The Bad Astronomer
05-July-2004, 07:14 PM
Hi folks! I wanted to start a thread for people to talk about the C2C show tonight. Hopefully this will keep a half dozen of them from popping up on the board. I check the BABB constantly during the shows, to see what people are saying, but mostly in case y'all have any good comments I can use on the show. A hundred brains are better than one. Usually. 8)
Don't forget that Wolverine has the PalTalk room open (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14453), and he will be streaming the show for those of you who otherwise can't hear it.
The show starts at 10:00 p.m. Pacific (US) time, and I'll be on around 11:00.
Hope to see you here tonight!

Just read the page on McCanney's nonsense. Shows that there's no shortage of psedoscientists out there.
I was a bit confused on the part about solar wind. BA write that the wind is ionized, but electrically neutral. I'm curious what the difference is. I know when something is ionized it either gains or loses electrons. But how is it electrically neutral?

Electrically neutral means that there is no net charge. For each positive charge (a proton, for instance), there is one negative charge (an electron), so the wind as a whole doesn't have any total electrical charge. A box of atoms is electrically neutral. If the atoms in that box were ionized, but no electrons escaped the box, the box would still be electrically neutral.
To keep the post on topic, I agree that making it sticky (at least for the next few days) is a good idea.

Don't you have a bearby radio station carrying it? I am listening on WLS AM 890 out of Chicago, at 50MW. Although it is staticy due to nearby thunderstorms.

Closest I foung was one out of Bloomington and there is no way to pick that up at all except over the net. To be honest, I prefer net casts for AM, it's so much easier and better sounding IMO.

Hoagland hasn't taken down his claim that Cassini will be likely destroyed by the SOI.
But now he is claiming that hyperdimensional space is what prevented the catastrophe, by slowing down Saturn's rotational rate.

Welcome to the board xah. Actually if it was coming directly at us like that it'd miss because the Earth is moving. If a comet was going to hit us then it would actually be on an intercept course sort of like two cars coming up to a crossroads, and so we'd be able to see the tail. Hope that helps. :)

First, welcome to the BABB.
Second, often the largest feature of a comet is its coma, which surrounds the nucleus in all directions. So for these comets (and just about all comets, since I pretty sure 99% of them have comas), the direction of the approach would have little (pardon me) impact on its being observable.

the tail always points away from the sun, irrespective of the direction the comet is travelling in. there will almost certainly be a moment where we will see it 'sideways'. i'm not an expert, but i'm guessing there's more light to be seen from a comet than just the tail.

Thanks for all the welcomes.
It does seem that if a comet came in at the "wrong" angle we would see the tail only at a very oblique angle. Might be tough to spot.
In any case, there would be two different types of problems here. The first is a comet that is actually on a collision course with the sun and also collision course with Earth, but it will hit the Earth first. Here, the tail is pointed directly away from the sun, likely at nearly a 90 degree angle. The tail on such a comet could be difficult to spot from Earth. Once we get the astronomy station set up on Mars (!), though, no problem.
The second would be a comet that is in orbit around the sun. This type of comet would be easier to spot, even if it was on a collision course with Earth.
Then there's the coma.
Does that sound right?

Yes, but...let's look at infrared. There are no visible colors that match up. In other words, the choices re the visible colors that represent the "invisible" colors/wavelengths, IIRC, are completely arbitrary. So green and blue could be left out as appropriate. Lots of other colors to choose from. :)

That leaves purple, red, orange, yellow. Then people will think a false-colored subject is on fire. That would probably be an improvement, though.
It might help if they stuck the text "FALSE COLORS! Green is not vegetation! Blue is not oceans!" in the image all over anything not important, just to remind people. It seems like mere captions and attached explanatory text often get ignored.

Do all these talk show guys just call each other?
I was wondering that too. Any HAM people on here, were some of those HAM, etc. call letters?
Nope, those would all have a number in them. They sounded like radio stations.

Why does Nooney keep calling Phil, Phillip?
Well, he is Philip Plait after all.
I think it has something to do with verbal signals as to how George feels about what's going on. You can also read his voice tone as to whether or not he agrees with what Phil's saying or where he's going. 8)

Hoagland hasn't taken down his claim that Cassini will be likely destroyed by the SOI.
But now he is claiming that hyperdimensional space is what prevented the catastrophe, by slowing down Saturn's rotational rate.
It's all here (http://www.enterprisemission.com/_articles/06-30-2004_Cassini/addendum-cassin_imission.htm).
Just read Hoagland's claims. He's just nuts! N-V-T-S! Nuts!
By the way, what's the REAL reason Saturn seems to have slowed down?
Also, where I can find times for when C2C is on the air in different area? In particular, I'm looking for times and station for Norfolk, VA, and Fort Lauderdale, FL.

times and station for Norfolk, VA, and Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Your times should be 0100 EDT (the show starts at 2200 PDT) as for local stations. Go to "Coasttocoast.com" and go to the affiliates list, this should give you local stations that you can tune into.
Finally found a local station to listen... and it's not Phil anymore. Who's this other guy, and what's he on about with trucks and such?
You may have been listening to the first hour. Some affiliates rebroadcast the 1st hour to fill the original 5 hour time slot to kill time until their local morning show begins. George was interveiwing Stephen Quayle in the first hour of the show. He is known for having "unique" views.

Great job again, as always Phil. Don't debate Richard Hoagland. It's like trying to debate someone's personal delusions. You guys just aren't even in the same Universe - there is very little common ground to debate upon.
I was surprised at how angry and hurt these people are with people with any skepticism toward UFOs, alien civilzations on Mars, or anything that brings them down to earth to a little place we like to call reality.
Is there anything we can do to keep Bad Astronomy in print?

Some of those people are soooo annoying! The last one remains "100% in support of Hoagland" because "we all make mistakes". What?! When was the last time anyone heard Richard Hoagland admit to a mistake? If he did, we would all take him more seriously.
When NASA clarified that the "face" was just a mesa with accurate photography, if Hoagland had admitted his errors, I might be interested in other things he had to say. Instead, he twists what he wants to his advantage and ignores the rest.
Top this off with having to read his supporters accusing Phil Plait of the very thing Hoagland does, and my head wants to explode!!!

When NASA clarified that the "face" was just a mesa with accurate photography, if Hoagland had admitted his errors, I might be interested in other things he had to say.
It really is worse than "that"!
For years, Hoagland cried and cried..."If NASA would only re-image the area, and if it were shown that it was not a "face", then he would be satisfied with the result."
So what does NASA do? They re-image the area at a higher resolution, proving that it didn't resemble a "face" at all.
So did Hoagland change his "tune"? HECK NO!! He STILL "blathers" on and on about this and that, proving IMO, that NO EVIDENCE would change his mind.
Hardly objective reasoning.
