Just wondering... what is everyone's favorite movie?

galaxygirl
17-February-2004, 05:51 PM
... and TV show...

I like a lot of science fiction movies... My favorite TV shows are Star Trek(any series) and Stargate SG-1.

Favourite movie is still Blade Runner although I also love Lord Of The Rings - although Return Of The King is the best one, I think I like the Fellowship best.

The Empire Strikes Back is still my favourite (and the best) of the Star Wars movies and I think I'm still the only person who thinks Phantom Menace is alright and better than Return Of The Jedi... sorry, but I have a really hard time believing that some short-arsed teddy bears can overthrow a galactic empire armed only with sticks and stones. (Even with the help of a few friendly rebels)

Can't wait for Ep III...

Fave TV... hmmm... probably West Wing... it used to be NBC's Ed but that's gone downhill over the past few seasons and it's finished now anyway. I also like a few comedies from here in England, specifically Spaced (superb!!) and The League Of Gentlemen (although, again, the last series was a bit "hmmmmmmmm")

I like Frasier too... used to love Cheers... used to like X-Files and Friends too but after the first couple of seasons of those two, they both got silly and that's when I stopped watching. I'm watching the last season of Friends though, just to see how it ends :)

I like Lord of the Rings and West Wing too, but I've never really seen Friends...

I love the movie Stripes. I guess it was so funny because I saw it on post at a military base in Germany (1981). I also like Star Trek IV, I think it was called The Journey Home. It is the one where they rescue the whales. I still howl with laughter watching Kirk and Spock curse in 1980's language "double damn on you". I still watch any Star Trek show on. I love Worf, think Captains Picard and Archer sexy, and well, I wish I could be there. Otherwise, we tend to watch the Discovery channels, especially the Science channel on Tues. night. It is Cosmic Connection, all about space.

galaxygirl
18-February-2004, 01:16 AM
I don't get the Science Channel :( but I have seen Cosmic Connection at a friends house and it was really good. As for Star Trek characters, I think that Trip and Malcolm are hot! I also like Daniel Jackson from Stargate SG-1. :D

All good stuff!

Dogma is a great film and one of my favourites.

TV wise, a new series has started over here in Blighty! It's called 'Shameless' and it's centred around a typical family in a Manchester housing estate. It's really funny / realistic / thought provoking / shocking and there's no holds barred!

What did you guys thing to the film Galaxy Quest? Because I thought it was cracking!

galaxygirl
18-February-2004, 05:09 PM
Yeah, I thought that Galaxy Quest was pretty funny.

DippyHippy
18-February-2004, 10:25 PM
Weasel, you're a gal after my own heart LOL!!!

Dogma was genius. Having been to Milwaukee Airport several times, I found that scenario particularly funny but I can honestly say that if I were to banish anyone to an airport anywhere, top of my list would be Chicago O'Hare *ugh*

"Shameless" is brilliant. I recorded last night's ep cos I was working and haven't seen it yet but it's got everything... and even though if I were their neighbours I would probably curse and swear about them, when you watch them on TV and see their lives you can't help lovin' them LOL Kev (?) - the guy who married the blonde girl in a sham ceremony - is a top bloke. He should have his own series LOL

Galaxy Quest was great too - a thoroughly decent rip into Star Trek and long overdue LOL I was beginning to think that Star Trek was so revered in the US that film studios were afraid to parody it for fear of a huge public backlash LOL

And I've known people like her!

I love how TV shows and films sometimes get characters so spot on, I guess that's the mark of a good writer coupled with good actors.

By the way, is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen worth renting. I never believe film reviews because the reviewers don't generally share my tastes. What's your take Dips, have you seen it?

(Never seen Pearl Harbour, not into war films unless they're sci-fi ones)

DippyHippy
20-February-2004, 12:39 AM
Didn't see it Weasel, although my future stepson wants to because it's about superheroes LOL

Speaking of leagues of gentlemen... something tells me you like The League Of Gentlemen on the Beeb... he he he... I work in a call centre and took a call from someone who wanted to go to Hadfield, where they filmed that... I nearly asked if they were local but thought better of it...

I liked Keeping Up Appearances at first... but they just regurgitated the same jokes (like 'Allo 'Allo) so I soon got bored...

RE Sci-fi war movies... I take it Starship Troopers is in your collection then??

Lastly, who here in the UK used to watch This Life??

Favorite TV Show....

I have to admit but when re-runs of Newhart show up. I can't not watch, especially with Larry, Darrel, and Darrel.
THe show was rather on the cutting edge for the conservative late 80's and early 90's.
I also miss Happy Days.
My wife longs for Keeping Up Appearances... catches it on PBS once in a while.

Movies... Lots of favorites...

The Sting is good... so is Casino Royale.
ET Still makes me cry. :(
Can't miss with the whole StarWars thing too. :)
And I'll admit I really like the only George Lazenby Bond Movie On Her Majesties Secret Service.

