Old SciFi- movies

I'm looking for old science fiction movies from the 1970's and 1980's. Wich movies do you recommend?

The Abyss is more "fantasy" than "sci-fi". The science in it is godawful. The plot's also full of holes...

my point was that those four movies (although I may have been thinking of Leviathan or Deep Star Six, not the Abyss) are essentially the same movie.

A small group of people are isolated from the rest of the world, either in space, under the ocean or at the South Pole. A monster of some sort picks them off one at a time, and only the hero survives and defeats the monster.

Some do it better than others, but there's not much difference. Although Aliens is good just to hear Bill Paxton whine about the situation. "That's it, game over ..." etc.

you have a good point there. I wouldn't really consider the 80's to be old. The 70's maybe..

Of course I first saw Star Wars, at the age of six, at a drive-in, on a $5 a carload night in a huge station wagon. Those were the days, huh?

I grew up watching movies on our local creeper feature, so I lived in something like temporal flux: I might notice the difference in SFX, style, or quality, but I didn't really have any concept of "old" or "new."

I did like most of the George Pal movies - some of his that I especally liked: "Destination Moon," "When Worlds Collide," "War of the Worlds," "Time Machine," "7 Faces of Dr. Lao," and "The Power." I didn't much care for his last one (Doc Savage) though that was in the stated time frame.

For a more recent film, I would add "The Last Starfighter." The story is silly, but fun, and it is one of the first movies to use CGI heavily. Very primitive by modern standards, of course, but it was a very big deal at the time. If nothing else, it can help you understand how much things have changed in such a short time.

No doubt. Still, the "Weird Science" series was a lot of fun. That reminds me of "Real Genius" - another movie from about the same time.

No one mentioned Star Wars: Episodes IV - VI. Yeah, I know, "space fantasy". :wink:

Definitely Blade Runner and Alien.

The Terminator is O.K. also. And two comedies: Sleeper and Spaceballs.

This one is actually from the 60's but I enjoyed it then and again just a few weeks ago on the SciFi channel's oldies week. "Robinson Cruso on Mars" a story about an astronaut stranded on Mars. It's chock full of bad astronomy, primarily due to the "knowledge" about Mars and space travel at the time. Still a fun story. :D

Actually, I think they were M&M peanut candies.

My favorite things were the alien space ships. They took the Martian ships from War Of The Worlds (1959), pulled the little perriscope off the top and gave them increadable speed. Pretty good special effects for the time.
