View Full Version : Temperature vs. Taste

Okay, here's one for y'all....
Here on the nightshift things can get pretty quiet at around 3 in the morning. To relieve the monotony, we often argue about who's turn it is to make the tea and coffee...
Anyway, I take my time drinking my coffee and will often finish off a cup that's stone cold... that, to my colleague's disgust, doesn't bother me at all....
...but...
...it did lead to an intereting debate (well, interesting in terms of it being 3 in the morning) because I'm sure I read somewhere that someone had spent thousands of pounds / dollars of taxpayers money investigating whether the temperature of a drink affects it's taste...
...and I was certain that it did... others weren't so convinced...

whether the temperature of a drink affects it's taste...
Why, certainly it does. A warm beer sure ain't no cold beer!!!

A sun-heated hot pepsi is no cup of tea either (pardon the pun)

I drink cold coffee too. Eat cold pizza. Drink warm soda pop. Of course, I can eat a bowl of cereal for supper and be happy as can be. My family isn't too crazy about it though. ;) There are days they feel lucky to get that. Yes, I am a terrible mother. There is always the miracle applicance...the microwave. Where would we be without the microwave?

Yes, definately a difference in taste. hot pizza is much better, though cold pizza doesn't suck....ice cold beer is better with hot boiled crayfish, cold crayfish with hot beer would suck, I could go on and on...........
Alligator sauce picante has to be hot, luke warm at least, cold would not do!

The worst tasting coffee I've ever tasted: coffee that has gone cold on the bedside table after someone has kindly brought it to me to wake me up - and then I've fallen asleep again.... it's foul, but you have to drink it

LOL I find it interesting... I'm especially curious about the whole cold beer thing... isn't that simply a case of preference than taste? You can't tell me a nice cold brewski out of the fridge tastes different from one that was poured half an hour ago... it might *be* better because it's cold, but surely it doesn't *taste* better?

As an Australian, in Australia, I find that our COLD beer fills me to the gills after two schooners.
As an Australian, in England, I used to really enjoy the British room-temperature (WARM?) beer because you could drink it all day/night - and still drink some more.
As to the original question - yes, temperature really does effect taste.

Christ, I knew someone would bring that up....
For the record, we serve lagers, eg Fosters, Stella, Heineken (blurgh), Castlemaine XXXX etc, *cold*
Dark beers (draught Guinness excepted) and bitters are *meant* to be served at room temperature because the idea of a cold bitter is just as freaky as having a warm beer.
Actually, that's the single one thing I absolutely *hate* about going into a bar in the US - every clown thinks he's the first person to tell me how the English like their beer warm. 99% of those clowns haven't even left the country.

Excuse me!?
My two years in Britain were two of the happiest years of my life (which is beside the point) - but I stated:
"As an Australian, in England, I used to really enjoy the British room-temperature (WARM?) beer."
So what the hell are you going on about?
I'll repeat - "I enjoy the British room-temperature (WARMJ) beer" (as apposed to the Australian freezing cold frothy beer).
And I RESENT your "99% of those clowns haven't even left the country." addressed either to myself or Americans.

Well Chook, if you read my post again, you'll see that I wasn't referring to Australians - or, therefore, you personally- at all, but I stand by my remark because it's my personal experience. In my experience, most of the Americans who go around saying that the English only serve warm beer haven't even been to England. I'm not saying it to be offensive but in this case this IS my experience. You should hear some of the other things I've heard people say about the English that is blatant BS - and don't get me wrong, I've corrected the English about their attitudes too.

Hey guys, we're all clowns here...and warm beer sucks! Ha...

Ah Tiny, I could wax lyrical about the glorious, refreshing splendour of the gods' amber ELIXIR!!! But I won't, because I don't want to encourage under-age drinking.
Humanity discovered how to make beer at practically DAY ONE of its appearance upon the Earth. Now that's monkey ingenuity at its finest!!! ;)

I will forever remember my first post here on a space/science forum.
The taste of beer, being warm or cold, depends on whether or not it was free or paid for. :D
Cold coffee... warm cola... I don't care either way all that much. If I'm thirsty tho, it must be wet...... all that counts.
Ideally, cool beer and cola, and warm, not hot coffee.

Oh Tiny... just wait till you're older and can enjoy an ice cold beer with some well seasoned, boiled crayfish with potatoes, on a hot day, and then another beer, and some more crayfish, etc.

Ha, yes, well... This IS "Totally Off Topic"!!??
Nothing goes better with a COLD beer than a WARM pizza (not to hot or it burns the roof of your mouth)...

Traditionally beer was brewed because the water was not safe to drink otherwise.
Call me a Luddite if you like, but I don't trust this new fangled water.... hic

Jimmy, stoppit!!! All this talk of cold beer AND seafood is making me both thirsty and hungry...
Mike, yeah, I seem to remember hearing that someplace before... and what you said about water reminds me of what I said when someone told me I should drink more water... I replied that I drink plenty of coffee, which is (obviously) almost completely hot water... but apparently it's not the same...
