Looking around i am seeing a lot of diversely peculiar nicknames...where did people get their nicknames from?

Example mine: damienpaul is just a composite of the firdt two given names,,,can you guess what they are? <_<

"Mad Pauline"? I don't think pretending to be a different gender is really on.

Seriously though, I just spent a while thinking of names related to Astronomy, then resisted the urge to use one of the really silly ones ("Mary Imbrium", "Ursula Major" etc). I previously spent a couple of years failing to make computer music so I used a 70s rock star type of name, "Floyd Autobahn", but there are other people on the Web using "Floyd" and on an Astronomy site it brings "Dark Side of the Moon" to mind, which I never liked.

Chook

"Alice" (aka damianpaul) is from Alice Springs - smack bang in the middle of Australia.

"Red Rooster" (aka chook) because surname is FOWLER.

I'm *almost* embarrassed to tell you, but it's not a secret among those who know me...

8 years ago I put in a personal ad - partly as a joke, partly seriously - which read "New age dude seeks dippy hippy for love and peace"

(Hey, it worked :D I met my previous fiance that way... then I found out she was a weirdo. Oh well.)

I always liked the name so whenever I have to register a name anywhere, I always use that one.

In case you're wondering, I didn't make a habit of placing personal ads and my current fiancee is only my second LOL (It took me 7 years to get over the last one!!!)

Heh .. I've been reading it as Dippy Happy all this time. oops. Sorry mate. Mine has a very interesting story behind it. It's my ... wait for it .. name.

Tycho is just my real name, as the astromer Tycho Brahe
(1546-1601). There is a crater on the moon named Tycho too.

I think mine speaks for itself! :)

I´m mad on space! My father used to say I walked around with my head in the clouds when I was a kid- he got it wrong - it was in space!

I registered using my real name. But I often register as DrBingle. My first initials are D. R. and the last name is of course Bing...... Always wanted to be a Doctor in some scientific field but never made the grade. Lost out on that in high school due to lack of support of anyone who thought I could be anything but average.

Man... Your profile shows that you were in the Navy for 22 year. You did something cool with your life there. Take a step back and look at the whole picture buddy and try not to be so hard on your self ;) ....

I agree with JimN, 22 years in the navy - you would have an awful lot mor experience than many like me who have the alphabet after their name. I'd be interested to know more of your career.

I tell the story of The Meal here (http://www.the-meal.net/content.html). It's sort of complicated...and I should update the end of that blurb. I ended up meeting my wife online. :P

Polarbeast

I started off in the good old days of Bulletin Board Services (BBS) as Polar Bear, and then the Internet came. There were too many Polar Bears to count, so I did some rapid concatenating and restructuring and came up with Polarbeast.

Which no one else seems to use to this day... except for when I tried to get on AOL Instant Messenger with it and discovered some lady in Orange County, California had taken it. Therefore, I hate her and, um, she's dumb and stupid.

Graceless

My nickname is the result of tragic irony and lots of casualty visits. I'm a former dancer, and while I manage to not stumble over my feet while performing....I am known for some amazing stunts that prove my lack of hand-eye coordination (falling off cliffs and the like).

damienpaul
01-February-2004, 04:48 AM
Ah yes, i am very similar, I am partly paralysed in left side from such a fall off a cliff. How is that a walking stick at 27 years old!

Planetwatcher

I can't say I came up with my handle at the spur of the moment. I noticed that a few of the members at the time (when the forums first started) used nicknames that I thought sounded sharp. Such as Dippy Hippy, Arrmon, and Kashi.
I milled around with several steller names, but nothing seemed right.

But even more interesting was the avatars. This was my first time in seeing them. I figured the avatar is what will stick out, and be remembered the most, so I wanted to pick one which was fitting.

I remembered some planetscape artist entries on Desktop Starships, http://www.desktopstarships.com/index.html many of which I thought was really cool. It was a difficult choice between Jennifer's Dream, an alien planetscape with domed cities and a couple funky planets in the background,
and the 5th Moon, presumibly a hypothentical view from Saturn's 5th largest moon Enceldius. I decided on the latter, and sent it to Fraser.

If you blow up the avatar to full size, there are two figures in spacesuits holding hands. Both are looking on upward, and the taller figure is waving. They are the planet watchers, hence my handle Planetwatcher.

I suppose every nick name has a story. Well that is mine.

eggplant

I used my primary net name on my avatar, toddoldb1, combo my name, Todd, and the O L D B 1 came from two places, Obewan,ol'b1 but really I was going to start a business doing off line back up services for small businesses, so Off Line Data Bank #1=OLDB1,
Eggplant is another issue altogether,
My High School garage band was/is to this day, (23 years running) the eggplant society, (google search it) ipso facto, Eggplant
He's real big,
but he's not mean,
a whole lotta purple
and a little green,
Egggggg---Plannnnnt...
Eggplanet is also acceptable :P
aka eggy, eggster, just send money...

Planetwatcher, thanks for the link... they have some stunning artwork there!! Time to download some more desktop wallpaper!! Wahey! :D

Dippy, if you come up with a new avatar in the near future, we'll know where it came from.

Between Desktop Starships and other sites it led me to, I've seen some of the coolest looking planetscapes, and space ship designs.
They even have a link to a forum, which I tried and couldn't seem to get on.
I found out later it was because their site will not allow access to Netscape users.
Even though I use Explorer now mostly, I felt any forum which is that prissy isn't one I want to be involved with.

Ever come across a weaselbunny, cos I think we're a rare breed?!

Eggplant, you got any mp3's up on the net for us to link to? I want to hear some "EGGPLANT SOCIETY"!!!

(Are you suggesting humans are "eggplants"?? Hmm, appropriate analogy, actually!)

Josh, I think we're the odd ones out. :o

I used my name, partly because this is the first forum where 'matthew' wasn't taken, and I was too lazy to do something creative.

Matthew and Josh - truely anomaolous like the orbit of Venus and triton - i'll let you two work out which is which

Tinaa

Mine is a tough one too. First name Tina, last name starts with an A...Tinaa

MikeJ
06-February-2004, 07:44 PM
this time I'm not using any nickname - same explanation as Tinaa. I could tell you some of my online aka's, but then I'd have to kill you, or send a virus or something, not that I would, so I won't....

... but I use transforms like: Fred Blackwood --> Black Fredwood --> Schwartz Friedrichswald --> SciFi Wally........ etc etc etc until it sounds appropriate
