Smelly Readers Banned From Calif. Library (http://dailynews.att.net/cgi-bin/news?e=pri&dt=050307&cat=strange&st=stranged88m953 80&src=ap)
A new county law aims to keep readers from reeking. Libraries in San Luis Obispo County have had their own rules banning offensive body odor since 1994, but the policy became law after the Board of Supervisors last month adopted an ordinance that lets authorities kick out malodorous guests.
"What is bad odor?" Macias asked. "A woman who wears a strong perfume? A person who had a garlicky meal?"
If I could only ban co-workers for wearing strong perfume…

We've had a man banned out of the University Library because of the odour of his feet (and the fact that he took off his shoes). There was quite a row about that for weeks.

This sound like something that may be targeting homeless people, who often hang out in libraries. I'd vote for keeping them and getting rid of the excessive perfume, myself.

In our case, he wasn't homeless. He was just extremely smelly :)

Visitors to 14 libraries and a bookmobile also could be asked to leave for fighting, eating, drinking, sleeping, playing games, and printing or viewing illegal materials on library computers.
"The point is to make the library a comfortable, safe place for everyone to use," said Moe McGee, assistant director of the San Luis Obispo City-County Library.
A strict code of conduct, officials argue, is needed to ensure one patron's right to use a public library doesn't infringe on the rights of another.
I think the law is loose, because so many things can fall under the category. It does make for a nicer place to do homework, read, or browse. :D

Why do people wear so much perfume or cologne?
A friend of mine actually asked me if her perfume was to strong, not necessarily for my comfort but because she found after using the same perfume for a while, she didn't smell it anymore because it became part of her immediate environment. Since she could not smell, she'd put more on until it was discernable, thinking that the strength was the same as previous whereas the rest of us start to choke. She didn't intentionally overdo it

I don't wear perfume at all. When your hair is as long as mine, the Aussie conditioner smell stays in it forever. 8)

She's got long hair as well (not as long as yours, but still over her shoulders). I don't think that is the reason she never wears much perfume though (but the soft odour of hair products sometimes is noticable indeed :P ). Most days, she doesn't wear any perfume, and if she does, she uses a soft odour in very small amounts. Using much perfume just wouldn't fit her person.

The key word is "subtle". You know a young lady has way too much perfume on when you can smell it when you're on your motorcycle and the nearest car is 50 feet away (I kid you not, this has happened to me).
Subtle, subtle, subtle - it's not supposed to knock you over the head from ten feet away. Sometimes so subtle that you have to have your nose only a couple of inches away. Perfume shouldn't be used to cover B.O. IMHO. This is not the 1700's when personal hygiene was shall I say "lacking" and the only thing to cover the BO was massive quantities of perfume.
BTW, please keep the Beautiful, Charlie, etc away from me.
Now freshly shampooed long hair is another thing - don't get me going on that.

So you agree that my s.o. has it right when she comes out with freshly shampooed long hair, accompanied by a LIGHT kind of perfume, only noticable when giving kisses? 8) It works on me anyway. 8)
BTW, any lady, young or old, has too much perfume when you smell it from meters away. Same counts for men where you have respiratory problems, a cold feeling and irritated eyes when they come closer than 10 meters...

IMHO she's got it right. Perfume should enhance and not overwhelm. Same thing for men's cologne. If you can smell it from more than a foot (0.3 meters) away, it's way too much.
I've known some ladies over the years whose idea of using perfume was equivalent to a cropduster spraying a field. #-o Those were the days I prayed for my sinuses to clog up.

Like one that does not smell like ice cold alcohol, and that does not knock you down llike half a liter of Bayley's, tastes as sweet and fresh as it smells, fits the person, stays long but very subtle in both smell and taste etc?

Would be nifty, but she's got quite a reserve in her closet, and as she uses it not often and in very small amounts, there is danger of the perfume going bad before it is used already, so I'll have to come up with something else. I can't look for myself, as I don't know exaclty where she keeps it and I won't be around there for some weeks anyway. Probably I can sneek in the question (no, not THE question :)) this weekend. I'll let you know by monday :).

Candy already is although odour isn't the word I would use. Sweetest smelling young lady would be more like it (as if I'll ever met her).
However, based on personal experience, each perfume has a slightly different scent depending on the person using it. Body chemistry alters the tone of the fragrance.

How do you define strong, though? How do you define unpleasant? Some of it's cut and dried, but other parts are not so. I agree with Trebuchet from page one that this is anti-homeless legislation in a politically correct package, but I'll bet the health nut, jog/bike/powerwalk crowd who wants to hit the library on the way home or after a workout is going to rebel over this.
As far as the strength of cologne/perfume, I swear, some people swim in the stuff. There was a woman a buddy and I saw at a gas station the other night with perfume so strong we smelled her across two islands of pumps with a stiff crosswind.

Strong is relative. I consider it to be strong if I can smell it from a distance and can easily figure out who is swimming in perfume.
Now was her perfume strong enough to throw down the smell of gasoline and hold it in a head lock?

When I went grocery shopping yesterday, I could smell cologne as I walked in the door. I tried to escape it by going to the vegetable section, but it followed me. I then went down the bread aisle, and it followed me. I looked around to see where it was coming from, because it was strong. There was an employee walking around the store that was the culprit. He just happened to keep going to the sections where I was shopping.
