I've put in an approximate and vague pin for myself. It's not where I live (I am obsessively private), but I can be there in a little over an hour in the unlikely circumstance that I ever have to be. I did meet Michael Winner there, once. He was lost. The director with no sense of direction, I thought I was going to die laughing.

It's probably a national park or something like that. It looks big on the map, but it's probably not all that big, because it's so far north, so it's stretched.

I see that the source page is essentially human-unreadable,
mostly a dense script of some kind, but it doesn't specify
what kind. I know my browser does JavaScript because it
runs the JavaScript I've put in my own web pages.

What browser do you use? Sometimes permissions for JavaScript are finer grained. E.g. in FireFoox, you must activate JavaScript and check the box to allow JavaScript to change graphics.

I'm using IE 5.0. I tried to install 5.5, but I wasn't able to
jump through MS's hoops. I downloaded the minimal IE 5.5
which was 7 MB of files, clicked on the installer, it tells me it
needs a different version of the installer (huh?), I download
and install the different installer. Click again to install IE 5.5,
it tells me it needs to go back online and download IE 5.5,
which is 26 MB. Multi-hour download. I start downloading.
Maybe 40 minutes later it crashes. Try to resume the
download, it starts at the beginning.
MS software isn't bad-- it's just that the people who make
and market it are evil, soulless, bloodsucking demons.
I can find an alternative browser on my own, but can you

my hair is normally shorter and i only have a beard like that about once a week. the morning i shave, actually. ahem, yes, i'm a bum. a hippie bum that shoots a LOT of pool, i suppose. i posted a note with that, btw. this was taken while we were still in florida (melbourne) circa february 2001. i had a high fever the day the guys delivered the table. hallucinations, actually. my buddy came over later and kicked my butt on the table right before i passed out for the next few days. ahhhh, the life.
if i can manage to get a picture of my son and i in there, i will attempt to replace this. he's cuter than me. :)

I find it charming, too. It just seems to stay static. I want to see dynamic.
English is difficult language. I work on learning.
Example:
- I do not use articles because English have only neutral articles. Rules for use complex.
- verbs difficult to conjugate. many irregular forms
- some words confusing: (then, than), (effect, affect)
- slang and idiom sometime confusing.
I have learned possessive forms.
I have learned to conjugate verbs with "to".
Posts only time I use English. I will try to become better.

I've not yet been to Provence Monique, but I have cycled round the Bassin de Thau in the Languedoc - that taught me the French for "my bicycle is broken"! English is difficult language. I work on learning.
I hope learning English is easier to you as it was to me. After all, English is not that different from French (well, I don't speak French, so for me it's easy to say so...). Because they both are Indo-European languages they have prepositions and articles, stuff that my mother tongue Finnish lacks -- it has no articles at all (hey, who really needs them... I really hate them :wall: ), and instead of prepositions just some "simple" inflections* and postpositions to express things.
*) 15 inflection cases for nouns which inflect in over 50 different ways, if you count all the different inflection types. And then there are the verbs and their inflections...

(Sigh) Must be living here in the provinces.... you type in your village name and get a hit. I type in where I live - a large, sprawling town of some 400,000 people and get nada. As a result, the map says I live nearly 100km from where I actually am! :(

Ah, but the English came up with the expression "pardon my French." Remember, England and France have been at war with one another many, many times over the last thousand years. Calling bad things French was an insult to the thing and the French, all at once. (A related term is the old-fashioned slang of "French letter" for condom.)

I see it as this: Some people find it annoying, some people do not.
The advantages to typing "u" instead of "you" is to save a few milliseconds of typing, not have to be decent at typing out sentences (hence, have a lower WPS), and being "cute", perhaps.
The disadvantages are: You probably will annoy someone sooner or later, you can't write any documents using that method in school, you won't be able to practice your typing skills, and a few other unmentioned disadvantages.
The disadvantages trump the advantages. There's more good to trying to type in a more proper manner (and I mean "proper" to mean, what businesses and schools expect of you, not myself).
At least, that's the way I see it. If you think differently, you're wrong. (Just kidding!)

