San Francisco -- Into the Fire (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/kron/archive/1999/02/10/ba2kquake.DTL&type=ba2k)

San Francisco met its fate on Wednesday, April 18, 1906, at 5:12 a.m. The San Andreas fault tore apart, and so did the City. The first shock lasted 45 violent seconds. Its impact was devastating. The moment was indelible, forever known as "The Great San Francisco Earthquake."

Did we forget this ever happened? I watched a story about this, and it is rumored that the majority of the fires that stemmed after this event were from folks who didn't have earth quake insurance. I think some 3000 people parrished during this tradegy. :(

I don't think it has been forgotten exactly, though not many people are around who recall it directly from experiencing it. But the San Francisco earthquake and teh CHicago fire are a part of American history lore.

I would be suspicious about that insurance claim though. Not sure how many people had earthquake insurance available 100 years ago. But in that era of gas lighting and open flame cooking, when buildings start falling down there is a real good chance some of them will be ignited, plus the gas lines would be breaking and those leaks would also get ignited easily.
