View Full Version : Old PC... Putting it to good use?
Jorge
29-January-2006, 10:29 PM
I create a new pc from some old parts
2,4ghz, 512mb ram, 30gb HDD
ATM it is running linux.
There use to be some threads around here about SETI@home...
but IIRC that project ended, so is there a replacement?
I could put it to use of the progret +- 4h per day.

But you need to do that manually, don't you? You can't just let a PC run and do it for you.

So what profession exactly will this computer be used under? And I'm still trying to figure out what all those little characters under your signature are supposed to signify, Jorge.

Delphi, if I'm not mistaken (and I might be, it's been a while), you'll want to google on the term "Geek Code". Wikipedia might have the translation key.

Dude, you call that thing "old"? That's got higher specs than the machine I'm using now... With those 512 MB of DDR, it could be a good desktop system.

I hope not (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/). It just switched over to BOINC that's all :)

Its nice, but its not top of the line. 512MB is only just meeting the minimum requirements on most high end applications anymore. The CPU is sweet, anything better than 1.5GHz is more than sufficient. The HD is marginal for any heavy media or gaming use. Its a good back up machine, but not a proper desktop.
I should also note, I'm speaking from WinWorld, not LinuxLand, which I know you hail from, GJ. :p Windows software is notoriously code bloated.

Yep tis geek code :D
What profession will the Pc be used under?
None, i'de say... I'm a student, I develop Web applications in my free time (main machine AMD 3800+, 2gb, dual 19' tft, Gforce 6600 256mb, 0.5tb hdd :shhh:)
this was build from leftovers, so it can be a more or less dedicted box for this, It can be turned on when i'm home.

Something like this was to be expected comming from you :D

I said its made from left overs...
It turns pretty good under fedora...
Atm its only use is checking my scripts under linux... and getting some more unix/linux experience... although Mac Is way better in my book.
So as of tomorrow i can add BOINC to its list of uses
Main PC spec are higher in this same post ;)... not that i want to brag, ram is kind-of low for me :wall:
(Dreamweaver, Photoshop CS 2, Firefox, Opera, IE 6 running + apache with SSL, zLib, PHP & coldfusion (this last one eats a nice 300-700mb of ram))
Any idea what sort of results the box will give once it has been intigrated in the BAUT team?

Slowly getting there... just spend money on the Hdd's 2 weeks ago.

Ok, you asked for it...:naughty:
I am running my ultra supercomputer, it has a blazing speed 466MHz Intel celeron processor with a whopping 64MB of SD-ram and the huge 10GB ultra DMA hard drive, it is fully equipped with the worlds loudest super coolant fan, (which runs at abut 50rpm and is about 2in big) and a huge 4MB ATI Rage LLC graphics card to do all your 2 dimensional pixilated needs. It comes with a max speed CDROM pushing 32x. Oh yes, it's a beast.
Break out the tissues boys.
Thank god I bought a new one, should be here in about a week or so.

Oh, this is not what I thought the thread would be. I was thinking OLD, like CP/M or something. I have a perfectly functional TRS80 Model 3 at home - with three, count 'em, three floppy drives - all five inch. And a couple boxes of blank discs. MAybe a museum would like it. it has only 48k of RAM. At the time I saw no need to spend the extra bucks for the full 64k memory, who needs all that?

Now you have me curious!
I'm thinking your 'video card' is a chip that is intergrated into your motherboard, but I might be wrong...
To find out for sure, you can*:
Right-click on an empty space on your desktop and choose "Properties", then click the "Settings" tab.
The name of your Display Adapter and Monitor should be listed there.
:)
*If you are running a version of windows that has a start button in the lower left.

Nope, mom is going to use it too run old games and the scanner that only works with 98, it may be a possibility to get a picture of me up so you can all point and laugh as well.:) But I would if that were not the case.

Computer doesn't look to bad... memory could be a bit more though.
But all in all it seems like a good by :)
I think BOINC also runs on Win 98... so if that pc still has internet connection it might still works

Well, it depends on if it takes any of the processor speed, if it does (my computer just wouldn't be able to do that and play games), it's a no go, but if it doesn't, then there is a good possibility.

and here I sit with my little 333MHZ P1 laptop...
Or the 500Mhz G4 at the office...
Though I do run BOINC/Einstein on a 2.5GHZ P4 at the office...It just sits there as an e-mail recipient and <shudder> Windows box (some sites I have to work with require that. lame lame lame, but I can't knock sense into a multi-billion dollar company)

Yes it takes CPU power... but only if your doing nothing...
If the PC sits Idle for x minutes... can be configure, mine is set to 3min of no user input, and boinc runs as lowest priority, so if something is taken lets ay 50% cpu, boinc won't interfear

I should get my IIGS' going with the *NIX OS and use them to run BOINC...
I don't think there's anything that will allow BOINC to run on any of my older Apple II machines (II+, IIe, IIc - multiple iterations) <grumble>< grumble>
