Is this similar to what we used on Noriega with loud heavy metal music? I'm old, my mind is slipping. 8-[

Expect massive abuse of this weapon. You know how the Isrealis and Palestinians are... Both sides of the conflict seem to lack any scruples.

No, it sounds like this is an infrasonic weapon. I know they've been experimenting with this stuff for some time, but it wasn't clear if it was practical. I guess we'll find out now. Of course, there are also experiments with microwave beam crowd dispersal weapons. A similar idea: It makes you feel as if your skin is on fire, but a short exposure doesn't cause damage.

LOL! I had forgotten about that--they played rock music outside where he was taking refuge in Panama. They used music on Saddam too, I remember reading.
Does this affect non-humans in the area, too?

The beam weapon would seem to be less damaging overall. Ears are far more sensitive than skin.

So it's like a dog whistle, but for humans? 8-[

Not really. I tried googling to find a good reference, but most of the stuff that comes up is heavy woo-woo about mind control and such. Certain low frequency sounds that are near or below the bottom of the human range of hearing can cause nausea and other unpleasant effects. It isn't really about hearing. Low frequency fluid shifts in the vestibular canal can apparently do much the same thing as being on a rapidly rocking boat ... you get the idea. The sound level has to be pretty high, there probably would always be some audible sound, and there can be multiple effects.

I knew we could get an astronomy connection to this somehow. A friend of mine says it might make a great bear defender. He has a bear problem where he lives, and so do some astronomer friends with remote observatories. Here's his email quote:
"Might be good for chasing off critters such as bears. On the advice
of a Div. of Wildlife guy, I use a marine air horn to chase off
bears and it works very well, better in fact than more expensive
pepper spray. Several years ago a bear and two cubs walked past on
the deck one afternoon as I was reading in the living room. I
grabbed the air horn and waited at the front door for the mama bear
to get there. She got the air horn in the right ear from about two
feet away, turned almost a somersault, and headed back down the deck
leaving a trail of bear urine. We never say her again. (The DOW
guy also gave me rubber buckshot as a last resort but I haven't
tried it.)"
Scare Bears instead of Care Bears. Air horns are also good for chasing tournament golfers off courses during lightning storms.
