Don't get me wrong but I like the space scene to. But yes I'm into monster type PCs built for gamers like the one I have. Going to upgrade again after I get my income tax check this month. Going to blow at the most a $1000 on the upgrade. I have online friend that are waiting to on line game with me. I'm more into the Ghost recon scene. I have lots of other games to. I plan on getting Morrowind which comes with Blood stone for PC next week. Combo pack. I also have an XBox. I sold my PS2. I wonder why  . I also work night atwww.heb.com (http://www.heb.com). I have been work nights there for seven years straight. I run a stock crew. So other word on my days off you can catch me online any hour during the night. I do not see sun light past noon most of the time. I gave my daytime life away a long time ago. Plus after I get my upgade done I will hook up my DSL Yahoo. I'm allready paying for it for a few week now and still did not hook it up. So anyway let me know what kind of Of PC setup you have. I like knowing what other people have. Maybe we can share tips in the future about PC stuff. But ya. That game your playing looks good. I seen it before. I also like Mars  .[FONT=Impact]

JimN -I recently upgrade to a P4 3 Ghz 800FSB with 1 Gig Dual Channel DDR Ram - I used DFI's Lanparty PRO875B motherboard I have to 80Gig SATA hard drives configured as RAID 1.5 and for this PC I used the ATI All-IN-WONDER 9600 with 128MB Ram.(I was going to use the 9800 but I wanted to spend the extra money on the CPU instead) Im not really playing many games lately but for I while I was completely addicted to Dark Age Of Camelot - and before that EA's Earth and Beyond. At one point in time I needed some extra cash so I built and sold some very high end gaming systems on Ebay - I still have access to all the parts wholesale so when it comes time to upgrade I can still get the parts at very good prices and usually before they are available in stores here in Canada.

Cool  . I have my eyes set on the Radeon 9800XT. I'm not sure what else I will need yet to get the most out out of that video card for my PC. If you e mail me at gabbyjames2003@yahoo.com I will send you my PC stats and maybe you can tell me what I'll be looking at. I'd rather e mail the page to you. To much to type here.

Today after I cashed my paycheck I ran on over to WalMart and bought Marrowind The Elder Scrolls III for $30.00. It came with Tribunal and Bloodmoon. The forth CD was a Elders Scroll Constuction Set. This was a awsome deal. You should check out a WalMart close to you if you like these kinds of games. Most WalMarts carry the same stuff. I should know. The store I work for keeps track of them all the time. www.heb.com (http://www.heb.com).

Update...
Today I stopped by Radio Shack and talked to the main man that works on PCs. I told him all the feed back about my PC working Radeon 9800XT at its best. He said after looking at my PC the first time I bought it up there to get my CD ROM drive looked at the most extra stuff I might need to get would be some more memory and a new drive of course. But until I bring it up there when the time comes to give it a make over thats all he can tell me. But not to worry about it. Lets hope  .
If I have to I will go for the Radeon 9800 Pro.

Hey Weaselbunny - love the name!!! :D
I love movies and music... I have a humungous collection of CD's and DVD's that I'm currently flogging on Ebay because I can't take them with me to the US... and at the moment, that eats up a lot of my time. I'm not kidding... I'm ripping my CD's to MP3 so I can store 'em on my iPod and then selling the originals.
Other than that, I'm busy clearing out my house and if I've worked *really* hard, you might find me down the pub with a pint of Guinness :D

My wife has to have here music close at hand. On my XBox between me and her we have so far stored up to 108 full music CDs. Theres mostly metal, rap and mexican music on it. She uses the XBox more than the sterio. The XBox is hooked up to my Sony Trinitron Waga 32". The sound from that kind of a TV sounds better than what the sterio puts out. But ya.. It trips me out how much music the XBox can hold. I have not seen any sigh of a limit to it yet. Still storing more music with no problems.

Gotta love the ripping... I recently purchased my first dvd burner, oooo, nice!
I have a PS2, considered the X-Box but couldn't get to grips with the controller, they say size doesn't matter but in this case it's just too much of a beast.
As for moving, I've moved 7 times in the last year and a half, not to mention helping friends move. The worst of it is, although I'm always moving myself or other people, I'm just not psychologically equiped to deal with it. Hate packing, nearly drives me to meltdown point!!! :(
So good luck with your trans-atlantic relocation Mr Dippyhippy! (Guinness... good call, good for the blood!)

