The Prime Minister of Iraq has just released on the radio the news that the head of Al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al Zarqawi, has been killed by US special forces. I am no fan of the war in Iraq but I can greet this news with relief. The man, by all accounts, was a psychopath of the highest order.

Definitely good news for the Coalition, and more importantly ordinary Iraqis.

News like this can only speed the return home of liberating/occupying forces there, certainly the Iraqis will feel with events like this that there is less reason for the large foreign presence there.

In and of itself, no.

Hopefully the news will bring some peace of mind to people in that region.

I'm hoping for a little piece of mind at the gas pump.

Already under $70 a barrel. :)

One would certainly hope so, but they seem to have a good supply of psychopaths ready to interview for the job and carry on the work.

Is that why I am continually viewing an image of his dead face? To reassure those in that region? I'm getting a bit tired of looking at it. It's almost being displayed as a trophy...how sick...

Will this change "things'? I believe it could go either way...

Depends on a few things. The big one is just how autonomous his people were. A lot of these organizations are run by leaders who hate the idea of letting go of power. Charismatic subordinates were not encouraged to build support bases.

As an example, look at the disarray Fatah is in post-Arafat.

Let's hope that he's not merely dead,
But really most sincerely dead! :)

What's happened to Daddy?

He's gone to heaven.

Aw, that's nice! He sent all his friends there.

I think this (http://www.zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/jyllands-posten_cartoons/jyllandsposten_virgins2.jpg) is the only good response.

Oh, please, let it bring peace. Graham's not there yet, and I'd just as soon he never was.

Anyone else remember SLN's Weekend Update following the death of Spain's Fransisco Franco? It was a running gag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generalissimo_Francisco_Franco_is_still_dead) for several weeks.

Chevy Chase: "This breaking news just in. Generalissimo Fransisco Franco is still dead."

A friend of mine started using a similar line after about 3 days of coverage about Pope John Paul II's death.

I remember when Ayatollah Khomenei was dying; SNL did a running skit with a newsman standing outside his hospital door. He would intone the sad news of the Ayatollah's impending death, then suddenly break into a maniacal grin and cry "Keep watching for futher updates!"

Is it 70 virgins waiting for the martyred or is it a 70 year old virgin?

Or maybe better yet a 20 year old virgin who never gives it up for a martyr? For EVER?

Is it just my imagination or am I not allowed to address the factual shortcomings of our imbecile-in-chief in this forum, but openly mocking elements of a religion is just fine?

I haven't even seen a cautionary note from a moderator.

Besides, bearing in mind the number one carp from the higher-ups here is that "This is a family friendly forum!"....

Let's hope that he's not merely dead,

Just trying to get a sense of some consistency here.

Some times we mods don't get to all the threads. That is why we have the report button in the upper right-hand corner.

As for the content of this thread....time to close!
