I'll start. Tonight I fried some hamburger meat and filled the pot with tomato sauce. This went over the spaghetti. Also I made a salad with: spinach, red onion, tomato, and artichoke.
I cheated and baked some "Texas Toast". Normally I wouldn't, but tonight was a lazy night.
I'm topping it all off with vodka and 7-UP

I had nachos and pizza. The grad student association gave us free nachos, then we went to a friend's apartment and had pizza. I also had pizza for lunch, we have a weekly seminar and they bought us pizza. I also had free breakfast. Actually, come to think of it I haven't spent any money on food today whatsoever.

The wife and I went to Bennigans tonight. It is a chain in the USA.
SOmetimes we order several appetizers instead of an entree - makes it something like a tapas bar. Well, a little bit anyway.
We ordered crab cakes, and a make your own selection plate with three items on it. We chose: southwest eggrolls, brocolli bites, and some sort of sesame chicken strips. Each had a dipping sauce as well. We also ordered mashed potatoes, because adding them makes it into a meal rather than a snack. That is very scientific, and too complex to explain, trust me, we needed potatoes.
They brought out the selection plate, which we consumed. Well, we consumed the contents, not the plate. We then sat there a while wondering how long it took to plop some potatoes on a plate and serve it. Eventually we asked after our potatoes and crab cakes. Sorry, I'll bring it right out. A little later another server asked if we had our food yet, no we hadn't but maybe we would just give up and leave it at what we already had. OK he said. Ten seconds later out came our potatoes anyway. Oh, I guess we are staying and having a plate of potatoes. Felt funny just eating a plate of potatoes, but we had fun with it. We pretended we were judges on Iron Chef and we judged the potatoes. Ooh, the sweetness of the butter is a wonderful counterpoint to the chives, don't you think?
After another little while out came our original server with the "rest" of our meal. She brought us a second selection just like the first. We mentioned deja vu, but she didn't catch on. After we pointed out that she had already brought these things, and it was crab cakes we were waiting on, she apologised a few times, but we never did see a crab cake.
Check please. We looked forward to finding out what they had the nerve to charge us. (One appetizer plate and potatoes, it turns out)
We are not bitter people, we had a great time laughing at ourselves and the service. We always have a good time, and everything else be damned. But I am not sure how they could have screwed it up more. At least it tasted good. And the potatoes had garlic in them, yum.
Usually it works out better, and with the reduced bill, my $5 off coupon wasn't eligible. Shoulda gone to Red Lobster, those cheese bisquits are to die for. To die for, but not to wait 40 minutes to get seated for.
Last night I had a meatloaf sandwich and some raw veggies.
Sorry, no photos of any of them.

Yesterday was my birthday, hehe....
I took my wife out to the Kupferpanne ("copper pan") in downtown (if there is such a thing) Fuerth.
We had the cocktail du jour (Prosecco, passion fruit juice). I had six oysters on ice (my wife abstained). While my wife went for some delicious deer meat with Brussels sprouts, green beans, porcini and Spaetzle (a German noodle variety), I took veal under slices of goose liver, with a fried apple ring; it came with Brussels sprouts, green beans, a very delicious sort of mushrooms (Pfifferlinge - don't know the English word) and potato gratin. A Pinot blanc from Germany was just the right company.
Afterwards, we shared a mixed dessert: Small peaces of orange and (real!) vanilla ice cream, panna cotta, chocolate and hazelnut mousse, frozen yoghurt and some pieces of fruit arranged around a generous klacks of zabaione.
My wife surrendered therafter, I had a pear schnaps and an espresso macchiato. (Un)fortunately, this coffee came with a small tray of assorted sweats: Pieces of strawberry, cake, banana, nuts, all dipped in dark chocolate. White flag.
Entirely by coincidence, my wife had given me a hand-operated ice crusher, limettes and a bottle of Pitú as a birthday present. Guess what rounded the evening off when we had walked back home?
Difficult to reach the keyboard after this. And the keys are hard to hit first time you try *hickup*.
But what a birthday it was....:D:D:D

