This rule of one game per month won't work anymore, it's days are really short numbered :D

There are a LOT of amazing games coming out this month.

X-Box:

- The game with a cult following, none other than Halo 2.
- Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.

Well, the sum total of new games I hope to get before the end of the year reads:

Donkey Konga
GTA: San Andreas.
Myst IV: Revelation

All of which, if I wasn't busy catching up on games I already own, and wasn't broke, I could buy today.

My PC isn't going to cope with Half Life 2, I suspect, so I'm waiting for a free demo (in an utterly insane decision, the current benchmark tool is only available to those who have already paid for the game).

Prince Of Persia has taken the wonderfully romantic look of the original and totally ruined it with an unwarranted attempt to appeal to the youth of America with a 'dark' styling. Yuck.

Halo 2 can wait until after I bring myself to bother completing The Library on the original.

Fight Club is possibly the worst idea in the history of film tie-ins. I look forward to a boxing game based on a Punch-Drunk Love license next.

MGS 3 can wait until after I bring myself to bother wading through the cutscenes as far as some actual gameplay in MGS 2.

I've already commented on how utterly tragic the handling is in NFS:U2

Nothing else appeals on that list.

(yes, I am being curmugeonly today).

I'd add Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War to the PC list. If you like RTS style games, this one is a lot of fun.

I'd say my only gripe is Relic clinging to the old base building model that RTS's seem to have to have. It's like a law or something. I'd have been happier if they'd done something like Myth or Myth 2 where you pick your units and upgrades before the battle and that is what you get to use. Perhaps on maps designed to be long encounters, you'd have rules for reinforcements. But I'd much rather get to the fighting and ignore the Sim Base part of the game.

That said, it's a fun game, I enjoy playing it. The gripe i make is fairly mild really, and some people do like that base building aspect.

Couple of console titles worth checking out:

X-Men Legends. Decent little action RPG. Bit on the easy side, but still fun. I'd suggest waiting on the price to drop before getting it. Alot of fun if you have friends to play with.(Available on all consoles)

Pikmin 2. Fun little puzzle/strategy game. Might be a litttle too cute for some, but if you get past that it's a good game. Not exactly a new release, but hasn't been out long. (Gamecube)

Midway Arcade Treasures 2. Loads of old arcade games. Some really good ones in there like Xenophobe, Wizards of Wor, MK2 and MK3, Gauntlet 2, and more. (all consoles)

Well I could go on, but this season has been really great and really awful for gamers. Really great because we have all these awesome new games out to play. Really awful because I doubt there's any way most people could afford them all, even if you could, who has time to play them all.

[Edit]

About World of Warcraft. It's due out in open beta in about a week. You'll be able to try it out for free for a bit. I don't know how long they plan to run the open beta. My guess is not very long.

I'll just bite my tongue about Everquest 2.

Without the base building, you just made the RTS into an RPG. If you favour the style of get out and fight, Warcraft is like that. Reign of Chaos held to some aspects of the classical RTS in base building, but you had a low population limit, could control only 12 units per group of soldiers, and you had an upkeep rate that kept you from developing large armies.
The exapansion pack Frozen Throne would probably appeal to you the most because a lot of the missions in the single player campaign don't involve much (or any) base building.

mid,

The requirements for Half Life 2 are supposed to be lower than those for Doom 3. You can also participate in Valve's steam preload and play Counterstrike: Source (I think this is for free) to check out the graphics engine. That's the engine that will be used for Half Life 2, so you can get a good idea of whether you will be able to play it on your PC or not.

Lol this worrying over specs reminds me of a comment I read somewhere about upgrading for Doom 3 - "And even if you can't afford a new video card for Doom 3, don't worry, Doom 3 also makes for a great slide show."

