I have had the Cartes Du Ciel software on my computer for at least three months already, but there are many things that i dont quite understand about it yet. The sky charts are wonderful, i just put in my location and i get a chart of my area of the sky in seconds, and it helps me alot to know what to look for when observing the sky. But that is about all i really know how to do on it. What i wanted to ask incase anybody else has this software, is that what else can i do with this software other then just view skycharts. I have heard about alot of add ons but do not really know what they are for or which ones are worth downloading. Also i can get beautiful images of the planets on this program, but i dont know what am i doing wrong, because when i save one to my image folder, it does not look at all like the one on the program.
Thanks...

Hi!
I have this program- but it scared me...
the add-ons for catas-de-clei they are quite frightening but once you get used to them I suppose... they look really good if only I could use them
I like starry night best(got it free on a sample from a PC world magazine)
you can just drag the sky around with the mouse- so much simpiler to navigate...
I used The Sky 6 now- I won it
sorry I can't be more help...

According to the website, Starry Night Pro takes up only 500MB. That's not a lot (especially if you have around 240GB).

I have been using Cartes Du Ciel for a couple of years now. I like it. It's a powerful program for the price (free). I use it primarily to control my telescope. Most of what you see in the original download is not much until you download additional files. These contain information such as NGC objects, comets, asteroids, etc. It's not as user friendly (it was written by a French astronomer) as Starry Night, but again, for the money it can't be beat. I also like it's small size, I run this on a laptop with several other imaging programs during a night's observing.
On a side note, I also run Starry Night on my desktop at home. I use it to help plan my observing sessions.
