So, tonight I was working at my night job and every time I went outside for a smoke, I looked up and the sky was perfectly clear. I have only got to use my scope one time since I got it and was preparing myself for a night of observing when I got off work.

Just as I was driving home, clouds started rolling in... is my luck bad or what!!! :wall:

Ah, and there will be many similar instances in the future. Nature has a penchant for harshness. ;)

The times that irk me the most: when I've already set up my dob and all the gear under nice clear skies only to have it cloud/fog over before the scope's cooled down. Bleh.

I hate it when the only time it's clear is when it's full moon and then when it's new moon it's clear. It's happened all holidays... I've got next to no observing done :(

Well yes could be a reply for almost all of the statements above.

Except for my post, besides the topic wasn't a question and the replied question was rehtorical anyway...

hence the eh?

We've had perfectly clear skies here for the last week. Plus all the leaves are off the trees so not as much obstruction. I'm just too lazy to set up the scope.

Here in the great northwest we have managed to have 21 days(nights) of rain, with clouds for almost a month You just have to be happy with what you get.

The pattern I've noticed is when I get anything new it will be cloudy for at least 2 weeks starting the day of it's arrival. I got an etched EP a couple of years ago and it was cloudy every night I could even try to use it for 5 weeks. You're not alone.

It's a well known fact that any purchase of astro gear will result in many weeks of cloudy skies...

When I arrived in Australia from the UK, I was really looking forward to some clear skies. I booked a 2-night stay at Uluru (aka Ayer's Rock), and was slavering at thought of those dark skies surrounded by desert. You guessed it - first night:cloudy. second night : cloudy. I had to leave at 5am that morning - and got a glorious view walking to the bus!

Last year, we went to Heron Island - miles off the coast. Had that sinking feeling the first observing night - but the second was clear

Still, all this pales compared to that french guy who tried to see the previous transit of venus 150(?) years ago. He sailed to India for the ideal spot, but his ship was delayed so he had to watch from on-board ship (not the best environment for sensitive measurements). Undeterred, when they landed, he stayed to catch the repeat performance 8 years later - which was (you guessed it) cloudy. So he returned home - only to find his family thought him dead and had sold all he owned !!

Now that's just sick. I hope the weather gods are reading this.

26 days now, with more to come. Someone in Seattle must have got a really spectacular scope last month.

I'm getting really bored with naked-eye observations of dark nebulae.

Would somebody in central Texas please buy a scope?

I may end up being the hero here. If I can play my cards right, this (http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=8503) will be coming home with me in the next couple of days. Should be close enough to get the job done. :D
