As a newbie here. I decided to say hello to the group and try out the "my controls" feature to enter my name and a "signature".
I am greeted with a fine howdy do like this:
================================================
"For obvious reasons I'm closing this wildly interesting and insightful thread.
People ... when someone posts this sort of thing can we perhaps discourage them by not posting in the thread, especially with equally as riveting replies. If you do feel the need to reply to such threads then make it something that encourages intelligent posting. Thanks, thanks. "
================================================
Excuse me now while I go make a reply in the more "intelligent" two page long topic "If giant apes invaded the earth" topic.
If everyone here is from JPL, I guess I have come to the wrong place.

Agreed, Mr Fogged In. Forums should be for INFORMATION...and FUN... Otherwise why a forum? We could all just sit alone & read our textbooks...

Hey Fogged In, welcome to the forum!
I think Josh's point in the previous thread was the fact that you've clearly got your Universe Today forum legs now. Feel free to get involved in various conversations.
We do have people from JPL here, just not everyone from JPL.

Also, Josh was making the point that topics should be places where everyone can post and join in... starting a topic just to see if you can post something doesn't quite fall into that category. You need to post something a bit more interesting than just "Hello out there" and then posting three replies to yourself within the next 15 minutes.
Think of something you'd like to talk about and then pick an appropriate forum to start it. I'm sure people will soon reply :)

Hi fogged in. Firstly, the reasons Dippy gave are exactly why I closed the thread. It looked very much like flooding and while it was in the totally off topic section, it didn't seem to have a topic at all.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the site from now on and now that you've got the art of posting sorted there won't be any need for me to further misinterpret your motives.
So yeah, welcome and see you round.

If the post times had been checked, you would have noticed that after he had been answered, he stopped posting. Come on, lighten up!

Please don't encourage bad posting habits. While everyone needs the time to adjust to each forum and the users, and everyone understands that, we need to foster a more productive atmosphere. Whinging about it does not help.
Welcome to the forums fogged in, I'm sure you'll enjoy it :)

Nobody is encouraging bad posting habits; but we shouldn't scare away newcomers simply because they don't know how to use the site!

I think posting 4 times in the same place within 15 minutes is adequate proof, if any is needed, that the person knows how to use the site!

If that is so, then pardon my ignorance! It seemed to me that this person was looking for a response to verify that he was indeed posting to the forum.

Thanks for that Jimmy, you hit the nail on the head.
Every site has a different way or different options to edit or to add a signature, or other stuff. I figure that this would be the best plave to test my skills at posting.
My first post was hello.
Well, that worked out OK.
My second was to see if I added my signature correctly.
That worked too.
My third was to add my location.
Wow, 3 in a row... I thought I was doing good.
I guess somehow I looked like a spammer.
I figured I should forewarn everyone by using the post title that I did. I wanted y'all know that I was just testing what I was doing here, but I guess I should have gone into a whole lot more detail so I wouldn't get misunderstood.

If you have a problem with a mod and/or the rules you could pm a mod. It might be just a misunderstanding.

Not being a moderator, I wouldn't understand all the reasons they do what they do, or "see" what they see in a persons post. A spoken word is much easier to understand that typing.
We came to an understanding when the moderators asked me to come along with them on their annual wild Alaskan weekend of beer and fishing............so all is cool now. :D
The moderators can delete or lock this post if they want, so it doesn't keep coming up.

Why wasn't I invited?

Faulkner, you must know by now that women don't need laws or rules or any other kind of regular pattern of behaviour LOL  They are a law unto themselves!!

I have been disinvited for next year......................... I guess I wasn't supposed to tell anyone about it.
........... something to do with site donations and tax exempt status I think.

Nah, the only criteria for coming on the weekend is the amount of booze you can bring!

Nahhhh, Spiny Norman is best. Especially since he liked to hide out at the hangers at Luton Airport.
Since I'm the only member of my family who *hasn't* worked at Luton Airport, can I just go on record as saying there are *no* giant hedgehogs hiding there :P