I don't think it was necessarily annoying to most people either, just that it was ironic that in a nitpicky grammar thread, you weren't practicing proper sentence structure! ;)
But I also feel that noone should feel pressured to change the way they post here just because it's annoying to some people. (I know you're not pressuring, just stating that it annoys you.) Abbreviations annoy some, resurrecting old topics annoys others, but instead of pointing it out I think the graceful thing to do is just ignore it. With the thousands of posters on this board, there are going to be thousands of posting styles PLUS different levels of annoyances. All should be tolerated if it's not against the rules.

I don't see anything wrong with politely stating that it annoys me. If they say that it would take too much to change the way they post, then I'd live with it. However, I'm not the type that likes to keep silent about my feelings in anything. That's what annoys me about school; people complain about their instructors behind their back, but never have a face to face conversation with the instructors about what they do.
Personally, sometimes I put in the effort into discussing something with the instructor in private when I have an objection to something. I keep it polite and civil, and don't try to annoy them. So that's basically what I was trying to do here... but it's hard to be private on a messageboard.

I thought about the private issue after I typed my message. Someone might be more receptive to changing their style if they are asked to in a PM rather than in front of everyone. Personally, I would be embarrassed if something I did was pointed out in front of everyone, and it started a long OT conversation. Some people might get offended. Others might not care!
Of course this is just another example of my opinion. It bothers some that people use abbreviations, and it bothers me when people point it out! Oops--just my mentioning that is hypocritical! Sorry if I offended anyone. :D

I won't even to bother to read posts if they are written in shorthand gibberish.
Yeah, ditto. Once I see a 'u' for you, or as soon as I realise that what appears to be one sentence with no capitalisation or punctuation is actually meant to be separate sentences (you see that a lot on Amazon reviews), I stop reading. I don't take such an extreme approach, since many of my friends do type without proper capitalization and such (but not so much on the "u" and such).
I discourage it, but I don't write off people that type that way. In fact, I was the only one in a chatroom willing to talk to a newbie with few friends in a chatroom, and further drove people away with his typing style. I still talked to him, and we became friends, pretty much. He was a pretty interesting character. (We've split up since then as friends, when we ticked each other off, but that was a completely unrelated issue).

I think my post above sounds a little bit too harsh, and less tolerant than I really am. I must have got out of bed on the wrong side or something....
I don't write someone off if they mis-spell a word, or don't capitalize the initial letter of each sentence, or anything like that. I was thinking more of this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/AWQ0F396JD9U/ref=cm_cr_auth/002-2434139-7144827?%5Fencoding=UTF8)sort of thing... (Bad Amazon reviewer warning)

That's just too annoying. :wall:
I rarely read anything lacking at least some kind of punctuation and capitalization. And I don't like abbreviations and replacing words with numbers either, but that's mainly because it takes somewhat longer time for me to understand the posts. English not being my mother tongue, you see. I've learned it just as much by reading as listening, unlike most of you who learned to speak it before learning to write it. That's why all those should of/should have, their/they're/there mistakes appear little odd to me.

replacing letters with numbers... alternating caps and lowers... I'm not interested in what such a person has to say, and he obviously has no desire to make himself understood. He can safely be relegated to the land of 5-year-olds.
Punctuation and spelling... here, it depends on the circumstances. In casual 'conversation' such as is found here, I tend to ignore it - questioning the author if the meaning isn't clear. In formal settings and newspapers/magazines, proper punctuation and spelling is essential. (this includes resumes.. you would not BELIEVE the number of resumes I see where the grammar and spelling could be bettered by my 13-year-old. Some of these resumes are from people who purport to have been in the professional world for decades. <shudder>)

What the heck?
How is it 136 folks have figured out how to put their little pin on the map and I can't? For the life of me, I can't even see any instructions on how to do this.
Sure I filled out the info box & hit "add me" but I just disappeared into the ether.
I notice there is a drop down list of cities to choose from. Must you pick one of those cities? What if you don't live in one of those cities?
And if you fill out that info box with a city that is not one of the ones on the drop-down list, is the map smart enough to put you where you belong?
Somehow, I think there is a way we must "physically" pin our location on the map (and connect this to the Shout info). But I see no way to do this.
I'm feeling pretty dumb right now.