No, in an RPG you control only one, or maybe a small number of characters. You play by following the story and fighting villains part of the plot. (Well some RPG's have you fighting a lot more to gain levels, but I don't find them all that interesting)

Warcraft 3 was enjoyable. But it's even worse. Not only am I stuck base building, but gathering resources as well. Like I said, I don't enjoy the base building and worker management. I just want my army to meet the other guys and we see who is the better tactician. But yeah, WC3 was a pretty good game. If you liked it, you'd probably like Dawn of War.

I was suggesting they do something more akin to what is done in the tabletop version of Warhammer 40k. You get X points to spend on your army. You build your army from that, and that is what you get. I'd imagine it'd be possible to have preset armies for specific maps to expedite multiplayer games. Games wouldn't get drawn out looking for some guys last hidden farm either.

Absolutely - trying out Dawn Of War (helping a friend install it on their PC for their son), I was shocked how stuck in the old Dune 2 mould it still was.

A WH40K game under the Total War engine would be a far more interesting prospect.

edit - oh, and Tranquility: The CS: Source download is available only to those with either a pre-purchase of Half-Life 2, or a copy of CS: Condition Zero. Those of us just with the old Half-Life can't get it, apparently.

I keep hearing good things about Total War. If I recall, there's several versions. What's best to start with ? Rome ?

All RTS's these days follow the Dune II model (though mostly folks misattribute the style to Blizzard's RTS games). Last one I played that didn't do this was Myth 2. You had to use your units intelligently as you kept them from mission to mission, and they got better the more battles they survived. (though it was based on kills, so dwarves always wound up a bit lopsided in the experience department)

Rome : Total war is the easiest to start with.

But only if you really like strategy games will you enjoy it. Download the demo and try it out first.

What im looking forward to this month?

Half-Life 2
PoP
MOH: PA.

I was looking forward to Axis and Allies, but after playing the Demo and my concerns being confirmed by its gamespot review, im going to hold out on it. Hold out at least for the PC Gamer review, which i trust far more than Gamespot. But the fact that Gamespot confirmed my thoughts wont help alot. :-)

I've never been able to get into that series. I started with Shogun, but what turned me off was the constant reduction of honor if your battle runs overlong, even if the enemy is in a rout, only not off the screen yet.

I'm a defensive/maneuver fighter. None of my fights take less than a day. Absolutely none of them. My armies tend to be archer heavy, and they almost always run out of arrows about the time the enemy gives up for the day and decides to spend the evening running about like rabbits.

There's more than one day in a season, for crying out loud.

They messed it up again, did they? I haven't seen a review yet. I'll have to check out the demo sometime.

Of the games that are coming out, like, now (or almost now) I'm only significantly interested in Pirates and San Andreas.

03-November-2004, 01:10 PM
Pirates look interesting. I will have to check out more about it.

To say the truth. I do enjoy Rome: TW, but not for the real strategy stuff. I leave the city building and army building on automatic. I just manuver my troops and fight the battles for fun.
Depending on the next in the series i might not get it. If its French revolution era like i predict it will be then i might just for the fun of using cannons and muskets.

I'm still holding on in Star Wars Galaxies. I was in the Beta for the Jump to Lightspeed expansion, and now that I'm zipping around in an X-Wing, it finally feels like Star Wars.

I'm also in the closed Beta for the Combat Upgrade, and it looks promising as well. Hopefully, we'll have a game worth fighting in by Feb or March '05.

SWG, ugh... there is nothing on this earth, not the threat of death itself that could get me to play another game designed by the hack Raph Koster. Played UO when it came out and continued for a year and a half. After that experience, I just don't trust the man to make games I will like.

If MMORPG's are your thing, City of Heroes is a fun one. Very casual in that it's easy to pop in, play for a bit then leave. Strips away a lot of nonsense that creeps into other MMORPG's.

No trade skills. For some that may be a minus. To me it's a plus as I don't think much of how item crafting is done in an MMORPG. Basiclly you collect in-game items, click a button, then get an item or the RNG god decides if you get an item or not. It's a game element that takes no skill at all, it's basiclly just a slot machine.

