So I was reading this: http://edition.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/05/11/space.venus.reut/index.html

and came across this:

"Something wonderful, something marvelous is happening on June 8th and will be witnessed and experienced by millions of people all over the world," Gordon Bromage, a professor of astronomy at England's University of Central Lancashire, told a news conference Tuesday.

"It is an extremely rare astrological event."

regarding the Venus transit.

How hard can it be to copy something down and NOT change it?

I was thinking (or at least hoping) the same thing.

I'll bet Dr. Bromage gets a few emails about this--I expect it'll change soon. :)

Are we sure this isn't a spelling error on the part of the journalist, or that said journalist even knows there's a difference between astrology and astronomy?

The most likely explanation is that the journalist is at fault. It's happened before.

As long as we're talking about astrology, are the astrologers getting into as much a frenzy about the transit as the astronomers ( especially the amateurs) are?

I don't think so, at least I haven't heard much.
