I want to know are there any russian music bands who are listened to in other countries, and just to know what music is listened to in general.
I heard our band "7 раса" was translated by some american radiostations, is it true?
What about me, I think that "The Offspring" and "Nirvana" are very good. Besides, sometimes I like to listen to "Nightwish".

Nightwish rock too much. Machinae Supremacy (swedish) rock too.

The Tragically Hip
Kelly Joe Phelps (Thanks Musashi!)
Disturbed
Rhea's Obsession
Anything classical

Just to name a few.

Everything except pop a la Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and alike. I admit though that even then I like some of their songs. So, basically, I listen to everything.

When I saw the title of this thread, I was humming Bach's Little
Fugue in G. I can't type and hum at the same time, though, so
I'm not hearing it at the moment.

No problem, Phelps is great.

I'm listening mostly to blues these days. John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Clapton. Occasionally some Led Zepplin. More often Dave Matthews Band. A dash of Alice in Chains and Nirvana. Sometimes I get in a mood and go on a Bjork streak too.

I listen to anything that's good. If I listed all I listen to, I'd run out of room.

Right now, I'm listening to some Hick Hop. "Cowboy Troy" is the band, "Loco Motive" is the album.

I listened to a lot of Russian folk music. I haven't listened to the more modern music, though.

Payne, list a few Russian groups for me, would you? I'm always looking for new things to listen to. And I don't mind if the songs are in a different language.

Nicolas

At this very moment, "Heartbeats", the original by The Knife. José Gonzalez' version is totally different. A bit boring maybe (depends on your mood), and too bad the voice clips in one or two occasions (in my copy at least). I prefer the original version for those reasons, and of course they've got a bonus for creating the song in the first place.

About Russian music: I don't think I own any Russian music. The closest would be a russian pressing of a Greenpeace Various Artists record, but that included groups like REM, U2...no Russian Artists. I'm still thinking, but I'm afraid I own indeed no Russian artist recordings.

Payne, list a few Russian groups for me, would you?
Sure. But I don't know what style of music are you prefer. As for me, I like an alternative music (neo-metal, hard-core, rap-core, punk-rock etc.).
If you like it too, I would recommend you some bands.
"Anticlone" - www.anticlone.ru - very impressive music, especially if you take into account that their records are home-made.
"Психея" - www.psy****.ru
"DeaDKeDы" - www.deadkeds.ru - very nice emo-metal
"Tracktor Bowling" - www.tracktorbowling.ru.ru - sometimes tough, sometimes melodic.
Besides you would visit www.neformat.com.ua , www.podzemka.net and www.funkysouls.com - there is a lot of music and it is free. I can give you the names of some other bands, but I can't advice where to find it. You may check it on specified sites. There are: "7 раса", "30 дней февраля", "##### (5diez)", "Eskimo", "Stinkie", "Оригами (Origami)", "Пророки", "Приключения Электроников".

Add:
Exuse me, official site of "Психея" is censored :) .

Hm. This Tractor Bowling has promise. I'll need to find better/more samples somewhere.

Payne: And now I'll return the favour by giving you the name of a Canadian band. The Tragically Hip (www.thehip.ca). For some reason, some of Tractor Bowling's songs made me think of them. Especially look for the songs "Locked in the Trunk of a Car" and "New Orleans is Sinking."

Currently listening to Mike Oldfield's "Sunset" from the new Light&Shade album. On an MP3. I would have bought/asked for the album had the UK version been available here. Unfortunately overhere there's only a version with some "i can do mixing me" interactive versions instead of interesting bonus songs. And I won't buy over the internet. I could ask a friendly music store overhere if they can order it, but I'm afraid he ain't allowed to sell that version here...

Sunset is a very peaceful and relaxed piece of guitar playing, excellent on the late evening hours. I'll wake up with it tomorrow morning as well. The bass guitar combined with the highs sounds excellent from my bedroom corner :). Even the synthetic drums are OK on this one, I assume the combination with the bass guitar makes them more natural. This is an adaptation of the final level music in his first MusicVR game (the one from Tr3s Lunas).

You all are going to kill me for my tastes, heh. I'll try to stick to what I listen to most often.

Opeth
Tool
Mastodon
Enya
Mudvayne
Collective Soul
Live
Disturbed
Dimmu Borgir
Gorillaz
In Flames
Katatonia
Rhapsody
Pearl Jam
Primus
Soilwork
System of a Down
Trans Siberian Orchestra
Yo-Yo-Ma
Victor Wooten

Add to that a variety of local groups that play a lot of instrumental folky tunes.

I listen mostly to country, though I listen to the local oldies or miscellaneous (soft rock, hard rock, oldies, pop, country, etc.) radio stations quite frequently.

Sugarland and Miranda Lambert have been getting a lot of play on my winamp playlist lately. Lila McCann is my all-time favorite singer (unfortunately, radio won't play her :(). Old timers like Ray Price and Vern Gosdin are also in there.