No items really. You get enhancements you can put into powers. But if you don't find them off enemies you fight, you can usually buy them. There's three ranges of enhancement, one better than the last. The enhancements also have a level that modify their effectiveness, but otherwise the benefit is the same regardless of level. So there's not really any unobtainable items you feel like you missed out on (well there's one type, but you can do without them easily).

The game instead focusses on playing your role as a super hero and fighting villains and criminals. It does this very well in my opinion.

Currrently you can't fight other players. But they are going to add the option (it won't be forced on anyone, it's purely elective). There will be areas heroes can spar with one another and sometime next year the game's first retail expansion will be released adding the option to play villains.

Oh I forgot to mention, they add content to the game every 2-3 months. The first one added more areas and raised the level cap to 50. The second one added capes, some neat looking particle effects for characters (various kinds of auras, glowing eyes, etc). Also they added the ability to change around your characters powers. Well to get to the point, they add a lot of stuff and this is free.

Didn't even mention the costume designer. You can spend hours with this trying out differant combinations.

Yup-Yup. I second CoH. Its a extreamly fun game that does not take hours a day to play. You can play it for a half hour, do a few missions and leave for a month and your character will be exactly the same exacetly where you left him. No need to play every day. No need to bargin with other players to buy some magical thing that will wear out in a week. No need to deal with anoying cheaters who use programs to make super characters that kill yours in one shot. Its just pure fun. I've been playing from Beta non stop and have really enjoyed it. I will probobly play untill well after City of Villains comes out too.

It should be coming out next week -- Bandai Games lists a November 8th release date (just in time for the TV show's premiere this weekend on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim). </me notes date in personal calendar>

(I also have a copy the original PlayStation game that came out a few years back -- I got it from a friend who knew of my passion for GitS.)

But the big game I'm waiting for this month is Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, which comes out on the 17th. In fact, I'm so eager for it that I reserved my copy way back in June, when the local Electronics Boutique first got a stocking number for the game.

2. Far Cry (yeah I know, I'm sorry I haven't bought it sooner :D )
3. Sims 2
4. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
5. LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth (whenever it comes out)

7. Myst IV: Revelation
8. NFSU 2 (maybe - still pondering how wise this decision would be given my irritation with several aspects of the original game)
9. Max Payne 2 (yeah again I know I should have bought it earlier)

Americans are getting it early anyway. This is a bit of a sore point between the Europeans and the Americans. Nearly every big name game has been released early in the states.

This can lead to us seeing spoilers on the net from people that have already played it.

My only complaint with the single player campaign is it's too short and only covers the space marines. You don't get any ork, eldar, or chaos campaigns. Though that is pretty typical of Relic RTS's. They also seem to follow the Id philosophy of games, add in the token single player game but focus on the multiplayer aspect. In that regards it's a lot of fun, especially with the numerous ways to play a map (you can set differant victory conditions).

The AI can occasionally be a little retarded, but overall I think it's not too bad really. It does better on some maps than others.

Anyways, I am not trying to change your mind, just give you a second opinion on Warhammer (it's a fun game, I don't regret buying it). And it does have orcs (well orks, like there is a differance), humans, and elves (not to mention demons). Though the elves are called eldar, they're basiclly the same thing.

Strangely the opposite happened with one of the games thats gobbling my free time. Pacific Fighters appeared in the US weeks after other areas.

I finally got my new system (Good Job too since pacific fighters with full eye candy really tests it) and ended up with Tomb Raider (AoD) Legacy of Kain:Defiance and Raven Shield. Of course after going into virgin i got sucked in by their sales and bought NHL 2004 Homeworld2 and Morrowind. So many games so little time! Ill probably still be playing each when San Andreas arrives for the PC. Until then i have no games on the shopping list.