My wife is telling me to add When Harry Met Sally... OK I think it has good lines too. B)

I'm not much of a movie watcher, especially the newer stuff. Movies today are a competition on special effects and lack the stories and acting of yester year. Another pet peve with newer movies is that they often throw 2 different frames per second in your face, just like todays TV commercials.
I don't have any real favorites, but one that I liked was called Never Cry Wolf. At the end, it only names a half dozen names in the credits............ because that's all the people that were in the movie.
Old war and westerns are good too. It's a Wonderful Life comes to mind too. Love anything with J J J JJimmy S S SStewart in it.

Faulkner
20-February-2004, 03:56 AM
Yes, Fogged In, I agree. My pet peeve is the stupid "reality" technique of a jerky, constantly-moving, handheld camera. Makes me sea-sick...bleurgh!

I love all the "old school" actors...the hard-drinking, brawling, womanising legends of yesteryear...No one can match 'em today! :P

DippyHippy
20-February-2004, 03:59 AM
Ah yes, you're talking about the graduates from the NYPD Blue school of cinematography... even George Lucas allowed that in Ep II *sigh*

Don't go watching the new Battlestar Galactica then LOL

Never Cry Wolf is a topper.

A couple more that come to mind are Deliverance and the Warriors. I wish I could remember the name of the female DJ who spins the tunes to the gangs and keeps telling the next group to get the Warriors.

Any help on that?

Faulkner
20-February-2004, 04:11 AM
If you liked The Warriors, you're sure to like the low-budget extravaganza "Deadbeat At Dawn" directed (and starring) Jim van Bebber (available on DVD!)...

(I can't remember that DJ having a name...?)

Peter Canuck
20-February-2004, 04:14 AM
The DJ never had a name.. But the name of the actress who did the voice?

Would I find 'Deadbeat' at Blockbuster or is to out there for them?

Peter Canuck
20-February-2004, 04:26 AM
I found her name.... Lynne Thigpen.

She passed away last year...54 according to the old CNN story.

She was also 'the Chief' on 'Where in the world is Carmen SanDiego?' on PBS for several years.

Faulkner
20-February-2004, 04:27 AM
Pete, I just checked my favourite website - www.imdb.com. The actress was Lynne Thigpen (died last year from a stroke).

You might have trouble finding "Deadbeat At Dawn" at Blockbuster, but Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305334854/qid%3D1077251110/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-8130995-3795829) has got it listed!?

Cheers...!

Some of you people have alot of favorites!

Mr. Drodo, you have 70+ films listed there. Star Wars counts as 5 movies you know. Though How I forgot the Great Escape I do not know.

What if you could only pick 3 or 4?... Can you do that? If you pick a trilogy, thats 3 movies, not just 1.

3 or 4 films plus bathroom breaks and ordering Pizza is a good day of vegging. So lets pick 3 or 4.

ET
The Sting - laugh if you must! I will too.
The Great Escape
Speed

I'm not into war films, but I agree with the Great Escape thing, not a favourite of mine but a bloody good watch (Dirty Dozen too).

I like what Eddie Izzard says about The Great Escape...

They threw in an American (Steve McQueen) to get the US audience watching it. And at the end of the film he gets away and all the British guys are lined up and shot in the head!

Hmmm... no wonder we Brits can be pessimistic at times :P

its difficult to choose just 3 or 4 from my list...its depends on what mood u r in...for a light, feel good movie

"catch me if u can" and "remember the titans" are gr8...
for more serious "life is beautiful" is a gr8 watch...not to mention forest gump will go with every mood...:)

Weaselbunny, Steve McQueen actually gets captured at the end of Great Escape and gets thrown back into the COOLER!!! ;)

Speaking of good war films...and James Coburn...you can't top Pekinpah's "Cross Of Iron"!!! :P

The Charles Bronson character escapes too. He was the tunnel digger with claustrophobia. He and one other fellow (I forget who) were the ones rowboating down the river and into a harbor at the end.
What boat they got on that could have taken them from warring nation Germany to a possible friendly shore I don't know. Maybe they jsut stowed away and stole a lifeboat when they thought they were near somewhere nice.

Weasel, I think the classic is Highlander...

They hired a *Frenchman* to play a Scot and a Scot to play a Spaniard. To make matters worse, said Scot (no disrespect to Mr Connery) plays said Spaniard with a Scottish accent.

Steve McQueen actually gets captured at the end of Great Escape

Ooopsie. Last watched it when I was about twelve, amazing what you'll forget in thirteen years! I'm just amazed that Mr Izzard got it wrong, my world is now upside down... woe... woe! :( :( (I'm a big Eddie Izzard fan).

