My cousin asked me to help her out with her science fair project on Astronomy. The only problem is that you need to have some type of hypothesis that can be proven through an experiment. Any ideas?

Try to prove what would happen if another star passed through our solar system, or any of the other number of ideas listed on the site.

Hi, There!

How about an experiment with light waves and spectra? Your hypothesis could be how different light sources behave when passed through different mediums...

For example, would the spectra of a flourescent tube change if a colored filter was introduced between the spectral grating and the eye? Would it change if passed through... say... water?

How does this tie in with astronomy? We study the stars through their spectra! By introducing different mediums to your controlled light source, you can show how astronomer's can positively identify stars ages and compositions through their "rainbow bar code" spectral signature.

If you are interested, I can tell you how to build a spectrometer with ordinary household things and provide you with a diffraction grating. I also have many wonderful links and can let you into some experiments that I've done on my own.

At your service,

~T