It usually happens with Football (real football, which Americans call "soccer") and Rally games that they come out in the US last. Japanese Shmups get so delayed for both western territories that its a lottery which they'll hit first, too. Ive given up trying to understand the comercial side of games here in the UK. I believe theres cases of games produced here in the UK being released in the US before the UK AND costing more in the UK than elsewhere.
One game ( i cant recall which) was made in the UK and was more expensive here than in the states. The game was duplicated and packaged in Germany but the explaination for the extra cost in the UK was shipping costs. Cheaper to ship to the US from germany than to the UK from Germany. :-s

Anone know of a good F-14 simulated game for a PC??? I was a big fan of "Tomcat - Fire at Will", but it's getting pretty old, and it didn't recognize my top o' the line video card when I bought my new PC a year ago.

Anyways, what I liked about the game was that it was more than just an F-14 flight sim. It had a story line, with good character development, interaction, etc. I also own Jane's F-18 flight sim, but it's missions are more "flight sim" oriented (aka: no interaction, excitement, etc). Do you get like a free month or something when you purchase the game or do you have to pay the online subscription straight away?

Yoshua
10-November-2004, 08:58 PM
You normally get a free month. I don't know of any exceptions if there are any.

Some games like AO and DAoC even let you try the game without putting any money up front (though DAoC is kind of sneaky, they will bill you after the trial phase is over and they don't inform you that they've charged you anything).

WoW is currently in open beta. Though if you haven't signed up already it's too late to get in. They closed down open beta signups.

Tranquility
10-November-2004, 09:15 PM
The open beta signups are only for people in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and (I think) the UK. I'm not in any of those places :D .
Anyway Blizzard said that they will be offering open betas for the other regions soon, so I'm waiting for that.

Incidentally, I finally got Far Cry today. The Cry engine is really powerful, the graphics and surroundings are magnificent, and I find it totally immersive. Pretty much enjoying it so far, it's a bit hard though. And I'm on vacation till the 20th and I have Far Cry and Doom 3 to play through and punish my video card.

When I went to buy the game, Ubisoft had a package that had Far Cry with two other games that Ubisoft published that apparently have been less than successful: Warlords IV (which is a turn based strategy game) and a game called In Memoriam which is puzzle solving and seems interesting so I'll be looking at that too. The bundle was like 2$ more than Far Cry alone so... :D

I caved yesterday and bought Call of Duty: United Offensive with a gift card for Target my mom had sent me. I figured it offered me a compromise: it's an expansion, and therefore not nearly as engaging as a full game like Rome: Total War or something, while still offering me a good amount of playing time for now. I'm not sure what's next on the list, but I think it'll wait until winter break.

The American Campaign is awesome. The last level where you have to defend the house was pure adrenalyn. I was down to only a few rounds by the time the mission ended. Man i loved it.

I've been playing a lot of Far Cry over the past couple of days. The thing is, the game is surprisingly open-ended within the levels themselves. So you find that you can avoid quite large skirmishes by applying more stealthy tactics, so I've been playing some levels a couple of times to try out different techniques.

Also I've found that the game gets quite creepy in some of the levels. I've only encountered the smaller mutated primates so far, and they sort of cut down a full armor suit in one hit. And if you're in a corner, forget about it. In the level when you're inside the research facility, just before you try to get on the helicopter to save Val, is dark and dreary and creepy with the noises from the mutants behind the closed door, and then they come rushing at you when the door is opened. I had fun in that stage though when I carefully entered into a room filled with mercenaries and went upstairs and opened the door to the cages with the mutants, who then ravaged the mercenaries. I was quite happy because those mercenaries are a major pain in the backside. There's no doubt about it, the game is hard.

BTW, are there any levels where Val and Jack Carver fight together? And if they do, how do those work? Do you have to protect her so she doesn't die, etc?

I finished CoD: United Offensive the other day. The SP missions were short but soooo awesome. Multiplayer is so cool too. I've been playing a lot of that lately. So much for studies!