Hey guys :D . That sound all cool to me. Hmmm. Movie people. We rent and buy(The good ones) all the time. Maybe you can give me some feed back about this. Some guy at another forum told me you can play DVD on a CD ROM and get into the DVD PC features. I thought you would have to have a DVD ROM drive for that. I wanted one when I had my PC built last income tax but the guy that built it over looked in on the list of stuff I gave him to put in my PC. I got over anyways. But is this true  ?

What kind of RPGs are you guys playing. I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons since the age of 6 on and off. I still have some of the first edition stuff that came out for that game. I'm 34 now. Saving it for my son for when he gets old enough to take care of them. Plus my huge comic collection under plastic and lots of action figures still in there packages or boxes. Well..... I like playing guitar, birdwatching, pro sports(N.Y. Islanders, Giants, Yankees), prog-rock, fishing, observing EVERYTHING, collecting beach-glass on the north shore of Long Island, learning more about science and astronomy, airplanes, concerts, The Simpsons, mmmmmmmm.......beer, and contemplating the universe. I guess I'm kinda boring from the outside, but I would'nt have it any other way. ;)

I have always been fasenated with electronic gadget, especially radios and computers.
For many years I was an advid Citizens Band radio operator, (that was how I met my wife. Her slogan was, 'Sex is a mistermeaner. The more I miss, the meaner I get.' So I had to check her out) ;)
At one time I owned a dozen computers. I'm down to just 4 now. B)
Also, I'm politically active. Recently I was made a deligete to my political parties county convention. From there I could advance to state, and possibley national conventions.
I also like writing. Although my spelling and grammer is not so good, and Donna disagrees with how good I really am at it.
I used to enjoy raising tropical fish, until we ran out of room for aquariums, and Donna made me get rid of them.
We watch a lot of VCR and DVD movies. Proabley way too many.
So I guess that makes me a couch potato. :P

I used to have fish. I bread cichlids for a while, but they were boring, they just hid under rocks or swam away from poppa fish, who had a bit of an attitude problem! Plus the tank was huge and it nearly killed me cleaning it out! In the end I sold the lot and bought a new exhaust pipe for my bike.
I did have a little tank with lots of colourful little fish, but I gave that to my nephew.
Actually I need some advice from you guys. I want to back up my DVD's but need to get some software. I need something for ripping and something for compressing. Could anyone recommend some software, the cheaper the better, January has been a very long month!
I've been doing CD's and that's all good.

Weasel, I can't help you there because I have a stand-alone DVD Recorder / Player... and yes, January has been a *very* long month... I just got paid and I can tell you, I breathed a big sigh of relief ;)
I like the Simpsons too... fave quote, from Homer (and yes, I've used this in real life... saaaaaaaaad) "Just because I don't care it doesn't mean I don't understand"

I used to have fish. I bread cichlids for a while, but they were boring, they just hid under rocks or swam away from poppa fish, who had a bit of an attitude problem! Plus the tank was huge and it nearly killed me cleaning it out!
When I first met and was dating the woman I eventually married, she always had a couple 10 gal tanks with simular type fishes which were as boring.
She used to bring home feeder guppies from time to time for them to eat.
One day their were a couple fantail and dragon guppies in with the feeders she brought home. That sparked an interest in live bearing fish.
When she saw my interest, she traded what she had for a varitiy of fishes for comunity tanks, which included prettier guppies, platties, and a couple others. She always included some scavenger type fishes, which kept the tank pretty clean, and never allowed snails. Between that, and keeping a good undergravel filter system, we never cleaned a particular tank more then once every few months.
After that I began building my own aquariums, and after reading up, took her best guppies for breeding.
At the time I worked in a plastics molding factory which produced componets for refrigerators. I found that by gluing together two transparent ice cube pans from those rejected, I would have a 4 1/2 gal. tank. Perfect size for breeding small fishes. They also work well for breeding brine shrimp which is one of the best types of food for livebearing tropical fish. Best of all, because of the size and shape of the tank, I could fit six breeder tanks in the space of one ten gal. tank.
I could build all the breeder tanks I wanted, and all it cost me was the glue, screws, nuts, and an ocasional drill bit.
I used rejected transparent refrigerator light bulb shields as a birthing box so that momma would not eat her offspring.
I was breeding red dragon guppies with yellow and black fantails, and came up with orange guppies with black spotted delta shaped tail fins.
My new hobby became self sustaining in six months, because I traded my guppies with a local pet store for other supplies.
By the end of the first year, I had two dozen tanks of guppies going, and up to five more tanks of brine shrimp.
I entered my prettiest half dozen in a local contest, and won a prize for the most unusual tank. Others wanted me to build them tanks as well.
I must have built and sold 50 before my employer made me stop because I was making money off of company products which constituted conflict of interest.
Besides, I was beginning to drive my wife nuts. Oh she was happy that I brought in a little extra money, and that we went over three years without buying any dog food for our dogs because of my trading.
But she felt it was an obsession because by then I had a 40 gallon tank, two 30 gallon tanks, three 20 gallon tanks, three ten gallon tanks, and 30 of those tanks that I built. I had also expanded into breeding mollies, platties, swordtails, halfbeaks, and mosqueto fish. I told her it wasn't an obsession, but a business.
But she gave me the ultimatium, either quit my job and open a shop, or get rid of all the fishes and aquariums. So that ended my enterprise of tropical fish.

