View Full Version : Sympathy for the Royal

Okay, it's finally happened. I didn't think it would, but it did:

Just now, I've actually felt a measure of pity for (Prince) Charles and Camilla.

Doubts over Royal wedding date (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/mymod/rss/z/3991/sty/SIG=12ap0phmi/EXP=1112707252;_ylt=Aoo77UQPMtXH4WtFEBpoRU8E1vAI/*http%3A//news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/2/hi/uk_news/4407347.stm).

The Prince of Wales is discussing his wedding date with Royal aides after the Vatican said that the Pope's funeral would take place on the same day.

Man, in terms of this wedding, if they didn't have bad luck they'd have no luck at all, even considering how chaotic planning even civil cerimonies tends to be. Has anything been smooth and "as planned" for these two as of yet?

They waited years to be officially together, what's a few more "days"? 8-[

Yahoo News (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/050404/325/ffn67.html)

"As a mark of respect, His Royal Highness and Mrs Parker Bowles have decided to postpone their wedding until Saturday," said a spokeswoman at Clarence House, the prince's office.

Charles will be the Queen's representative at the funeral. Parker Bowles will not accompany him to Rome, Clarence House added.

Sounds like someone has wagged the finger - he was all for the wedding going ahead regardless.

Pretty much a no-win situation for Charles, isn't it? Anger Camilla by postponing, or basically cause a diplomatic scandal.

I say go for the scandal. Oh, wait, they already have.

I think mom is plenty POed at Charles already for giving grandma's ring to Camilla. I'm sure she intended that for one of the grandsons eventually.

Oh, dear.

How can I say delicately that since my son's lizards died, watching the Royal Family is the best thing outside a terrarium?

A former boss got married around the same time as Charles and Di. Sadly this meant that a large proportion of their wedding gifts were "Royal Wedding" memorabilia. To say that they were unimpressed by this outpouring of patriotism is an understatement. :)

The diplomatic scandal of going ahead with the wedding would have been as nothing compared to the scandal of stopping the Archibishop Of Canterbury from going to the funeral, as head of the Anglican Church, because he needed to stay behind to perform the wedding blessing...

Anyone seeing a Vatican conspiracy by setting the funaral date to friday so the future head of the Church of England had to change his wedding plans?
Some guys in the Vatican may still fume about Henry VIII. :P

I suppose the skys over Rome will be chockablock with fighters, it would be far to tempting with all those important people in one place for BinLadden not to at lease think about another attack.
I always thought a small plane packed with explosives would get through any defenses if it flew low enough.

Well, actually no; Charles and his consort would be just as married in the civil ceremony without a Church blessing. It's all a front just to make the marriage 'respectable' for the establishment.

I see that Prince Ranier of Monaco has just died - I wonder if his funeral will be on Saturday,
and will mumsy make Charles go to that one as well!

Maybe on Sunday, so he can squeeze his marriage between two funerals...
Other English make four weddings and a funeral...

I just saw something on t.v. about these state funerals, and I wondered why, as the reporter stated, Queen Elizabeth does not attend funerals, so Charles is expected to. Is there some long-standing rule about the Monarch not going to funerals, or it just Elizabeth's choice? Any Brits out there know the answer?

mike alexander

I suspect it's by choice; the funerals remind her too much of formal dinners at the Palace.

Apparently some are more interested now,as in the future anything with the original date will be more valuable. Already collectors are showing an interest.

I just saw a male streaker on CNN. He was quickly apprehended and dressed. The police then posed for photos with the guy.

Nice wedding. Camilla looked stunning. :D

Like Dutch radio said:
if you held a picture of Diana in front of your car on a cold morning, the ice would spontaneously melt from the windows. Hold a picture from Camilla in front of it, and the ice breaks off. :).

just as a side note.

Guess what Queensland gave price Charles etc...
for a wedding gift

A garden bench, but not for the palace or anything- it will be located in the prince Charles hospital, in Brisbane.

It's a improvement on the last marriage though where we gave them a book with a cover made of cane toad skin. :o

I see some very brief mentions:

However, the only public disturbance was a streaker who broke away from the crowd and was quickly apprehended by police.

I thought both dresses were lovely. And no, I'm not quite sure why I sat there and watched the whole thing. They looked (rather understandably) really, really happy, though, which was a big part of it. I'm a completely soppy person when it comes to weddings. Contrary to the best efforts of our tabloid media, Princes Harry and William looked really happy for them, too, which was particularly nice.

About Philip (http://www.philiptreacy.co.uk/flash/welcome2.html)
My mother had chickens, geese, pheasants and ducks, so all the ingredients of the hat were in my house.

The streaker clip was on Jay Leno.

I'm a bit annoyed they are only making fun of Camila's looks. Charles isn't exactly 'charming'. Though I remember something long past naming him the world's most eligible (desirable) bachelor.

They certainly look like they belong together.

You've got to take into account that Chuckles is what, in his mid-50's? Not exactly a young buck anymore.

And what is it with Camilla and oversized hats? Is she hiding an FM transmitter up there or what? Cripes, gimme 10 meters of copper cable and ten minutes and she'll pick up satellite television from half the countries in the Northern Hemisphere...

Apparently, she said something to the affect that his great grandfather had an affair with her great grandmother, so why don't they have a go at it. I like Camilla. She reminds me of someone I know.

yeah, yeah--I know I'm getting to this late. computer troubles. you can't expect me to not comment, can you?

I saw a beautiful bit on CNN about Charles and Camilla, though I didn't watch the wedding. it compared Charles to the Ugly Duckling--but instead of becoming a swan, he married one. and they were both miserable. and so now, he's got another duck, and he's much happier, and what's the problem?

no, she's not as attractive as Diana was, though I never thought Diana was as beautiful as everyone else seemed to. (well, outside; she was, by all accounts, a marvellous person, and certainly a great public figure.) but Charles . . . well, it's a good thing the boys take after their mother. the only attraction about the wedding to me is that two people are finally going to be happy.

though I did also feel that they couldn't catch a break--I heard the honeymoon was officially postponed so he could go to Rainier's funeral. poor Charles.

By a lot of accounts Diana was vain, attention seeking and entirely self serving, not traditionally marvelous traits.

As for the boys' looks, one takes after his mother, the other looks exactly like his father which is why he is ginger and looks nothing like Charlie. :D

I think Harry looks like the youngest brother of Charles. I'm sorry, I don't know his name. There was a replay of Chuck and Di's wedding on recently, and the youngest brother (mid teen's) walked down the aisle behind Charles. The resemblance is uncanny.

I'd had the opportunity to speak with them as one of the older cubs when they visited Canada in the early '80s.

She was rather quiet when I'd (briefly) met her, so I didn't really get a good sense of her personality. I think she was running out of steam and needed a rest to catch up with herself. Charles was a lot more energetic about the whole thing, and stopped to chat me up a few minutes while he was working the crowd. Seemed to be a likable fellow if you can get past the "working persona". Seemed to be pretty relaxed, actually.

*wry grin* As soon as he turned his back my cub pack got mobbed by paparazzi.
