Look we have all these stockpiled weapons in the thousands. So why not start using them for a good time and reduce stockpiles at the same time. We all have seen those old grainy films but just imagine what a good old fission-fusion detonation would look like on HDTV!!!! We could even have a lottery where a person who won could win 10 Million OR get to push the button on a 100kt tactical device on the 4th of July. What better way to deter terrorists from bombing us if we willing to go nuclear on a holiday.

Too many detonations in atmosphere would be a problem with regards to fallout (layer-cake bomb designs tend to be quite dirty), and the use of nuclear weapons in space is banned by international law.

Good idea.... I can't wait for the space custodians to put a mop in your hand and make you clean up your mess.

Great idea America ! You take the lead on the 4 th of july and France follow you the 14 th of july !

Yes lets go nuclear and stop whining about fallout ,retreatment and so on !

The future is bright and shining !

How many times have you seen the newscast where the third world leader is addressing his fanatic followers and they shoot their little guns into the air to celebrate his words of bravado. Now think of the effect our newscast could have if after our leaders speak we set off a few thermonuclear fireballs.

You've got to be joking there, DukePaul. Are you?

Although, the thought of raining them down on a few rogue nations sounds a little fun to my dark, evil side....

Just how close would those fireballs be to your leaders?

Don't tempt me to give you my ideal answer to that one. :D:p

Come on people, get with it!!! Everyone is worried they are going to catch the bird flu, looking over their shoulder in case a tsunami is sneaking up on them, watching the skies for that rogue comet to hit. Lets have some fun with the big toys before those things happen and also have a holiday the family will remember.

Well, it would be one way to cut down on drunk driving. Hard to start a car who's electronics are fried by EMP.

The idea's not completely without merit...

'oh say can you see' boom zzzzzzzz(cheap radiation sound effect) 'by the dawn's early light' boom zzzzzzz. Another benefit of such a grand fireworks event is that most of our soldiers will want to stay in Iraq and Afghanistan where it is safer than come home.

You only get an EMP with high-atmosphere or orbital detonations.

Well, since we're using them as fireworks in a display we honestly hope we'll survive... :)

(Note: I'm not even remotely trying to be serious in this thread)

so, what you do is have the blasts set to go off at .. oh.. 5km altitude. They would be relatively clean, since air blasts generate little fallout, and they're not high enough to seriously worry about large effect EMP.

Problem solved.

Think of the effect this would have on illegal immigration. "Those Americanos are crazy instead lets go to south to Chile!!"

Yep, but if you go too far south in Chile, then you get UV irradiated...

I dunno, I think it would throw the song off track. Hard to keep the feeling going when yu are waiting for fuzz to settle.

'Sides, we have an fireworks ban in effect here in Texas.

Realy?? you ban fireworks, but allow handguns

it's ok, Zebo, *I* don't understand that either.

Off the cuff, maybe it's because fireworks are seen as 'toys' while handguns are seen as tools

Crazy like a fox!

It's been a particularly dry year in Texas this year. Fireworks are very good at catching dry grass (or even moist grass) ablaze. There's also a burn ban around these parts as well. Torch your fall leaves and you too could be paying your neighbor's mortgage!

That does explain why half of Texas and all of Icklahoma is on fire these days

I guess I'll just stick to shooting a pistol up in the air. Can't start a fire that way. :D

no, but you can kill your neighbor.
Unless, of course, you have no neighbors.

I know, I was just kidding...

But, could it really kill someone? If you fire straight up once the bullet reaches the peak of it's trajectory it would fall back to Earth with only gravity acting on it, right? Would it's velocity be high enough to hurt someone?

yeah,it's happened a number of times.. let me see if I can find a recent reference...

cruddies - it was on the news earlier today - young man at a party shot his gun into the air, killed a neighbor.

Ok here is an idea. We all agreed that the Space Shuttles are getting old and something is going to have to be done with them. As kids we loved to blow up those model planes when they got old SO lets load the STS with a humongous nuke, pop it up to low earth orbit and let the good times roll.

THe midwest is having a pretty hardcore dryspell right now. A lot of places in northern Texas and Oklahoma have been burned pretty seriously because of drought conditions.

Fireworks would be like throwing a magnesium flare in a lake of kerosene...

Very good idea , and it save a lot of money .

And if with the bomb we load in the cargo bay some barils of sodium or rubidium or some copper ; we can have fine colourfull clouds : yellow, red, green !

Somebody knows how to get some blue ?

We had some idiot shooting off fireworks right outside our bedroom window last night. Blessedly, we'd already shut D out of the bedroom, so we didn't get Nuclear Kitty of Ten Thousand Claws.