Izakaya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izakaya)-style food. It's Japanese tapas -- small plates of spicy, salty, greasy food made to go with beer and sake. Spicy garlic edamame. Wasabi chicken. Grilled sardines. Tripe (on the menu: "Beef guts"). Squid tentacles. Beef tongue. Eel liver. Salmon rice ball. And, best of all, to-die-for butabara, grilled side pork with fat that instantly, miraculously, liquifies in your mouth. Ah...

well, i normally use to take dinner lesser than the day dinner, i use to eat vegetarian menu always. like: chapatis, papad, moongdal, potato-fried curry, ginger soup,( ginger and pepper soup is best for the diet) little warm water in the dinner with the cutted lemon into it( it dialutes the oily portion in the mouth and in the canal pipe from throat to stomatch, sometime gulabjamun(sweet dish especially made from the milk), rice(scented) rice is best to increase the appetite and the weight, sometime banana sweet curry with milk ( banana increases the laxatives in the stomatch, banana is useful after the every exercises and yoga)the tamrind based along with a little chilly base pulses curry (this we regularly use to eat) tasty feeling, sometime i use to take in the dinner dish the bred-potato+hot tomato red chilly sos, the salad of different vegitables into one dish ( the salad of different vegitables gives the iron, calciums vitamins, and fibres to the body), the wheat soft chapati along with the cream on it and sometime the puranpoli(the dish name) with the wheat and the pulses along with juggery or sugar in it, ( the making procedure is very delicate one to cover the raw material into the wet-wheat powder and then baked on the open pan, we eat pan, post dinner or sometime half cup of milk (to dialute the acidity), the pan means a sort of leaf along with a little calcium powder with the coloured flavour of kath and the supari into it, ( to get the mouth taste, or you can say a traditional mouth freshner, after dinner, we chewed instead of chuingum, pan is best one. (the chuingum has some sweet parts into it which may harm the teeths, but it is difficult to convince to the childrens that "don't eat the chuingum, but the childrens never heard, it is for their joy, and one can not snatch the joy of anyone from them).

Dinner is the evening meal.
Lunch is the noontime meal.
people north of Dubuque, IA or those older than 60 are allowed to say Supper.
From Merriam-Webster:
Main Entry: break·fast
Pronunciation: 'brek-f&st
Function: noun
1 : the first meal of the day especially when taken in the morning
2 : the food prepared for a breakfast <eat your breakfast>
Main Entry: 1lunch
Pronunciation: 'l&nch
Function: noun
Etymology: probably short for luncheon
1 : a usually light meal; especially : one taken in the middle of the day
2 : the food prepared for a lunch
Main Entry: sup·per
Pronunciation: 's&-p&r
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old French souper, from souper to sup -- more at SUP
1 a : the evening meal especially when dinner is taken at midday b : a social affair featuring a supper; especially : an evening social especially for raising funds <a church supper>
2 : the food served as a supper <eat your supper>
3 : a light meal served late in the evening
A very small minority of people in English-speaking areas began calling the noontime meal "supper." This is obviously incorrect.
More:
Main Entry: din·ner
Pronunciation: 'di-n&r
Function: noun
Usage: often attributive
Etymology: Middle English diner, from Old French, from diner to dine
1 a : the principal meal of the day b : a formal feast or banquet
2 : TABLE D'hôte 2
3 : the food prepared for a dinner <eat your dinner>
4 : a packaged meal usually for quick preparation <warmed up a frozen dinner>
And more:
Main Entry: 1sup
Pronunciation: 's&p
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): supped; sup·ping
Etymology: Middle English suppen, from Old English supan, suppan; akin to Old High German sufan to drink, sip, Old English sopp sop
transitive senses : to take or drink in swallows or gulps
intransitive senses, chiefly dialect : to take food and especially liquid food into the mouth a little at a time
By the way, the term to "sop up with bread" also extends from the Old English term, "sopp" or "sop," and means the same thing, namely, to take up a bit at a time.
The key, folks, is that it's dinner, and not supper, which can refer to the noon meal, as in most countries it's the noon meal which is the "principle meal of the day." In those cases, it's usually supper they have in the evening, which is usually an amalgem of whatever they had for lunch (dinner).
In countries where the evening meal is the principle meal, they usually do not use the term supper, but instead use the term dinner.
Again, only an isolated pocket of individuals in North America have ever referred to the noon meal as "supper."
If you want to call the noon meal "supper," go right ahead. But please stop insisting the rest of the world is wrong because we choose to adhere to the standards adopted by the other 98% of the population at large.
Thank you.