I think Bering Strait is a Russian band, but I've only known them to perform country music in English, so I guess they're not quite what you had in mind.

I've been racking my brains for this - there was a Russian band called Tatu who did some dire song in English a few years back (2003?). There were a couple of Russians who lived next door to me at the time, they had the album in Russian - it was immeasurably better!

Nicolas

Tatu: "200 Km/H In The Wrong Lane" (2002)
Original:
Tatu: "200 Po Vstriechnoj" (2003)

(hitsingle: not gonna get us/Nas Ne Dogoniat)

If this is correct, the Russian version is not the original version  :D

I only listen to music when I am driving. Depending on my mood, I range from Classical to Hard Core. I cranked it with Sonny and Cher on the way home tonight. Babe, I got you, babe! Good times. :D

I'm 39, and I love Marilyn Manson. :shhh:

I can't get the song for the new ATT/SBC commercial out of my head, though. I have declared it my favorite song to date. I have no idea who sings it. "All around the world... got to spread the word... tell 'em what you've heard..." It sounds so familiar. :shifty:

Well, I've played in a band too, but my instrument was guitar. Our band have been disintegrated about two years ago :-( .

Yeah, this is a real good band!

"Tatu" is our pop-group, and I don't really like it because I don't like pop in general. By the way, I would say that imho foreign pop-music is much better than russian... What about "Tatu", they began to make songs in english after their song "Ya soshla s uma (Я сошла с ума)", I don't know it's english equivalent, but it seems to be the song quoted by Philip A...

I play in a coversband (guitar), we've been resident in Piccadilly for 10 years.
Zappa was always my musical yardstick/mentor, SteelyDan for commercial interest and we rocked to the rest LedZep etc etc
recently....Beck....The Meters....and a South African group called
Jessie Jordan Band

My favourite long lost group is Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons.

We play for London tourists, only covers. We soon learned that these tourists want to be entertained, they want to dance, play air guitar, drink and let-go. We turn up with wigs, hooters, hats, whistles, plastic guitars, no ego's, and a stage open to takers, they wanna sing onstage? they can! ...as you can imagine we don't take it too seriously .... and were as tight as a ducks bum. We are on a wireless system as well, so we can travel the bar.....we never write a set list....

I spent years playing originals to people who really weren't interested. This is so much fun. One day I will eat my guitar, while it's on fire !!!

Last 5 records to come up in iTunes today:

Doves: Some Cities - Fairly catchy so far, but I'm not sure. I bought it on Sunday largely on the grounds that I liked the cover and it was £2.99

Art Of Noise: Metaforce (single) - Not their best, but has a pretty good Roni Size mix

Björk: Homogenic - A classic, and probably my favorite of her albums. I love the fact that she's so prepared to let Mark Bell collaborate to the point where it almost sounds like an LFO album with great vocals at times.

a-ha: Analogue (single) - Just completely wonderful. The guys from Norway are back to show Coldplay how it should be done.

The Avalanches: Since I Left You - Meh, to be honest. Some really nice bits, some real dross between them.

Yes, I have been updating the 'a's and 'b's in iTunes recently.

Having said that, I have a little 8 track studio at home where I record all my own stuff. Loads.

I never intended being a CoversGuitarist ... used to hate it. But, well it's fun, live, regular, entertaining, payed, exciting (girls..booze etc) and unpredictable ... a covers band with no rules...except to play well and entertain !

Maybe the internet link was wrong, I have not verified it.

I'm listening to Franz Ferdinand - Walk Away. I like some of these happy sounding songs that are sad in essence (I'm not talking about Janet Jackson's Together Again, that's a totally different style). This falsely happy style of Walk Away reminds me of Eels. Though in this song there's more sarcasm.

The English lyrics are little distinguished from Russian. Probably it caused by the fact that it is very hard to translate the song from one language to another...
But you are absolutly right - lyrics are bad :) . And it is one of the reasons why I don't like russian pop-music.

Try taking a song that you like (I'd recommend No Quarter by Led Zeppelin) and rewriting it so it is in the same key and retains a similar structure but is completely different except for the lyrics. My band has worked out some covers before when we were just messing around and we completely recreated the songs. You would never recognize them if you didn't know the lyrics either.

Right now: Tracy Chapman's debut album on vinyl. I'm very familiar with the music from (128 kbps) MP3's, but this is truly unbelievable. What a record! Uncomparable. Someone once asked Louis Armstrong what kind of music he enjoys hearing. His reply was something like this, but not an exact quote: When I was young I liked jazz and blues. Now that I'm a lot older I've come to realize there are only two kinds of music --- good music and bad music. It makes no difference how you may classify or categorize the type of music it is. There is only good music and bad music.

Speaking of Trevor Horn, I am listening to So What Have You Done With My Body, God? by The Art Of Noise as I type this.

As far as I know, he only did a little additional production on 3 songs for Tatu as a sort of guest producer.
