Well, A basic rundown of nanotechnology?... It is basically what it says in its name "Nano" - Very small, usually this is associated with Nanobots which are microscopic machines, the most aticipated application for these tiny machines is in the field of medical science. They could potentially allow for the repair of indavidual cells or even killing off infectious viruses. Although they are not limited to just that... here are a few pictures of what nanobots may look like in the future:

Nano technology is also being used in the aerospace department for creating extremely strong fibers called carbon-nanotubes, they will use nanobots to weave these small fibers into something that can be used such as a space tether B)

Nanotechnology is working with materials small than 100 nanometers in size. As stated above, there are numerous applications being investigated. Hagar has used engineered nanotech fibers that repel liquids, so when you spill water on your pants it just runs right off without absorbing and staining. The newest computer chips individual transistors are now in the nanotech size range, and they're looking to go even smaller. Anyone working with bucky balls and carbon nanotubes are working in the nanotech range. As mentioned above, the long term goal are machines that can move through our bodies fighting disease and repair individual cells, or huge swarms of them that can be fed a pile of raw materials and a design and create a finished product by assembling it one molecule at a time.

The dark side is the grey goo scenario and nanotech weapons. The Grey Goo is the idea of creating nanotech machines that can use any raw material around them to manufacture new copies of themselves. The purpose of these would be replacing damaged medical nanomachines inside your body, or in a manufacturing plant, but the worry is that if one goes wrong and just continuously replicates itself, over a very short time these faulty nanomachines could consume all matter on the surface of the Earth to make more copies leaving nothing but a grey goo of tiny nanomachines covering the surface of the planet. The military side is that this could be launched intentionally against an enemy, or some other kind of nano attack that could disable systems in the enemy's military or country.

Aerogels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerogel), very interesting stuff. I believe it is made with the use of nano-technology.

I wounder if it's possible to make a lighter then air aerogel. Sure it wil need o hold some other gas the common air but still.

I do not know how expensive such a material would be or if it can be cheaply massproduce but the implications are interesting. Iwounder how theae materials are made, like can they be poored out of some kind of cannister or sprayed and left to harden? Making a lifing body of this stuff may be interesting as well.
