NBC fined for indecency in "Martian volcano" photo
Associated News Fri 04/01/05 02:05 EDT (19:05 GMT)
Washington---The Federal Communications Commission has issued a $500,000 fine to NBC for a recent news report in which a photograph, said to depict a volcano on the surface of Mars, was displayed on the screen for several seconds. The FCC said it received thousands of complaints from concerned parents saying that the image, which aired during a news segment about recent scientific discoveries, was actually a close-up of a woman's nipple.
NBC representative Arlo P. Foli has insisted that the photograph showed exactly what the program claimed it showed.
. . .
"After reviewing the tapes, we have come to the conclusion that the concerns of the viewers who complained to us were valid," said Kevin J. Martin, the newly appointed FCC chairman. "Although it was displayed with a caption reading 'Olympus Mons, largest volcano in the Solar System,' the image does indeed appear to depict a nipple, most likely that of an elderly woman."
"While someone at NBC News may have thought this was a funny joke, we don't think nudity on television is anything to laugh at," Martin added.

Stands to reason: If Mars has a face, it should have a nipple. And since Mars is 4.6 billion years old, of course it would look like an old womans. Has anyone asked Hoagland about it? :P

^ a picture of Olympus Mons...
I can kinda...sorta see it...if it was a nipple, then that would have to be around 30x magnification...at a quick glance, I can see how someone could mistake it..

Well, first off, a mirror should help provide sufficient validation.
Second, a closeup of someone's nipple is hardly sexual... No more sexual than a closeup of someone's ear, really.

Why does the entire perimeter seem to end so abruptly? Was it an ocean that stopped the lava flows?