Highlander. Cracking film! Love it. The problem is, that between the sequels there are so many contradictions... and wasn't the second one pants! I'd never thought about the 'musical accents' before <_< . And the series... oh please talk about 'like a dog with a bone'!

And good old Sean Connery, can he do any accents? I think we've had Scottish Russians, Scottish Americans..... Great actor though, so I forgive him. :P

/me tosses an oxygen tank at the dying man.... "here! breathe some of that"

My alltime favorite movie... "The Changleing" with George C. Scott and Trish Van Devere... this movie stands the test of time and will always remain the most chilling ghost story i've ever seen....

"...mmmmy rooooomm....."
also, Gladiator, ALL Lord of the Rings, and all ORIGINAL Star Wars films.... I will never condone the newer star wars films... they have done nothing more than strip the movies of their original intentions and replaced them with Woot-woot-wooting aliens and kiddy plots... only the FX were worth the $$ i dished out to see Episodes I & II... the storylines almost made me wanna walk out, and the acting.. well... shoot me over that one.

TV shows.... Enterprise (can do without the theme song in the beginning)
and King of the Hill/Simpsons/King of the Hill cartoon hour and a half.. =P

LOL NasaBoy - he prolly read the script first before he signed on the dotted line :P

Arramon, I don't mind the prequels... they're not as good as they could have been but I still enjoy them. When you look back at all five films, I think it's fair to say that the worst ones were the ones where Lucas had the most control. Things were fine with Star Wars because he wasn't a big name and he was making a labour of love project on a low budget - that proved so stressful he handed most of it over to other people for Empire (the best one) and then started sticking his beak back in for Return Of The Jedi. He hired Richard Marquand, the director, because he knew he could have his way more (and apparently he did) And what happened? Yet another Death Star (cue a good excuse to re-do the Death Star battle from the first film) and a bunch of half-arsed cute teddy bears. And I don't care what anyone says, the ewoks were crap LOL

Graceless

Oooh. It's a toss-up for the title with me. I love Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (little known fact, I laugh hysterically when the name Ruprect is said), and The Three Amigos. Maybe I have a secret and undying love for Steve Martin? I should look into that.
I'm also a huge fan of the movie Strictly Ballroom. I love the mockumentary style. Oooh. And don't forget about Men With Brooms. I love that one too.

I don't watch a lot of tv, but I do love Las Vegas. Any show with Elvis as the theme song has to rock, yeah? I am also currently addicted to Angel, but don't tell anyone, it's my secret shame. I JUST started watching it....five seasons after it started....thank goodness for the Space Channel.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, haven't seen it in years! Very funny. Speaking of Steve Martin, I recently picked up a copy of 'Parenthood'. I'd last seen it in my early teens, this time when I watched it it was funny in ways I'd never realised back then!

"Forbidden Planet" is probably THE ultimate sci-fi classic from the '50s...up there with "This Island Earth".

But JohnM..."Godzilla vs Bambi"? Yes I know the one...sheesh!...What about "Godzilla Vs Monster Zero" (aka "Invasion of the Astro-Monsters")??? Now THERE'S a ripper! :P

Juan, 'The Fountainhead' was great, wasn't it. Someone standing up for what they believed in.

I also liked a little known film, 'Koyaniskatsi' by Francis Ford Copola, subtitled "life out of balance, crazy life", beautiful music by Philip Glass and striking visuals which are constantly and crudely ripped off by advertisers today. No words in the entire film. Pretty much starts with the magnificience of the world and how we're screwing it up.

'Things to Come'...We could sure use the Gas of Peace right about now.

Got a kick out of 'The Man Who Could do Anything' by Capra...Ultimate power does corrupt absolutely.

Enjoyed 'Sleuth' with Michael Caine and SIR Olivier. Worst cinema moment in my life was when the student projectionist at the university auditorium accidently switched reel #4 and reel #2, saw the end early on and the buildup at the end. The film was ruined for my date, but killing the projectionist would only have made things worse.

'Dr. Strangelove or, How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb" YeeeHaaah, says Slim Pickins, riding the bomb down.

'FailSafe'...be careful.

and, 'The Lathe of Heaven' by Ursula K. LeGuin...be careful what you tell your shrink!

Oh Yeah...'FORBIDDEN PLANET'...Gotta Love the Id.

Ah... best give that one a miss, for now... wait till it becomes a cheapie!

I saw Big Fish a couple of weeks ago... that was cracking, took a little while to get going, but well worth it. Some people left early, I guess it's not everyone's cuppa, but everyone I know who has any sort of taste or discernment thought it was a fantastic movie, even if it wasn't their thing.

Any of you guys seen Hypercube? Saw it in Blockbusters but I was with girl friends who prefer chick flicks or something with subtitles... <_< yawn! It sounded intriguing judging by the back cover, but the sort of thing that's either absolutely cock on or a complete waste of time.

Plus... if you were a film character... who would you be? B)