I love the definitions. If I eat within 2 hours of when I wake up, I call it Breakfast. If I eat within 6 hours of when I wake up, I call it lunch. If I eat two hours before I go to bed, I call it dinner. I don't think I ever use the term supper.
I sometimes wake up at 4am and go to bed by 8pm. I sometimes wake up at 11am and go to bed by 3am. I sometimes wake up at 6pm and go to bed by 10am. It just depends what shift I am working. I have a complicated work schedule. ;)

As ceramic as they come. I have really cool plates (at least I think so anyway)
I make great salads too, if that's what the company likes.
I have this vegetarian friend, only he's not a vegetarian. He's just picky. Although he eats no meat, he also eats only a couple vegetables, lettuce and spinach, but almost nothing else. He does eat some fruits however. SO anyway, I made one of my great salads:
red leaf lettuce, roma tomatoes, red and yellow sweet peppers, olives, red onion, mushrooms, artichokes, and maybe something else.
anyway, he picked out the lettuce and left everthing else.
:hand: what kind of vegetarian doesn't eat salad?

Well, if it is any consolation, last night just I had english muffins toasted and spread with Peanut butter (Skippy SUper CHunk). To liven it up, a sprinkle of dried roasted onion flakes. And hot pickles on the side. I had considered making BBQ pork or maybe chili, but didn't have the energy.
I cook chili competitively. And my cheesecake is awesome - starts with cottage cheese instead of cream cheese. And a hint of lime. Brandy in the crumb crust.
I'm going home in a couple hours, chili sounds good.

I make a great roast turkey with sausage stuffing, and all the expected side dishes: mash taters, baked squash, veggies, crudites. The old lady makes her cranberry pie. One year I made volcano potatoes. MAde mashed potatoes, piled them into a baking dish and formed a volcano cone. Piled a bunch of shredded chedar on the peak and sprinkled paprika liberally over things for red color. Ran it under the broiler for a few minutes to melt the cheese into "lava" with the yellow cheese adding to the red paprika. Once cheese melts I take it out of the oven and add a grouping of little croutons to represent a villiage, and a couple small pieces of parsely for trees, all down by the base. Voila, volcano potatoes. Eat your heart out, Iron Chef.
I like to make a large family style Thanksgiving meal, but one year I wound up alone and had no need of a 14 pound turkey. So I got one of those large turkey legs at the store and some chicken wings. I pinned a chicken wing on either side of it and roasted it. It looked sorta like a tiny turkey. But no place for stuffing. It was sad, but what do you do?

Okay, someone needs to come and take care of me! ;)
Here's dinner - burnt grilled cheese and soup (tomato juice)!
It's no big secret Candy. Just watch your food, and your tastebuds will be rewarded. :)
Is that really tomato juice, or tomato soup? I haven't tried heated tomato juice before.
I had massive bowl of macaroni and tomato soup, with some parmesan cheese added for supper lastnight. Topped it off with some garlic toaste. mmmm simple but good.

what kind of beer do you like?
None of the industrial, artificial type.
It is said that in Bavaria (or even in Franconia, the part I live in), there are more breweries than in the entire US - be that as it may; the important thing is: They are all better.
Some of these breweries produce for little more than the requierements of the their own attached little village inn plus maybe a cool bar in a nearby city or a few privately owned drink markets.
Come over for some fresh St. Georgen, Buttenheimer Schwanenbräu, Alt/Dietzhof, or Hetzelsdorfer! You will not regret it!
There is this story about "rampaging capitalism destroying local traditions" writ large: Annheuser-Busch is one of the sponsors of the football world cup. Now to their bitter surprise everyone here soon learned that their would be no real beer in the stadiums for the world cup - only alcoholic mineral water with flavour enhancers called "Bud". Outcry! General strike! Romani eunt domus! But to no avail.... The empire will force its beer upon us mwhahahahaha.

