Has anyone ever used one of these?

How did it work?

Hmm, missed this thread somehow.

I've seen them but not used them. Personally I just use a dedicated tripod...

BTW, hotlinked image = bad; url = good. ;)

I use a tripod...

I wounder how sturdy it is? It looks rather flimsy, and would it be OK for terestial shots?

You can buy T rings for your camera and an adaptur that bipasses the tripod... But unless you had counter weights and/or a really big scope...

What type of scope is it for and what type of images are you planning to take with what camera?

I have a 10" Meade LX-50 and the (digital) camera is an Olympus C-3040 (at the moment). The Digi-Ts are pretty expensive. I was looking for a cheap way out. I've never tried a using a tripod though.

The problem with a tripod is that unless you are taking quick photo's(bright stuff i.e moon, some planets) the scope will rotate the light out of the camerea- this would be less of a problem with the camera mount thingy...

It all depends on what you want to do with it

Yeah, I get it.

But being new to astro-photography, I don't know what I want to do.

The camera mount looks like a cheap experiment and I'll probably pick one up. I was just wondering if anyone had already tried it and knew it was a bad idea.

I think it'd be hard to go wrong with the adapter, after your gear description. Trying to use a tripod with your SCT would seem like a serious pain (but I can get away with it on my dob). Should work quite nicely with the C-3040 (I was previously using a C-3030 before the 20D came along).

Thanks, Wolverine. I think I'll give it a try.

What basically happened was, I spent much money on a big telescope and lots of goodies a few years ago and then never used any of it. But now I'd like to start.

Lance : The Orion SteadyPix Camera Mount comes with a .965" and 1.25" eyepiece adapter. I purchased one just before i changed scopes; it has a 2" eyepiece on the 10" reflector i now use. The SteadyPix Mount attaches to the eyepiece so was combersome to set up aline etc but worked good.

Thanks for the feedback, Doug. I expected it would be a bit cumbersome, my concern was that it actually coupled securely. So, is the one you were using now available? If you'd like to part with it, PM me.

Well, I placed my order for this device through Amazon. It should be here next week some time. I'll let you all know how it works.

And please accept my apology in advance for the bad weather about to befall the Midwest.
