 100,000 years ago, man would not have appeared. Instead, our Sun would have expanded to be a Red Giant, frying everything on board Terra Firma before settling down to become a black dwarf… SAP (Strong Anthropic Principle) This interpretation differs from what the Weak Theory states. Instead of the Weak AP saying that the universe is the way it is because it’s the way we observe it, this theory states the adverse of that the universe is the way it is so that we could exist. All the statistics of neutron mass, complexity of life, tuning of cosmology ect, are the way it is so that we could exist. Again, this can be linked to some kind of Intelligent Design, whether that is a vacuum intelligence, or a God. This theory however falls apart in the multiple universe theory, since in the Parallel Universe Interpretation, all outcomes are carried out, so life isn’t that important in this universe. PAP (Participatory Anthropic Principle) Is probably not very well accepted apart from Copenhaganists. It takes into account the Copenhagen Interpretations phenomena of the Wave Function Collapse, (which is the sudden reduction in quantum statistics to a single value of 1). The Copenhagen states that the world is only an existing potential before observation. On universal scales, the PAP states that the entire universe and only universes with observers in their histories become real. But in the 1990’s decoherence was observed, and the Collapse of the Wave Function through human collapse was not the only way to reduce a wavelike system. FAP (Final Anthropic Principle) This is the notion that the Strong Principle requires an intelligence that obeys quantum rules, in which once it is created, it cannot be destroyed. Prof Frank Tipler assert that Intelligence, as painfully obvious distinction from individual intelligent beings, is self-perpetuating and eternal. Furthermore, it will grow more and more powerful until it becomes "God". Frank Tipler is not unknown for his controversial theories. Designing massive time machines in space, future postulations of mankind transferring thoughts and emotions and maybe the soul on nanotechnology drifting out in space, to his theory of proton bubbling to explain how Jesus walked on water, he is indeed a vivid thinker. |

You heretic you! :-) Hope you like a nice fire burning under your feet.
But seriously, this is the same idea about an observer created reality, well covered by Wheeler. I think his Particapatory Anthropic principle covers the basics of this theory. However, it makes as much sense as any other theory which tries to explain the observer related coincidences seen in both quantum mechanics and the unexplained biocentrism of our universe. And it surely makes more sense than the occam's razor breaking ideas about multiple this and that, many worlds this and that. You know science has hit rock bottom when we need multiples to explain such coincidences. No wonder string theory is so dissapointing and banal. Get you flak jacket on though :-) The crap will hit the fan. Last edited by Jetlack : 23-April-2008 at 08:24 AM. Reason: spelling |
