I'm bored this holidays, so I'm going to see how long I can stay awake starting frim newyears eve.

I'm going to aim for 50, then 80 hours.

I'll write evey hour how I'm feeling etc...

Time- AEST (Total time awake)
13:00 (1:00)

Woke up from 9hrs sleep and had a shower... still feeling like I want to go back to bed. I'm not a morning person.

I have too much to do tomorrow that would be toast if I tried to stay up all night (never mess with power tools) ((never mess with power tools when you are wired from too little sleep))

I would strongly advise all of you not to do this.

Sleep deprivation is suspected as a possible cause of multiple sclerosis, an invalidating and potentially fatal disease. It can also trigger a psychosis.

mickal555

Get enough sleep every night. Sleep is especially important to those with MS. Sleep-deprivation can trigger symptoms and depress your immune system
http://vanderbiltowc.wellsource.com/dh/Content.asp?ID=1189
Does this mean you have to already have MS? I'm not sure...
Hmmm
I'll be carefull...

Time- AEST (Total time awake)
6:08 (18:08)

My legs are sore because I was walking around the city last night(to watch the fireworks). I feel kinda sleepy... But otherwise OK. I think I'll watch a movie...

it's FUN. I love driving. The thing to do, though, is get the heck off the interstate. Pick up the federal highways and travel on those. (I've found, for instance, that I can travel from here to my parents on federal highways in less time than taking the interstate. It's 750 airline miles, and the milage is about the same between the Interstates and the highways... but I'm more relaxed on the highways, so travel better)

Of course.. the accidents on the interstate have proven to be more spectacular...

Well we were pressed for time, so it was interstate all the way...

the accidents are more amazing, this time there were only 2 accidents, one was bad, 2 totaled cars, the other was a fender bender, and both were at stoplights. For some reason there was absolutely no thick traffic all the way down and back, quite odd really, just a car here and there, thats it.

Hey mickal, good luck man and all the power to ya from everyone here cheering you on, you gota do it! (Ahem, except Relmuis, who sounds a lot like my mom!;) :D Just joking man, don't get mad)

um... ok,I'll bite. Reference?

and I really really strongly doubt a single 'binge' would be a problem. If anything, consistant sleep deprivation might be a contributor. My quick research seems to indicate MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease, wherein the immune system gets confused and starts attacking the protective sheath around nerves.

Sleep deprivation can depress the immune system, I think, but confuse it? I dunno. It's not like T-cells even have a sleep period of their own. I might get confused after a time with little or no sleep, but I generally function (in an overall sense) on things less precise than chemical reactions.

Just curious... what was your destination? I drive about 25 miles one-way to work, and almost never see an accident. The president of the Search and Rescue group I belong to drives about 50 miles one-way (on a different interstate, but through the same city) and rarely goes a week without having to stop for a messy one.

(the most interesting accident I've seen going too and from my folks was where a tanker truck of gasoline had run OVER a small red sports car, and the whole mess was on fire)

oh, and go, Speed, go! You and the Mickal555 can beat Racer X!

I have to believe this is the case. I have no reason to doubt that CHRONIC sleep deprivation compromises the immune system, and that could be linked to any number of bad things in the body, I don't get sick often, but it usually (in my mind) has reduction in sleep over several days as a contributing factor.

"only in my mind...."

Actually, I do agree with you here.. though with me it's sometimes hard to tell, since I sleep so little anyway. If my wife gets fewer (Hi, Gillian!) than 20 or 30 hours of sleep a day, she tends to start feeling poorly.

um... ok,I'll bite. Reference?

I read about this in the scientific section of a daily newspaper, but I can't quote the article, as this must have been about fifteen years ago. Just now, I tried Google, but found only articles about lack of sleep exacerbating MS, not causing it.

The mechanism, however, would be through the neurons primarily and the immune system secondarily. Lack of sleep would damage neurons, causing them to express unusual molecules on their surface, which would then cause the immune system to see them as alien and attack them. More or less the same mechanism whereby mechanical damage to a joint may provoke rheumatism, or damage to one eye may cause sympathetic ophthalmia in the other one.

During my search, I found some claims that lack of sleep may cause obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, suppression of the immune system, infectious disease and narcolepsy.

And it has been long known that lack of sleep may cause psychosis. For this I can include a reference.

I don't think cause is the right word.. I'll buy contribute, though

Thanks - but no need. I need look no farther than my own forehead for that.. I spent a large portion of my adult life seriously short on sleep. Now that I'm up to 4 hours a night, I'm much better. (fortunately, it was a mild psychosis)

I remember back in high school doing something like this. Though my reason for staying awake was for the game convention I was attending. I managed to stay up for four days straight (via disgusting and probably dangerous amounts of caffiene). On the fourth day I literally fell asleep standing up, collapsed (on to a bed thankfully) and slept 16 hours.

In hindsight, not one of my better ideas.
