www.miniclip.com is the place to go for simple, time-wasting online games.
There are loads of games written by loads of different people. Some are crap, but there are quite a few really good ones.
In alphabetical order:
Acno's Energiser (http://www.miniclip.com/acno/acno.htm)
A game that taxes your strategic thinking. You need to push the balls into the energiser, while dodging the bugs, but because you can't lift them, you have to figure out just the right way to do it.
Alien Abduction (http://www.miniclip.com/alienabduction/alienabduction.htm)
More of an eyesight test. You go around in your saucer abducting people and cars and deposting them into the lander. The tricky part is finding the little buggers.
Alpha Attack (http://www.miniclip.com/alphattack.php)
I think this is on the secretary's exam. It tests your ability to touchtype and your try to protect your city from the alien attacks by hitting letters and numbers displayed on the aliens.
Blox Forever (http://www.miniclip.com/bloxforever.htm)
A puzzle game. You have to delete the blox by bringing like ones together, but if you don't do it in the right order, you'll end up with blox stuck and out of reach etc. Unfortunately, this one is only a small demo of the full game.
Castle Conquest (http://www.miniclip.com/castleconquest/castleconquest.php)
This one's a great idea for a practical game in the garden. It's a test of precision and ballistic motion. You have to knock over the flag's on the enemy's castle using your cannon before he does the same to you. Watch the castle pieces fall in this demonstration of rigid body mechanics.
Final Fortress (http://www.miniclip.com/finalfortress.php)
One of those tactical games. You have to protect your base from the enemy with your cannon, but economics comes into it as you choose what other weapons will be useful given your limited budget.
Gravity (http://www.miniclip.com/gravity.htm)
VOTL pilotting skills tested here. It's one for this board. Complete missions round the very small planetoid in your flying saucer. The retro look is cool as well.
Mission Mars (http://www.miniclip.com/missionmars.htm)
A sort of space invaders type thing. You have to knock down all the buildings as you fly above them. It's a test of precision.
Need for Madness (http://www.miniclip.com/needformadness/needformadness.htm)
This one's good! It's a racing game, though there is a disclaimer at the beginning that proper laws of physics will not be observed. You can win by either crossing the last checkpoint first or by smashing the other cars up. Reckless fun and there's stunts too.
Rocketman (http://www.miniclip.com/Flash/rocketman.htm)
More ballistic motion. You've got to jump from plane to plane by getting the power and direction of your jump just right.
Sandman (http://www.miniclip.com/sandman.php)
Sort of like lemmings. It's all about quick-fire strategic thinking. You need to get the sleepwalkers to the exit, but dropping piles of sand to get them up cliffs and things. The fairy tale type artistry is quite irreverent as well.
Starship Eleven (http://www.miniclip.com/starshipeleven.htm)
More pilotting skills at work here. You've got to get your ship through the maze of dangerous things.
UFO Joe (http://www.miniclip.com/ufojoe.php)
Still more pilotting as you have to abduct local creatures during your tour of many worlds. Nice retro cartoon artistry.