So, with all those tanks in your home... where did you live!
My little tank had loads of guppies... they were originally purchased to make sure the water was ready in the big tank before the cichlids went in and they were going to get eaten (my ex set up the tank for me), but I'd already given one a name, Randy, cos all he did was harass the lady guppies.
I couldn't bear to see them get eaten so I went on a mission to save the guppies and got the small tank.
Sad... yes, pathetic... maybe, proud of it... of course I am!

Writing is my hobby and also my profession, so I get to do my hobby all week and get paid for it. I'm also working on a book of poetry outside work hours so I'm keeping fingers crossed that I can get that published. I won some competitions as a teenager and was told I should get my stuff published but I never got round to it. Now at the ripe old age of 25 I'm finally pulling me finger out!
As for photography, I did an A-Level in that. I'm looking forward to the day that I can afford a darkroom of my own, very therapeutic.
I'll check out your poems though and well done, good on yer lad!

All poetry is good Damian, i am of the belief that no one can claim that their poems are better than anothers, cause like things like our favourite planet and moon in Planetwatchers thread - they are individual.
I agree sitting outside watching sky is very relaxing, i have many opportunities to do this here in Alice Springs, particularly on weekends.
I wonder if anyone has dones any astronomy poetry??
Weaselbunny
27-January-2004, 05:08 PM
I've written poems about the stars and space, but more about how awe-inspiring it is than anything technical.
And I'm with you DamienPaul. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, poetry is totally personal, what floats one person's boat can sink someone else's!
It's more important that you express yourself, no matter what the form or proficiency.
If you can exploit it for money... so much the better (I would just like to state at this point that I am not some crazed meglomaniac!).

I used to write the monthly Webweaver Picks (website / software reviews) for Astronomy magazine... for 1,000 words a month, that was a nice little earner :)
...and... I'm gonna be on the telly!!! Woohoo!!! Nothing astronomy related... here in the UK, there's a show called Cash In Your Attic... the people who made that are making a sister show called Car Booty and I'm going to be on that :)
They're filming on the weekend of Feb 28th & 29th... to cut a long story short, I (and my parents) have to sell our collectable items (ie, my old toys and records) at a car boot sale (like a tailgate party but selling out of the trunk - ie, "boot", hence the title 'car booty' - of your car) with the aim of raising enough lolly to buy something we (ie, me) really want (ie, a tuxedo or something else for my impending wedding)
I wouldn't have minded putting the money towards decorating my house or towards another flight to the US, but they want to film us using the money afterwards... and obviously filming me making a booking with American Airlines online isn't very exciting LOL

I´m more into surfing the Internet in search of ever more photos of our marvellous universe. I collect them & store them like a squirrel does with nuts in the autumn - only I remember exactly where I have put them (or should I say, XP does!)
I´ve always had an interest in the stars & the universe. Before I had access to the Internet it was more confined to reading books from the library or in the newspapers (I used to collect cutouts from the papers, but they are not nearly as convenient as saving them on the computer & later burning them to CD´s).
I have spent most of my years reading Science Fiction books but I have always had a great interest in "real" science. I have most of the books that Isaac Asimov wrote & have had collections in English & Spanish (I´m fluent in Spanish having lived in Spain more than 20 years & having a Spanish wife).
I subscribe to numerous newsletters (other than UT) both in English & Spanish. These take up a good deal of my time when I am not working.
I am also very keen on gardening (but I must admit I´m rather a fair weather gardener). I live in a block on flats, on the ground floor, & we have a balcony that is a little wider than those above us & I fill the balcony to overflowing in the summer! People are always making comments about how nice it looks & how it benefits the block! :)
I may have my head in the skies, as my father used to say, but I have my hands in the soil - when I can get them away from the computer! :)

Yeah, I forgot about storm watching, now your talking about an awsome, but dangerous beauty. Considering I live in the northern half of Tornado Alley, we get about a hunderd of those things each year. Only seen a couple or three myself.
I used to be on a volunteer fire department, and storm watch was one of our duties.

