Attempting to interpret HUb'bbish is one of the most challenging and interesting of pursuits. As GrabOraft said, just have patience. It will all come in time. But you must also be aware that it's a subject so deep you will never be able to comprehend it in full. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

(BTW, it helps a little if you read his posts phonetically, rather than looking for commonly accepted spellings.)

Thank you very much. I thought he might have been copying and pasting code from something. Does he have English as a second language or something? I really wonder why so many people on the internet have trouble with speaking English. : Well, thank you again. -Colt

But in HUb's case, he's even served in the USAn military (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=2263&forum=3), apparently.

Yes, they can be difficult to understand, but they can have an almost poetic quality (very modern/minimalist, of course). Timothy Leary would have loved these posts. Give them time, and they will grow on you.

hub' are you listening? (typing?) I have a quick question: are you using a speak to type word processor? You konw like the ones where you say a sentance into it and they computer types it up. That would make sense in the jumbled words and syntax.

It can't be a text browser only as others have described because even then you can see that your coding does not work as well as you think it does. This is not a graphically based forum (well mostly not) it is all tables and javascrypt, so hub' should be able to see it as we do.

Yes, they can be difficult to understand, but they can have an almost poetic quality

Concrete poetry, indeed. And I appreciate that quality.

The problem with HUb's posts is that we never know if they are astronomy related (some definetely are not). Thus, one never can be sure whether his posts are compliant with the board's rules or not. And that seems unfair, since I myself have been questioned by BA before, both as to the authenticity and orientation of some posts of mine, even when they were

a)written in a reasonable United Nations English (like this one)and

b)clearly astronomy-oriented.

In some places of this planet this is called "two-weights-two-mesaures policy".

I, too, am baffled by Hub's mode of communique. I am equally baffled by Grapes' seeming ease with translating it. (Of course, Grapes has some internet mastery that I can't figure out either.) Maybe I am too much of a left-brained thinker to figure it all out!

OK, but this has really got me curious. The sixth post down, Grapes links to a previous thread that Hub' had posted and was doing a lot of writing on. On one of the posts, Hub' is talking about the news coverage of the D.C sniper investigation in Tacoma, and the post is dated for "2002-09-21 21:56". Huh?????

It was a reference to Lloyd Bentsen's comment in a 1988 debate with Dan Quayle: "I knew John Kennedy, John Kennedy was a friend of mine, and Senator, you're no John Kennedy," but I just googled on it and I see thirty different versions of the quote (and none of them the way I remember it), so I understand why you wouldn't recognize it.

That is why i love political debates, they are really fun. Especially when they get mean. Better than sitcoms.
I also don't remember that quote for two reasons. At the time i was out of the country. I moved from Canada to Florida in 92. Second, I am only 21, I was born in 81 and at the time i was only 7 and didn't reall have the interest in politics that i do now. But the quote does sound falimilar, but i don't remmeber whaere i heard it. robobly is some u.s. history book.

Brazilians, in general, feel a certain unease being confounded with other - Spanish speaking - Latin American nations (as, I think, Canadians don’t appreciate to be confounded with the born in the U.S. and vice-versa.).

For the sake of truth, there is no “cucaracha” song around here (that’s a Hollywood misinterpretation of the multifaceted Latin Culture). We don’t dance Rumba, or Salsa, or Tango. Brazil is a unique culture in America. It’s a Bossa Nova nation. Not that we don’t feel Latin Americans; we do, with pride, and we sincerely love all American brothers, from Alaska to Patagonia.

Man, you're a maniac. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

It's funny. I myself am (re)reading calculus lately. An excelent (oriented to economics) book by an American mathematician (woman) Jean Weber.

As to double spacing, HUb', there's nothing to it. I just do it the way I find adequate.

If my HUb'bish is any good, you (HUb') dial into a Wildcat BBS (wow! that's a blast from the past) with an internet gateway on a 386/20. After dialing in, you access the text database of this phpBB message board. The Wildcat BBS sends your text line by line.

HUb', here's a page on MacOSX freeware I just googled up. Maybe has some things you can use. http://macfreebees.tripod.com/osx.html

Remember, Google is your friend. Just type in "MacOS" "freeware" and whatever program category you want to find, and you should be able to find something. You shouldn't have to buy any program that only offers basic functions. There are doubtless plenty of free and open source alternatives out there.

