The Quadrantid meteor shower starts January 4. It is supposed to be great this year, especially for Western Europe and the Eastern N. A. It had been cloudy here every time a meteor shower or anything else comes 'round. The universe must be against me!

Thanks Tinaa, I'll make a mention of this in the newsletter. Can you give people any more details?

Quadrantid Meteor Shower

- peaks at January 7th 2004. Produces faint medium-speed meteors between late December and early January. Most activity occurs during a sharp peak on the night of January 3-4 (40 to 100 meteors/hour). The only major shower whose parent comet remains unknown. Radiant is in northern Boštes. Moonlight interferes.

I can add that one should look to the north/northeast. The radiant is under the Big Dipper. There are supposed to be a lot of action this year. The peak only lasts a few hours. Last year, Peter Jenniskens from the NASA Ames Research Center may have found the source of the meteor shower. It is thought to come from an asteriod left over from a comet.