Well, color me surprised. It seems that right now, blogs are more popluar than BBs! Yesterday, BA posted on his blog (http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2005/11/09/where-are-the-badastrobloggers/) a new frappr page for BAbloggers, http://www.frappr.com/badastronomyblog. In less than a day, it has 175 members. In BAUT's 2+weeks, we have only 146! And I looked through the names on the bablog page, there are only a handful of posters on both.
I wonder why the blog generates more interest than the BB for this type of thing!

Most people on the BLOG are in the US....
A) Is that such a bad thing?
B) There's a reason for that. For one, outside of the UK, America is the largest nation of American-speaking population. (I say American, 'cause we all know that American is different than English).
C) Who cares about Britain anyways? (Seriously, just meant in jest; there are several people from the UK, though.)
Also, America has a very very large population. As a result, you can bet that there would be several people from there.

According to The Eyes of Nye, the US is the third most populous country in the world. (At least, that's what I remember him saying, and I'll admit I haven't checked his figures.) Therefore, logically, the majority of posters to an English-language board and readers of an English-language blog would be Americans, given that neither of the more populous countries have English as a major language.

What are the other two countries, India and China? Due to all the US outsourcing, India is getting pretty good with their English. I bet it will be their second language in the very near future.
I didn't know that India had a large Portuguese heritage until just recently. A lot of the people that work for our vendors have very "Latin" names. Interesting.

Um, Candy, India has about 200 languages. At least, about 200 languages considered "major" by its standards. While English is the international language of business, it would take a lot of outsourcing to make a population larger than that of the US to have English as a major language.

Gillianren, this link for India (wikipedia) (http://publicliterature.org/en/wikipedia/i/in/india.html) states the Republic of India, is the second most populous country in the world and is the world's largest democracy, with over one billion people speaking about 800 distinct languages.
Off to the side, it also adds that the Official Language is Hindi, English, and "other" official languages.
I guess English is already an "Associate" Official Language. :)
Languages
India is home to two main language families, the Indo-Aryan and Dravidian derived languages. India's national language is Hindi. English is classified as an Associate Official Language is widely used in higher echelons, and is seen as the language of social mobility and standing. Two classical languages native to the land are Sanskrit and Tamil.
Eighteen other official languages are recognised by the Constitution for official administrative use by various State Governments. The number of living languages in India has been estimated to be as high as 400. (See List of Indian languages by total speakers)
Gillianren

Okay, I'll concede that, but I'll also point out that it wasn't outsourcing but colonization that made it so. I would further suspect that, at this point, the majority of English speakers are in the cities, and most people in India who speak it only do so as a second language.

She has a southern accent. It's kind of funny when you look at her and she says something like: "Hey, yall."

I took Japanese in high school (wish I paid more attention). I can still read and write it very well (note, reading is not the same as understanding), but if I had a conversation with a Japanese person, they would think I was retarded. The most important phrase: Wakarimasen. (I don't understand.) Followed by: Sukoshi Nihongo [the grammar is wrong....I know] (I know little Japanese). Surprisingly, the character set is pretty easy to learn. (there's 3. Hirigana, Katakana, & Kanji)

Speaking from a grad student's perspective, I would agree and disagree with you. There very likely was some colonial influence on English being one of the official languages, and that's probably about on equal footing with the fact that today English is *the* international language. I have a number of Chinese/Taiwanese, Indian, and Korean colleagues who *all* have learned English throughout school (written/read at least). The eastern Europeans are probably in the same boat, but I'm not sure that's a fact. In India, Hindi seems like it's the primary common language, if you will, with English as the second one. (Although I wouldn't expect its use as such.)