HUB' try these sites:
http://www.htmlhelpcentral.com/htmlhelp.html
http://www.htmlhelp.com/
http://archive.ncsa.uiuc.edu/General/Internet/WWW/HTMLPrimerAll.html

It is good to know HTML. Much more powerfull than using a web building software.

If you don't want to learn a new language, try something like Netscape composer, IE version of the web page maker (can't rmemeber the name) or even Word will make webpages. Mac software, i don't know. But i am sure that you can do similar things with them. The really good thing about learning HTML (especially for you /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) is that it is only in text. The only time you use pics are when loading the pictures and any colours to the site.

A good HTML editor and writer is called: EMACS. It also edits other text based languages.

and here is a EMACS Tutorial:

Hope this helps!

We are having big problems with rising tuition hikes. Our govenor (the infernal Jeb! Bush) has taken away about ~$70 million from this years budget and has cut taxes for the state another $200 million (why cut both? Makes no sense to me!!). So the university is torn between riding tuition alot or cutting alot of classes. They choose both. Arrgg...

So PSU is not the only university with problems. Just because the president of the university has a degree does not mean they are smart. Heck we just past the halfway point in a new multi-million dollar addition to our stadium when summer classes that year were cut by a quarter.

I'm not sure this will work for you, but in IE you should be able to right click on the little page icon just to the left of "Posted: 01 Jul 2003 11:36" at the top of your post, and choose "Copy shortcut" from the options that drop down. That should copy the post address to the clipboard, and you can paste it elsewhere. HTH

Colt
02-July-2003, 05:22 AM
That does not seem to work actually, not for me. When I copy the shortcut like you described, Kilopi, it just takes me to the top of this particular page. What I do is just click on it, following the link, and copy the address from the address bar. -Colt

Musashi
02-July-2003, 06:17 AM
Another way to do it is this:

copy the address for the page you are on. Count how many posts down you are and add that to the number at the end of the address. The pages are 25 posts long (I think). So the first post on page 3 is post 50 and the next 51 and so on.

kilopi's way keeps the page intact, but mine loads a new page with that post at the top.

Under the first incarnation of the new board, counting posts was the best way to go. You can follow some of the development in this Bad Bad Astronomy thread: Link to a specific post (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=10371#10371). HUb' was the first to accomplish it, using embedded html names that could be referenced in the page address. Old school.

how to capture the IMAGE

kleindoofy
18-April-2005, 06:42 PM
1. Print screen
2. Photoshop
3. New image (size of cache image will be assumed)
4. paste
5. crop
6. file (copy as ...)
7. finished. :D

There may be a more direct way, but this certainly works.

In photoshop, go to save as... and pick whatever you want (.png, .jpg, .bmp, whatever). Also, you can 'Save for web..." and pick a format.

Yes, I anticipated that. That's why I said in 6. file ... copy as

If you file the copy, you can choose the format.

... 6. file (copy as ...)...

I know it's a little tricky and it took me a while to find out how to do it myself. You get used to it though.

Glad to help! :D

Print screen [I did not use alt button]
Paste under Microsoft Photo Editor
Save As [mine defaulted to *.jpg, *jpeg]
Insert File Name [pick a naughty name]
Save

I crop the portion I want to save to my web space, otherwise, the photo will be too large. [Edited to make smaller.]
Can you tell which part of my post is a jpg and which part is not? 8-[

I can never get two different type files to convert, unless I corrupt one of them.

Just do the print screen on the document you have already saved, and use Microsoft Photo Editor. I believe most universities use Microsoft as the standard. Crop the photo to make it professional. When I use the crop function, I don't change any of the settings on the default pop-up. I just hit save. Let me know if it works, HUb'bie.

Mine was to confuse HUb'. I still think it will.

Lycus got lucky on the color background (it could've gone 50/50 depending on an additional post). I bet he is amazed at how well his .jpg turned out, but that is just an assumption on my part.

ATP, my professor and I have come to an understanding. If you remember the question I asked of you earlier in another thread (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=452077&highlight=homework&#452077) . The level of our discussion made it to the Assistant Dean. FYI, I didn't take it there - the professor inadvertently did when he complained about me. :o

The Assistant Dean is now going to take action for the Professor's to teach from the course books assigned. I assume she (Asst. Dean) meant the professor's will be required to teach from examples out of the text assigned by DeVry.

After interrogation from Ms. Dean, I explained that I don't mind if the Professor teaches me short-cuts with programming. I really don't. I just want to be able to use the $80-$90 book as a reference at 3am when I can't get the short-cut to work.

I'm a baaaaaadddd girrrrrl. :P