It's tomato juice. I buy the low sodium kind. It's lower in calories, and it fills you up. I just heat it up when I am in the mood for a soup. I like those water crackers, too.

Fat Tire is one of my favorites, although I was introduced to Anchor Steam in San Francisco this summer and I like that too.new belgium brewing (fat tire, brewed in fort collins, CO) is overrated. i prefer bristol brewing here in good ole colorado springs. laughing lab has to be the best scottish ale i've ever had (i call it chuckling puppy).
tonight, i will have numerous orders of my personal favorite: barcardi-coke in a tall glass. the bar i'm shooting out of tonight does not carry laughing lab, unfortunately. straight there from work, so no dinner. maybe some ramens for lunch, however. :)

I recall the first time I encountered Dos Equis beer. having studied Latin and not knowing any better, I figured it was from the Latin Equus for "horse." I thought "Two Horses" was an unfortunate name for a beer. After all, bad beer is sometimes called horse... never mind. Later I learned it meant Two Xs, like the two large Xs printed on the label...duh.
Arneb, I don't think it is fair to say that ALL beer ordinaire in Germany is better than ALL beer of any kind in the USA. It is fine hyperbole, but there are some very tasty beers here. And as to outnumbering our breweries, I am not so sure there either. The microbrewery thing has exploded here. Even little farm towns around here have breweries now. Oh, not all of them, but they are here. Restaurants with their own brewery spring up in the oddest places.

I think we get into habits. Many people I know don't take the time to cook. They would rather "pick something up" on the way home.
I actually enjoy cooking (much less cleaning) and use it as a form of relaxation. Not only that, but it's entertaining too. When I had a tv, I'd go in the kitchen to be away from it. Now that I don't have a tv, cooking uses time in my evenings.
And I don't mean using microwaves either.
Cooking one's own food is a very healthy way to live. Not just the dietary part, but also the physical and mental aspects of preparing food are good for you.

I'm gonna break rank and post my breakfast: coffee. But, I'd like to share the workings of my coffee maker. It's a Hario vaccum brew device, like something out of a chem lab. Hariousa.com seems comatose (the website needs more caffeine!) but I found this illustartion of how it works: Hario Vacuum Brewing Instructions (http://www.sweetmarias.com/brewing.inst.hario.html).
I'm not a coffee geek. It's been months since I used it. But, it's just so cool. You've got these two glass resevoirs, water in the lower and grounds in the upper. You apply an open alcohol flame to the lower. There's excitement already. After a few minutes, the water vapor pressure in the closed lower container pushes water up a tube, through the coffee grounds, into the upper resevoir, until almost all the water is gone. Then you take away the flame and the lower chamber cools. As the vapor condesnses, low pressure is created and the water is sucked back down through the grounds. It always elicits oohs and aahs when I deploy it in front of an audience.
Who cares how it tastes, when you get drama like that -- and by the way, it tastes very good.

Buffe dinner, buffe on the table but not seating on the chair, 6. dinner on the chair infront of tv 7. dinner in the front hall on the mat, by just chating with the family members, many people eat little but speaks more big during their dinners, many people starts debating during the dinner rather discussing on the dinner items, many peoples discuss the current day events with their family members while taking dinner, 8. many people takes the homework of their childrens during the dinner taking process, 9. many of them starts a word war on verious menus in their dish of dinner, chilly used more, the oil is not balanced in the curry and so on. in short the dinner programme is very interesting one. We had one of our favorite meals, last night. Leg of lamb, stuffed and surrounded with Garlic, and fresh Rosemary, stolen from the neighbors garden. Portabello mushrooms, and potatoes cooked in the juices. We also had a relish tray of fresh veggies, and cheeses--a new one for me, green pepper cheese--very stinky. A bottle of Syrah, from Cayeuse Vineyards, was excellent, and we capped the meal with a few delicate handmade chocolates, from a local chocolatier---65-70% cacao.....delicious. She makes one she calls Mexicali Chocolate--Nutmeg, Cinnamin, peppers,....just beautiful.

