I have Burgess/TMB 9, 6, & 4mm eyepieces (I think these are the only 3 in that series. 9mm is my favorite of the 3 BTW).
Here's the problem: The 4mm 'rattles'. This is the only one that does this.
Something is sliding back and forth inside of it. I estimate it (whatever is moving) has .080" - .100" travel.
I don't use the 4mm a whole lot (it's a little more magnification than I need/can use), but I don't think the optical quality is too bad. Is this normal, or is it defective?
I've been kinda scared to take it apart and see what's going on in there. I guess I should contact Burgess and ask them, but I thought someone on here might have the same eyepiece.

Ok, after looking around on the Burgess website I found this: http://www.burgessoptical.com/EPs/Planetary_Ring.html
Maybe that will fix it. I took the barrel off of all 3 of them. Looks like they all need that ring.

Well, that ring does not fix it. The movement is not in the barrel.
Nobody has any advise?

A rattle inside sounds like there is a loose lense or else there is something loose inside.

I am surprised that the optical quality is good.

Can you see anything inside it?

I don't know much about Burgess, but TMB have an outstanding reputation, and I think you can trust their (and Burgess') customer service. I think you should give Burgess a call and see if there's a problem.

That's what I suspect.

I can't see anything moving when I take the barrel off. There is a retaining ring holding the lens in. I tried tightening it up, but it was already tight. I didn't really want to take it apart (I'm afraid I might mess something up).
I'm going to call Burgess today and see what they say.

Well, I just got off the phone with Burgess. Here's what they told me:

Take off the rubber eyecup, take off the large retaining ring under it. There is another retaining ring around the lens, tighten that down then put it all back together.
That fixed it.

They said about one in 20 will vibrate loose during shipping, but they're working on a new procedure to prevent it.

I guess the saying we have at work applies to telescopes & eyepieces too.
"The job isn't done 'till it draws blood."
I cut my finger on the threads while tightening the ring.

So... anyone know how to get bloodstains off an eyepiece?
