I listen to George Noory. In fact, I'll be on the show tomorrow night.

As far as I know, nothing is headed our way as described by either James McCanney (who has never, to my knowledge, ever said anything that is correct) or Wayne Green and David Booth. These people are pseudoscientists, and are rarely if ever correct.

Read my pages about Planet X on the main BA site to see why.

Which planet? There's a couple of them now, including Venus, apparently.

Look through this forum. You'll see a large number of people who are not afraid. Unless it's invisible, and massless, there's nothing there to harm us. And if it is invisible and massless, then it probably can't harm us anyway.

Ut, good point. =D>

BA, better make sure your injections are up-to-date. I finally went by the C2C site --- and felt --- (shiver) --- like I was exposed to something not so nice. (grin)

I will be listening when your on the show Thursday, do many us a favor.

I know George will ask you what you think about Green & Booth's September predicitions about something hitting the South Pole, and that they claim only the (1000) Elite Astronomers down at the South Pole can see this object coming.

Let them have it , debunk Green, Booth and McCanney..

Oh by the way sarongsong E-mailed David Booth about the 1000 Astronomers down at the Antarctica this past year and this was David's response.

The information I have comes from a number of people I know at NASA, JPL, University of Chicago and The Russian Acadamy of Sciences. I also have a close friend who pilots one of the charter runs to Antarctica. Of course the information they've given me
may be wrong.
Thanks for writing, David.

He said Quote: Of course the information they've given me

That's not what he was saying the other night on Noory's show. You figure he would stick to his guns but he did not.

Keep up the good work Phil debunking these loonies..

Default ok. I feel better

Thank you.. I guess I am impressionable at 2am when the lights are out and I'm listening to C2C's horror stories. I am addicted to that show but if the headphones dont kill me by way of a brain something or other, Im going to die of a nervous breakdown by listening to George's guests go on and on about the doomsday scenarios. :-({|= Thanks all of you for making me feel better..

You'll find that there's a LOT of level headed -- well, most times -- people here.
And welcome to the BABB idontwanttodie.

The simplest solution to this is, instead of listening to CoastToCoast (and supercharging your subconscious and/or dreams with nonsense), tune that radio to the local classical station. Trust me on this one...the voice of experience says it works wonders.

The BA's gonna be on Thursday nite (which is Friday morning here)? Ammunition restock time -- the first hour guest Wednesday night is our friend Mr Hoaxland!

Sic 'em, BA!!!

The world is coming to an end again?!? What is this, the 10th time in the past year?

The world is coming to an end again? Oh dear. My biggest problem with this scenario is that I can never decide if I should run clockwise or counter clockwise in a circle while screaming at the top of my lungs.

There have been many, many predictions of the end of the world. They've all been wrong so far, and this is just the latest batch.

And we've had plenty of people come here who have been frightened by some pseudoscientific astronomical doomsayer (mostly from Nancy's Zetadoom of last May), so you're not alone. But what they feared didn't happen, and neither is whatever you're worried about.

Hello

Quote:
Green & Booth's September predicitions about something hitting the South Pole, and that they claim only the (1000) Elite Astronomers down at the South Pole can see this object coming.
I've never quite understood this bit. We, in the Northern Hemisphere, can easily view the North Star without being on the North Pole. Why would one need to be on the South Pole to view the similar spot over the South Pole? Seems pretty much any land mass in the Southern Hemisphere would do it...

...or am I missing something?

Thank you,

You know, I find the Planet X and end-of-the-world stuff fun, because it's so over the top, you just have to laugh at it.

But the downside is that it really does play on the fears and take advantage of people like idontwanttodie. Its really cruel.

Would the fear that Mars' moon is hurtling headlong to destroy us all be called Phobophobia?

And speaking as one of the very lucky astronomers who has been to the South Pole (four times as my Mother tells anyone who will listen) I can state that even today South Pole Station has a population of fewer than 100 in winter (i.e. at night) and the ratio of support personel to science staff is about 8-10 to 1 so even if all the science staff were astronomers ... not the case ... these reports were off by a factor of about 100. Just a few years ago only about 18-20 were there in winter and only 1-2 doing astronomy.

Incidently, I was there in summer (daytime) ... I just was not willing to be stuck for more than 9 months with no way to come and go ... only my telescope got to see the stars.

It's actually the fear that bad things will happen if you take 13 pictures of it. That's called "triskadecaphotophobophobia" or "tridecaphotophobophobia" for short.

Here are just the dates of end of the world predictions, from 30 CD to 1990 CE. These were made not only by crackpots but by the established churches and governments. A couple are so good that I had to leave in a few details.

About 30 CE
About 60 CE
About 90 CE
2nd Century CE
365 CE
375 to 400 CE
500 CE
968 CE
992
1000-JAN-1
1000-MAY
1005-1006
1033
1147
1179
1205
1284
1306
1346 and later The black plague spread across Europe, killing one third of the population. This was seen as the prelude to an immediate end of the world. Unfortunately, the Christians had previously killed many of the cats, fearing that they might be familiars of Witches. The fewer the cats, the more rats. It was the rat fleas that spread the black plague.
1496
1524
1533
1669
1689
1736 OCT-13
1792
1794
1830
1832
1843-MAR-21
1844-OCT-22
1891 or before
1914 (1915, 1918, 1920, 1925, 1941, 1975 and 1994, etc. were other dates per the Watchtower Society (WTS))
1919 DEC-17.
1936
1940 or 1941
1948
1953-AUG
1957-APR
1959 APR-22.
1960
1967
1970's
1972
1973
1974
1975
1981.
1981
1982
1982 Astronomers John Gribben & Stephen Plagemann predicted the "Jupiter Effect" in 1974. They wrote that when various planets were aligned on the same side of the sun, tidal forces would create solar flares, radio interruptions, rainfall and temperature disturbances and massive earthquakes. The planets did align, as seen from earth, but nothing unusual happened.
1984 to 1999
1986
1987 to 2000
1988 Hal Lindsey had predicted in his book "The Late, Great Planet Earth" that the Rapture was coming in 1988. You can watch Lindsey peddle his trash every night on your local religious TV channels.
1988-MAY
1988-OCT-11 Edgar Whisenaut, a NASA scientist, had published the book "88 Reasons why the Rapture will Occur in 1988." It sold over 4 million copies.
~1990

After 1990 these things just get too numerous even to list just the dates.

BTW, in every case, nothing happened.

Well, I wouldn't exactly describe the Black Plague as "nothing happened". But the something that happened was just the reason for predicting more happening, so I'll let this one slide.

You're right. Should have made that "None of the predictions happened." Thanks. Rats! Where was Sylvia Browne when we needed her?

Actually, follow up research released last summer concluded that the world ending was postponed to 24 July 2004 at 6:18 PM. Pacific, presumably. The Governor was unavailable for comment.

Well, if you are going to build engineering exercises, you might as well do it someplace nice, like Hawaii. Hmmmmmmmmm, maybe they need some help.

One of the people I work with here is packing her bags to head off to the CFHT on Mauna Kea (blasted grad students, and their sweet, sweet adventures). She bought a new parka for the trip. Ahh astronomy, one of the few professions in the world where you'd pack a parka for a summers-long trip to Hawaii.