Although tornadoes are infrequently repported in Australia, I have been close to a few in western Australia, particularly close to one that came close to a mining living quarters block where i was staying... But I have seen some ripper waterspouts all over the coast!

Storm watching in the UK would be a bit pointless! Seeing as we alternate between rain and fog. ;)
When I was at uni though, the campus was on the side of a valley and I was in halls of residence. Every now and again we would have a cracking thunder-storm. So a couple of friends and myself would go and sit on the side of the valley, watch the lightening, get soaking wet through and then trudge down to the bar to drip rainwater everywhere! :P
(The valley thing also came in handy on Fireworks night, it was mainly rural but there were towns and villages stretching out into the distance.)

My most time consuming hobby is playing chess (http://www.tim-thompson.com/chess.html). I've managed to be reasonably successful as a competitor, winning a few club championships, and a few tournament prizes. But, for the most part, tournament competition is becoming more stressful than it once was (or maybe I am becoming too old & weak). Still, I have always found chess, and similar strategic board games (I also play shogi, Xiangqi & go), to be quite interesting as logic puzzles, and usually more enjoyable to play than not.
I have also spent a great deal of time on amateur astronomy. I was on the board of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society (http://www.laas.org/) for 16 years (President for 9 of those years), and I am still on the board of the Mt. Wilson Observatory Association (http://www.mwoa.org/) after 19 years. Along those lines I've developed the hobby of public speaking, having talked to a few amateur astronomy clubs, and several schools.
That's where most of my time goes. Oddly enough, I find reading about war to be most relaxing (is that weird?). I am a fan of military history (http://www.defenselink.mil/other_info/history.html), partly because of my attachment to strategic, "war like" board games, but mostly due to growing up in the shadow of WWII (http://www.archives.gov/exhibit_hall/a_people_at_war/a_people_at_war.html), which most of the younger people cannot remember. I've done a lot of informal study of the U.S. Civil War (http://www.cwc.lsu.edu/) especially.
My brain won't let me relax for real, so I'm "fidgity", I can't just sit & watch TV, for instance, without having something else to do (it's not like TV is famous for working your brain anyway).
When I was in high school I ran on the cross country team, but usually finished somewhere in the rear. I don't do anything like that any more, although I do still like to hike around in the open when I can.

I suppose in real life, most of it revolves around family and kids (2 boys). The older one is a goalie in hockey (please don't call it ice hockey) and the younger one is jsut 3 so we'll get him on skates next year.
Salesman in real life...with a keen interest in bigger topics. Yes salesmen do care about something other than comissions and clients.
Enjoy bike riding in the summer, curling and hockey in the winter, though I don't do either particularly well. Thank god for the internet. I used to have stacks of magazines on my floor that I just couldn't get rid of, but with so much information on line, my life has gotten much less cluttered in the past 5-6 years.
And since I am in Canada, I do enjoy saying 'Eh' at the end of every other sentence. :P

Actually I need some advice from you guys. I want to back up my DVD's but need to get some software. I need something for ripping and something for compressing. Could anyone recommend some software, the cheaper the better
Hi Weaselbunny, I just noticed this...! Have you already solved it?
I use DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com) for simple 1:1 single-layer copies... And I use DVD Shrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org) for compressing a dual-layer DVD to fit a blank single-layer disk.
These are both FREEWARE (yeah!!! great concept!!!) and are highly regarded among the DVD forums. They are easy to install & are perfectly "safe". I've been keeping up with the latest beta releases etc and both these programs just get better & better, rivalling (if not surpassing) commercial software worth hundreds of dollars!!!
As you can see, yes my hobby these days is video editing, DVD authoring, transferring VHS to DVD, etc... I'm hoping to buy a digital camcorder soon! I have the script, the actors & actresses, the rubber latex monsters, ha ha, the only thing holding me back is the bloody camera! :P

I've got a Philips DVDR80 DVD Player / Recorder and that does the job for me... have put all my camcorder home movies on there and am halfway through transferring some VHS tapes too... I have a cracking pair of programmes about Voyager, broadcast in 1990, on VHS that I've now transferred to DVD for prosterity :D

First and foremost, other than stars and planets, is Geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com)! I am also very active in my state's org (http://www.mi-geocaching.org). ASide from that, I enjoy writing code, and anything else outdoors; camping, Scouts, kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving, etc. And the more activities we get to do with our WonderDog, the better. We actually LOVE being "empty nester's", heheheh.... Also doing quite a bit of remodeling, and enjoy being semi retierd in my mid 40's! B)
