Crosscountry visited my part of the world today. We had a nice lunch at what was supposed to be a Mexican restaurant that is now Chinese, then stopped by the Goddard Visitor's Center. We chatted for a bit with one of the employees there, whom we somehow managed to persuade to take us on a tour, even though they don't officially do tours any more.

Anyhow, we got to see the big clean room, which currently houses the Wide-Field Camera 3, one of the replacement instruments that will go on Hubble if the servicing mission comes off, an acoustic test room, a smaller cleanroom where they are putting the STEREO spacecraft together, NASCOM, and the SOHO control center offices (though not the control center itself).

And, yes, Candy, we should have a photo of the two of us standing in front of the Delta rocket behind the visitor's center. (Those who have visited Goddard will know exactly what I'm referring to.)

I was there a few years ago. That clean room is something else. I happen to know Dr. John Wood, who has been a speaker at a number of ASH meetings and events.

It's cross's camera - ask him. I left mine at home. (We're not supposed to have them at the office.)

I had a great time. My friend Dan, aka BatDan, joined me as he lives in this area and interned at Goddard many summers.

We met ToSeek at La Hacienda, a chinese restaurant, for lunch and got to know each other. Afterward, as he said, we visited some interesting parts of Goddard. I was really impressed with the things we saw as I've always been interested in space technology. It was really cool seeing future parts of the HST and other instruments that would fly into space. That and the comedic tour guide made quite an afternoon.

I have pictures of ToSeek and myself plus several of the neater parts of the tour. But you will have to wait to see them until I get home in a week or so. My camera has a funny connector that I left at home.

Thanks ToSeek for taking an afternoon off to show Dan and I around. It was great to meet you.

What level of clean room do they keep those parts in? Class 10000?

Yes, and it's the largest class 10,000 cleanroom in the world. More info here. (http://sm3a.gsfc.nasa.gov/ssdif.html)

At 125 feet (38.1 meters) long, 100 feet (30.48 meters) wide and 89 feet (27.13 meters) high, it can simultaneously hold the entire contents of two Shuttle cargo bays.
It is 1,000 times cleaner than a hospital operating room.
One whole wall is made up of HEPA filters that remove particles smaller than a red blood cell.
Air constantly circulates through the filters, across the room, out tiny holes in the opposite wall, over the ceiling and back through the filters.
Two 35-ton cranes are suspended 69 feet (21.03 meters) and 80 feet (24.38 meters) above the floor.
A computerized system monitors and controls the environment 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Only properly trained, "bunny-suited" people may enter.
For easy identification, astronauts are the only people who wear blue hoods.
What in the world is this?

It used to be a Mexican restaurant. It changed over so recently that the "Hacienda" sign is still out front. I think it's called "China House" now.

My wife is really annoyed because she liked the Mexican dishes there.

I'm surprised La Hacienda went kaput. They got some pretty good business.

They're still there, with most of the same staff. They're just a Chinese restaurant now. I don't know why - there's no shortage of Chinese restaurants in the area, either.

I don't know why I find this so humorous. I'm visualizing Mexican's working at a Chinese restaurant.

Reminds me of this great little Japanese restaurant in Lafayette. The chef is Chinese. You can hear and see him yelling in the background all the time in English, "I'm Chinese!" He curses a lot, too. He cracks me up! You think I have a temper, he's worse.

Well, the crowning irony is that the restaurant is run by a family of (Asian) Indians, who for some reason decided that they could do Mexican food better than the Mexicans. They actually did pretty well for a good long while, particularly with the Goddard lunch crowd. I don't know what made them change - a Chevy's (Mexican food chain restaurant) opened up a couple of miles down the road, but that was several years ago.

Heh. Just noticed that the ads were for Chinese, Mexican and Thai food.

I bet that nowhere around you can get a good curry.

I never could. Around here, Chinese and Mexican have been around forever, but I didn't taste Indian food until well into adulthood. It is getting more common these days, but I never developed a taste for it.
