Should we add a new forum game to the atmosphere? This one is called Werewolf (or Mafia) and some of you may have played it at summer camps or something when you were younger. An outline of some advanced rules follow with some modifications from another forum where I play this game. The roles can be modified however you'd like for those that are interested in hosting. I'd just like to see who'd be interested in trying it first.

The Rules

Night:
Each night, the Werewolves, Mafia, and Vigilantes each choose one person to kill while the Devil, Spy, and Possible Seers choose one person to See. Baner, Archangel, Magistrate choose one person to protect. Everyone else sleeps. No posting allowed at night!

Day:
Every day, the entire community comes together to lynch someone for the murders commited in the night. Werewolves, Mafia, Devil, and Spy all act (and look) like innocents and participate in the mob, trying to lynch a goodie.

Possible Roles:

Good
Masons -- No special ability, other than knowing each other from the beginning.
Seer -- Pick one person per night to See and learn their role.
Fool -- Seer who usually learns the wrong role.
Vigilante -- Chooses one person per night to kill, hoping that their victim is evil.
Hunter -- Take someone with them when they die.
Villager -- Poor sod who waits around to die. Also known as Cannon Fodder.
Baner -- Pick one person per night to protect from the Werewolves
Archangel -- Pick one person per night to protect from the Mafia
Magistrate -- Pick one person per night to protect during the voting the next day
Cupid -- Pick two people the first night they fall in love and they only win if they are the only ones left alive.
Lovers -- People shot by the Cupid who know each others roles and work together achieve victory. They retain all powers from their original roles.

Evil
Werewolves -- Kill one person per night as a group. Act as normal people during the day.
Devil -- Evil Seer whose only chance of winning is to help the Werewolves.
Mafia -- Kill one person per night as a group. Act innocent during the day.
Spy -- Evil Seer whose only chance of winning is to help the Mafia.
Zanzarah -- Protects one person per night from everything, but the hunter or only defends against the vigilante if the mod prefers. A seer is unable to detect him and will get a different role. He cannot protect himself and will only win if an evil team wins.

Other Notes:
1: Day/Night time vary, but are usually have a maximum of 24 hours each.
2: no editing of msgs, if something changes or you made a mistake, make a new msg!
3: For Antartic Rule, the evil teams are allowed to convert one person during the game on a night instead of killing them.
4: Mod can also make the Magistrate evil, so they only win if either evil team wins (like the Zanzarah)
5: Cupid could pick new lovers after the first set die if the mod wishes (idea wasn't given a good review)

No offense, but these people are usually not too into this kind of game.

I'm hosting a version based around Star Trek right now, so you could be surprised as to how you can make it intersting for all kinds of people.

I have played Mafia one time on another forum, it was ok, but nothing special. Hope you can get enough players!

I have played it :) Quite fun game, though I don't imagine how it can be played via forum. I saw it being succesfully played on internet chats but in the forum... Well, why not give it a try.

Its pretty fun in the forum version, and I'm a big fan of it. I've got a link to an example of how the gameplay might go (this is a recent game from another forum at which I play this). PMs are used to send roles and for the evil teams to send their kills and whatnot. Forum games with around 30 players go through about 8 or 9 day/night cycles and things can get pretty tricky to figure out. You can play with some minor portions of the rules and make the game really interesting with a bit of inventiveness. For those of you familiar with Gary's Mod for Half Life or Half Life 2, you could make comics for each day or night and they can be really well put together. New storylines can be thought up to make things interesting (like my Star Trek version).

Daytime discussion goes on in the thread for the current game and usually nighttime discussion is banned (though some is allowed for people who've died during the day to get angry with the village for killing a good guy).

My wife does this a lot in other forums, I find the concept utterly opaque, but she gets it and enjoys it.

If you can't post at night, how can a guy like me who is only online at night participate? Or is it just like dating in high school, Guess I'm left out?

For that matter, we have members from all around the world - what is "night?"

'Day' and 'Night' tend to be 24h periods. So, the 'day' could be Tuesday, the 'night' Wendsday.

As for the rules, I've seen this game played, but I've never played it. It does seem to be quite alot of fun, though.

Edit: 'Twas a plague of commas!

GDwarf summed it up pretty well. Night and day can either be limited to 24 hour periods or they can go on for however long it takes to get all of the actions in for "nighttime" and however long it takes to reach a majority during the "daytime".

When I was a kid, we played a similar game in my basement. We called it "murder". We'd draw tickets from a hat, one of which would have a red dot. That person was the murderer. Then we'd turn off all the lights and run around and hide. The murderer put his hands on someone's neck to kill him. If you found a corpse, you would yell out, everyone would gather, and we'd all have a chance to accuse someone of being the murderer. If you accused and were right, you won, and if you were wrong, the murderer won. If no accusations were made, the game continued without the dead person.

Anyway, I'm up for this. Sounds neat. How about we make it conspiracy theory-themed, substituting greys for werewolves and MIB for Mafia or whatever? ;)

If you get a chance to moderate the game you can substitute anything. Though I think it would be more reasonable to have greys as Vulcans (since greys are rumored to be benevolent), H.R. Geiger's Alien as one group of baddies, Predator as another group and the MIB as vigilantes.

I've also played the game Murder, and it is quite similar to this. There is another variation on Murder called "Sniper" where a group of people draws tickets from a hat and one or two of which would have something to denote who would be the sniper. Then everyone would sit in a circle and wink at people whom they wished to kill. Killed persons would do something to signal that they had died, like cross their legs in front of them or rest on their elbows. If someone thinks they saw someone blink they can accuse the sniper and win the game.

"Sniper" or "Murder" would be rather difficult to play online though. ;)
