Right. So I just downloaded Firefox. Can anyone reccomend good extensions? Maybe a good text field spellchecker? Also, just how do I change the search bar so it points to Google.ca instead of Google.co.uk? See, I downloaded the British language version instead of the American...

AdBlock (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=10&application=firefox)
Tabbrowser Preferences (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=158&application=firefox)
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1419&application=firefox]IE Tab for those pages you really need to use IE with.
SearchPlugin Hacks (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1563) let's you right click on the search engines in the search plugin field to delete them.
Google Search Plugins (http://mycroft.mozdev.org/quick/google.html). Take your pick.

I like Tab X (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=785&application=firefox). It adds a close button to each tab.

I had a spellchecker, it doesn't work with 1.5.0.1, unfortunately, but I'll link you to it in the hopes that they'll update it soon. Spellbound (http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/)
I also find Fasterfox (http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/) to be useful, although don't set it too high, or you'll give the owner of the server you're on a rather large spike in bandwidth fees.

BBCode (http://jedbrown.net/1.0/mozilla/extensions/)
Paste & Go (http://tecwizards.de/mozilla/)
IE View (http://ieview.mozdev.org/) (just in case something doesn't support FF)
ResizeSearchBox (http://dragtotab.mozdev.org/resizesearchbox/)
DictionarySearch (http://dictionarysearch.mozdev.org/)
GMail Manager (http://www.longfocus.com/firefox/gmanager/) (if you use GMail, that is)
Download Statusbar (http://downloadstatusbar.mozdev.org/)
ForecastFox (http://forecastfox.mozdev.org/)
There are more, but that'll get you into the 21st century. ;)

What setting do you reccomend? I have it at Optimized.

I was going to suggest spellbound, but I forgot it doesn't work with 1.5. No wonder I am still using 1.0.7. :)
I use one called FoxyTunes to listen to media while I browse, it acutally controls WMP better than WMP does.
PDFdownload asks me if I want to download pdf links instead of forcing me to wait forever while they load.
gTranslate is a pretty neat translator that works with the right click.

Tried FoxyTunes. Slows everything down.
Have PDFdownload. Haven't used it yet.
Looking into gTranslate now... thanks.

Get "All In One Gestures". Your browsing will never be the same!

Huh. I haven't noticed any slowdown with FoxyTunes, except occasionally between tracks.
LurchGS

may be bandwidth related... at home, I see slowdowns and the like (1.5Mb DSL) but at the office... well, the only slowdown is the number of active processes on my machine (multiple T-3, 100T ethernet)
It COULD also be processor or RAM related... all manner of things

Don't see why it would be bandwidth. It's all on my computer. And I doubt it's my hardware. 3.06 G P4, 512 MB RAM. Decent enough.

ah, so you are listening to local files... I forgot that people do that. I listen to radio stations or other off-system files.
Is there a preference for CPU taken?

Er, wha?
Added: On another note, "All In One Gestures" is hilariously great...

some apps have a preference setting for how much CPU they suck up - worth a try

I thought that's what you meant. But the thing is an extension, not a program.

Yeah, it definitely is. Especially when using a tablet pc. I can use the pen to browse. I also suggest all-in-one sidebar.

it could still have settings that affect performance. Example; fasterfox does.

Oh! Sorry, I've got you now. Apparently it doesn't have any options at all, though.

bummer
I refuse to tell you what Adtran told my switch engineer the other day, though, when he was trying to solve a problem: Use the Force. (he's a big SW fan, and he got REALLY bent out of shape)

Heh. Oh, well. Not really a big deal. Thanks anyway.
I'm just still getting used to this browser. Quite nice.

It still bugs me that you have slow down issues on a beefy machine like that...
but yeah, the browser is sweet

Kind of bugs me too, but sometimes you just get a piece of software that gums up the works. No big deal.

now there, we disagree. if it causes unexpected problems, something, somewhere is not right. (I use unexpexted to indicate bugs and such - with windows, I EXPECT problems every time I boot the computer). I jot off a note to the originator of the software, with as much relevant data as I can include, and suggest they fix things.

Alright. I'll give it a shot. Just what information should I be including. I'm pretty sure, but I don;t want to overlook something.

- Web Developer (http://chrispederick.com/work/webdeveloper/) 1.0.1 - Adds a menu and a toolbar with various web developer tools.
The MR Tech Local Install extension is so much more than the description gives away, though. The extension's website has a partial list of features (http://www.mrtech.com/extensions/local_install/).
The description for NoScript is chopped off, but here's the full description (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=722&application=firefox). Very handy.
I don't have FasterFox (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1269&application=firefox) installed at the moment*, but I always drop it down to "Optimized", because I feel guilty with it on "Turbo-Charged". :)
There's also a few extensions I need to get installed: ForecastFox, PDF Download, IE Tab...

* I don't really notice a difference in speed, personally. Others notice a big difference, though.