Not that cheap instant noodle junk in the cellophane package, but real Japanese noodle-shop ramen, the kind worshipped in the movie Tampopo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092048/): perfect, fresh soba ramen noodles in tonkatsu (pork) broth with glistening globules of fat floating on the surface, topped with slices of chashu roasted pork, a sheet of nori, crunchy kamaboku seaweed, boiled egg, spinach. Slurp. Burp.

Dinner was unremarkable, but in the grocery store I saw something. We all know the little hooks on the front edge of the shelves where they hang various things hoping you will buy them. Like snap on plastic lids in front of the ganned pet food. Tonight I was looking through the salsa and hot sauce aisle, and hanging in from of them were boxes of anti acid pills for the stomach. I found it humorous.
And Halloween candy was 1/2 price, so say hi to my friend, Mr. bag of Kit Kats. (Meow)

many times people throw away the excessive dinner in their home out, they even forget to feed it to the needy one, they even forget to feed the animals who are hungry. if the dinner is in the good condition then there should not be a problem that to dispose it, but to distribute it that's good one, share the things with other means the great joy to the heart of oneself. what do you think?
in most of the people are habitual to take the sweet item in their daily dinner dish :) as soon as they touch the dish with a hot chilly, there is an existence of couple of ssssssss! in their mouth, but immediately they takes the sweet one like cherry, or a sweet creme in the spoon they fills with the words hussssh ! Reminds me of one of my favorite comics. Life is Hell by Matt G. The question is posed: "Which of these nutritious breakfast is better for you?"
The first frame is a big cup of coffee and a sugar donut. The 2nd frame is a big cup of coffee and 2 sugar donuts. For some reason that just cracks me up. He did a neat compilation take-off: Work is Hell. It's a riot.

Went to the Mongolian Barbque again tonight - Genghis Grille.
If you don't know, that is a place where you select your raw ingredients for stir fry, and then they cook it in front of you on a large round grille. Over rice or noodles.
I chose chicken over my usual pork, along with boocoo onions, a pile of cabbage, and summer squash. I went with the peanut sauce with a little honey-garlic. The old lady always puts pineapple in hers. I think she does that just so I won't try hers.

funny you should bump this thread, and even more funny it's soup. I have a great, easy, recipe for black bean soup. I love it. It's my wintertime tradition and staple.
Black beans, jalapenos, onions, garlic and just a little love make this a great soup. I'm sweating though, love those jalapenos.
only disappointment was that I didn't have any flour. I always make a cheesy, jalapeno cornbread to go with it. That cornbread is dynamite.

yeah, I was thinking all that cheese would only be happier with a few serranos thrown in.
Black beans sound good too. I'm not a veg, so I throw in a hock or a hunk of salt pork.
My old lady is all extra sharp cheddar, and I am more Havarti, but we agree on brie. You want a nice warm treat, wrap a small wheel of brie in a pie crust or better yet a phylo crust and run it through the oven until the crust is browned and the cheese melty. if there is not enough crust to go around, add some crackers on the side.
Way to be adventurous Candy.

French bread pizza is easy.
Slice open a small french bread or sub roll or whatever and lay the two halves side by side crust on bottom on a cookie sheet. Spread on them a layer of sauce, some grated cheese of your choice, and run it in the hot oven until melted.
I like to brown some ground beef and onions and hot peppers and throw on there myself, but that is optional. Voila, pizza without having to make dough.

I'm fast becoming a believer that fruits and veggies are more important than most people think.Well, the jambalaya was loaded with vegetables, and I tend to cook them like stir fry no matter what the cuisine. Like to have them flavorful, al dente, and still retaining their vitamins, etc.
Had a side dish of steamed bok choy with the chowder. The pungent bite of that complements the soup quite well.
Re fruits, my favorite, the McIntosh apple, is not available down here. Usually make do with Fujis. Then there's the normal regimen of bananas, oranges, etc.

