I saw one of Meade's new telescope offerings, the aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain that the company chooses to call an advanced Ritchey-Chretien Cassegrain, at Skies Unlimited last Saturday afternoon. The 12" f/8 RCX400 was suitably impressive, as it should be, I suppose, for $6599. The Meade representative and I had an interesting conversation about what Chinese competition may mean in coming days. A bit later he took off a cover plate to show onlookers the motors that move the corrector plate up and down to achieve focus.

The Meade 5000 eyepieces were on display as well. I looked through the 18, 24, and 30mm UWA versions with the aid of a TV-85. The 30mm is almost comically large. One thing that I noticed immediately was the lateral color present at the edge of the field.