The glaze is actually a mixed citus, I use both lemon and orange juice. It's very simple, put some OJ in a sauce pan, stir in lemon juice and a dash of brown sugar, thicken it a tad with some cornstarch, cook it up a bit. Pour the warm glaze over sliced pears and garnish with some chopped almonds. I love almonds, but watch out for the large, hard smokehouse variey...I broke a tooth on one of those. *Ouch*, then double *ouch* when I saw the bill for the tooth crown!

Well they do give you a liquid anesthesia, but it comes in an IV and a syringe, not a glass. This is the third time I've done this and it actually isn't done under general anesthesia. It's usually just some pain killers and a little relaxant - more than enough for me, I never remember any of it; don't usually even remember post-op or the drive home. My wife has told me I'm very amusing in post-op, cracking jokes and making up stories, none of which I ever remember. :o

Are you trying to one-up me on the laxative, or is that what you really had for dinner?

It has nothing to do with cooking, everything to do with sanitation.

That is a riot. Had me there during the first sentence; got as far as the word "decent" and was thinking, "Wow, I can't believe they might be that accidentally honest." Then I caught on. Very good.
BTW, Sherri is very sensitive about the meals she serves, even if the origins are from a package. So I had to ease into my true opinion. Began with "Not bad" which was then replaced by "It's got kind of a funny texture, like the sauce is separating" to "The rehydrated mushrooms just aren't my thing" to "I'm not so sure about this stuff" and ended with shoveling the last bit into the garbage and telling her not to save the leftovers. By that time it was easy to be honest without hurting her feelings because the kids (with their brutishly innocent honesty) had told her that it sucked.

I just went to the store and bought frozen lasagna and garlic bread. I got a six pack of Labatt Blue, too. Now, if Cross were here, he'd make this stuff from scratch, except for the beer.

My wife has told me I'm very amusing in post-op, cracking jokes and making up stories, none of which I ever remember. :oThat sounds familiar. I sprained my back one time, had all those meds, and per my fiancée, my behavior was similar to your behavior. I still don't recall anything about what she described.

Swift, I know exactly what you are talking about. I've found that I can feel almost human with the Visicol prep and one of the liquid food products. And, yes, it is a very strange feeling when they inject the drugs into the IV - for about 30 seconds I'll realize what is happening and then my memory goes away. About an hour later (usually an hour - I've managed to shorten that when I'm exceptionally nervous) memories will snap back, but I will sometimes have vague memories of speaking a little earlier.
It is very strange when drugs can effectively turn you off ...

When I was working for Boeing in Seattle, my roommate (who shall forever be known as Annoying Healthy Guy) made that for dinner. It's a pork chop slathered with day-old boiled red cabbage with runny eggs on the side. I was amazed by the unique color scheme (purple and yellow make for an odd looking dinner) and had to take a pic of it.
He even ate it.

Try this peeps, for three people 1 and 1half pounds ground steak, mix with finely chopped onion, 1 clove garlic crushed, 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce, shape into balls, fry in oil until brown on both sides, meanwhile put two chopped onions into a pan, add half a glass of red wine, tomatoe ketchup, and tomatoe puree, reduce until liquid is halfed, and onions are soft and caramalized( This can take a while) put meat balls into cassarole dish, and pour onion-wine mixture over top, bake in oven 5 gas, for 1 hour, after 45 mins grate parmazan cheese over the mixture, and place garlic bread on top. serve with Pasta, or noodles, also great with mashed potatoe's..

Tonight, thanks to Kroger having steeply discounted some fish that was about to expire, date-wise, I enjoyed what I refer to (when I refer to it at all) as my "Animal House" dinner: flounder baked in olive oil with cajun-style pinto beans on the side.
Of course there were chips too, with malt vinegar.
Funny thing about the term "chips". There was a fast food chain that was popular in the US for while in the 70s called Arthur Treacher's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Treacher%27s) (after the stage/screen actor and regular on the Merv Griffin show) which served fish and chips. Not wanting to disappoint the 'muricans or get sued for misrepresentation, the chips were made of potatoes, about 40 mm round and rather thin. One could have used them in a game of poker.
It appears the remaining Arthur Treacher's restaurants have returned to a more traditional form of chips. (http://www.arthurtreachers.com/)
